  • Great value in a budget board.
Style: X470 GAMING PLUS Pattern Name: Motherboard
I chose the MSI Gaming Plus to upgrade my PC with an AMD Ryzen 5 2600X after 5 years with an AMD FX 8350 Black Edition (which, unfortunately, had been badly hobbled by a lemon of a Gigabyte board). I didn't want to spend an arm and a leg, as I was trying to upgrade on a budget, but I needed solid performance--especially for VR. The Gaming Plus, so far, has worked out perfectly. Everything is working flawlessly, and installation was a breeze after I figured out I didn't need the extra 4-pin power connector for the CPU Power, just the 8-pin (my power supply only had the 8, not the 8+4). The BIOS is terrific--easy to configure, and the XMP profile was convenient for setting up my 16GB (2x8) of G.Skill RipJaws DDR4 3000 RAM. The USB so far appears solid--a problem I faced with the Gigabyte board, which had a flaky USB bus (among other problems). Also, my Samsung Evo 960 (250GB) is blazing fast, as is everything else. No overheating at stock or boosted core speeds, and the heatsinks are all very firmly seated on this board (my Gigabyte had badly-seated heatsinks which meant the board heated up too much with even minor overclocking attempts). The "Armored" PCIE port is a great idea, and works well with my ASUS GeForce 1080Ti ROG Strix in there--a heavy board that doesn't bend the armored port at all. The MSI also easily accommodated my Corsair H60 liquid cooler, which I repurposed for the 2600X as I did not want to go with the stock (fan) Wraith cooler. The Corsair attached easily, and even at peak effort with all cores firing at over 4GHz, the highest temperature I've seen is 72C; I'm getting between 36C-44C at idle, and around 56C under moderate loads. Absolutely no overheating issues with this board (unlike the Gigabyte). If I had one criticism, it would be the lack of color-coding for the audio jacks in back, but I eventually figured out what goes where (the diagram in the manual didn't really help), so I'm not taking points off for that. Everything else with this board has been terrific so far. Anyway, very pleased. ... show more

  • Does NOT have a graphics adapter, and don't count on those "Mystic" lights working for long!
Style: X470 GAMING PLUS Pattern Name: Motherboard
So before I get to the heart of this review, let me state very clearly that my motherboard is functioning just fine. It booted right up, was very easy to configure, and is running like a scalded cat. So why the 1 star review, you might ask. There are 2 things wrong, and each of them is big enough to justify losing stars. 1. The Mystic Light feature worked for 1 day. Then I rebooted and *poof* stopped working. I started looking around online and saw that this is an INCREDIBLY common failure. I saw literally thousands of posts with the exact same symptoms as mine. But for me, this case is shoved under a desk and I could care less about the pimp lights. However a feature failure, even a completely aesthetic one, is still a feature failure and MSI deserves to lose a couple stars over it. 2. This board does NOT have an onboard graphics ADAPTER. What it does have is a graphics PORT. Allow me to explain this VERY important difference. This board relies on the GPU in CPUs that have one integrated such as any Ryzen chip with a 'G' suffix. The board itself does NOT have its own hardware necessary for rendering a video signal. So if you do NOT make a point to buy a Ryzen with integrated graphics, as I didn't, then the video outputs will NOT work. This really disappointed me, but it also wasn't a deal breaker since I'll always have a video card in it. But having integrated video is a nice fallback if you ever manage to fry a video card and it was actually one of the reasons I chose this board over some others. And quite frankly the way this board is marketed with "Onboard Graphics" stinks of false advertising. Bad form MSI ... -2 more stars 3. edited: OOOOOH MY lookie here! MSI wants to respond to my post with completely misleading garbage! Yay for me! No, MSI goon, this statement, " Onboard integrated graphics will be driven by the CPU used regardless of the brand or manufacturer of the motherboard." Is 100% incorrect. I have worked on hundreds of motherboards that actually used integrated video adapters that did NOT require a specific type of CPU that has an integrated GPU on the same die. In fact, this is the first and ONLY MB I've ever seen that where the video output is rendered non-functional due to the specific choice of CPU. You are either uneducated or intentionally trying to mislead consumers. I would give this board ZERO stars if I could. NEVER AGAIN MSI. ... show more

  • MB for Linux
Style: X470 GAMING PLUS Pattern Name: Motherboard
So glad nobody answered my UEFI question, after 3 days, in the ASRock forum. A simple legacy mode question. Which is important to me, a linux only user. Didn't see any mention of it in the ASRock manual PDF either. The MSI manual, on the other hand, clearly talked about legacy mode. My old MB was a ASRock, so I guess that was a factor in considering them again, even though I suspected that board with a few quirky linux problems. Very happy with the MSI board so far. Was happy that the X470 board was 2nd gen Ryzen ready...2600x in my case. I'm not really interested in overclocking, because I want my system to run as long as possible. Once everything was installed to this MB, linux booted right up from the old hard drives, which I didn't expect. Linux is awsome and runs great, at least my versions (Mint 18.1 and Manjaro) on this MSI MB. One side note, virtualization in linux, also important to me, had to be enabled in the BIOS. If I have one complaint it would be that nothing (box, antistatic bag) was sealed. ... show more
