I’ve considered myself to know my way around computers, but this is the first time I’ve ever built one. Picking the MSI Z390 Gaming Plus was the product of 2 decisions I’d made prior: I wanted to use the new Intel i9 processor and go for a red theme. Using PCPartPicker I was able to sort out and see which motherboards were compatible which my processor selection, but a caution message appeared on the first recommended board could need a BIOS update to work properly with the new gen of Intel processors. Since it’s my first build and being more familiar with Macs than PC’s, this scared me off. After looking at other highly rated motherboards, I stumbled upon this one — and the results have been fabulous — and as a bonus is red! Literally everything has been plug-and-play. Ports for RAM, GPU, fans, and power were easy to locate and connect. There are ample internal SATA ports and an additional USB 3 connection I’ll have to think of a use for. So far it’s performed extremely well — the BIOS is intuitive and the board is handling all the gaming I’ve thrown at it. My only complaint is the lack of on-board USB Type A ports. There are only 5. I’d love closer to 8. The inclusion of a USB-C port is a nice touch, but I was hoping to be able to start to move away from the clutter of USB hubs on my desk or adding a PCI card with more ports. Overall, it’s been a great value. Was easy to install, and just makes me happy to look at.

I finished putting together a system for the first time in nearly five years, and this board was the centerpiece. Paired with an i5-9600k and 2x8GB Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 RAM, it's been a great experience. PROS: +Very detailed BIOS +Easy OC options if you want a little more speed, but don't want to mess around with voltage and memory timings individually. I enabled game boost and XMP, and it correctly clocked my RAM at 3000 mhz, and zipped my i5 up to 4.4ghz-4.6ghz. Sure, you could probably squeeze a bit more performance by adjusting everything manually and using meticulous trial & error, but I'll take 97% of the performance with 0% of the headaches any day of the week. + fairly robust (printed!) manual, covering most of the board's layout and BIOS features + COOL "board explorer" feature in the BIOS - you can mouse over individual ports and see what the system thinks is physically connected to each port. + attractive board - that black and red is a good look. Plus, the case badge is surprisingly classy. CONS: - no standoffs included! I know typically these come with a case, and not a motherboard, but I wish mobo manufacturers would at least include six-eight simple standoffs to facilitate a smoother install process. They throw in SATA cables, so why not a handful of brass standoffs? This doesn't impact the quality of the board, so I didn't take off a star for this observation. OTHER THOUGHTS: = I typically use only two brands for my motherboard needs - MSI and Gigabyte. Neither has failed me (knock on wood), but this is my second MSI board in a row with a superior BIOS implementation. If this board lasts me for five years (as my last MSI board did), then I'll likely be team MSI for (motherboard) life.

I got this for my first PC build, since my previous PC (a prebuilt CyberPower one) had an MSI motherboard that I had no issues with and was very functional. It was very easy to install, looks great, and the BIOS is very user friendly. I had no problem tinkering with my fan settings and speeding up my RAM. It also automatically overclocks my CPU to a safe speed when in high use to get more performance but not risk stability issues. However, I am disappointed by the LED's. My PC was built with a black/red theme, which was inspired by this motherboard in the first place, so I was hoping that the LED's would provide some nice ambient light that matched the rest of the computer. But they're simply too small/low power to do much of anything. Thankfully, my case (Phanteks P400S) came with a LED strip that compensates. First picture is with flash to show the motherboard, with the case's LED strip turned on. Second picture is no flash, case's LED strip turned off, to show the motherboard's LEDs.

Excellent motherboard! Pros: - TWO m.2 slots for NVMe/SSD that won't break the bank! - BIOS was easy enough - recognized all devices with no issue (including the m.2 NVMe). - SATA port placement & design w/ cutaway functions great – looks good too. - Red LED back lights matched perfectly with my black + red color scheme. - Build quality is nice - doesn't flex too much or feel like it's going to snap. Cons (very minor): - no SLI support, only Crossfire (for AMD cards); not all that important today (for many reasons). - LED back lights are one color (red) - not an issue for me, but may be for others. Someone said LEDs can be turned OFF with MSI Red Dragon light app - I haven't tested this, but that may be a solution if 'red' doesn't match your color scheme. This is a quality mid-range board - not a 'budget' board as some call it - that performs very well. Overall, very pleased! Specs: 9900K, 2070 Super, 970 EVO NVMe (boot drive), 1 TB 2.5 inch SSD (storage), on this motherboard = runs like a champ!

I picked this up for a new budget build using an i7-9700k to replace my really old I7-3700. My initial impression after completing the build as that this is a great combo if you are ok with the features included. Here is what I learned from the build : Specs: 1) 6 Sata Ports 2) 2 m.2 nvme slots.If you use both slots, you will lose 2 of the above sata ports 3) One Cnvi slot for intel wifi/bluetooth laptop card. I was going to put one in that I had lying around, but it turns out that using this slot makes the second USB2 header unavailable. 4) 2 USB 3.1 gen 1 sockets on front edge of motherboard. 5) 2 USB 2.0 headers on bottom edge of motherboard. 6) Fan headers : CPU, Pump, 5 x Sysfan headers. If you like fan's this is pretty nice. 7) Additional USB Ports on I/O Panel : 1 USB-C 3.1 gen 2, One USB-A 3.1 gen 2, 2xUSB-A 3.1 gen 1, 2 USB-A 2.0 8) 1 Intel I219-V gigabit ethernet port. Bios: The bios has a graphical interface that is annoying to me. It took me a little time to get used to it, but you will eventually figure it out. There are a ton of settings in here if you want to tweak stuff. At a minimum, make sure you turn on the XMP switch if your ram supports it. Again, I found the interface annoying, but it does let you adjust each fan in the system based on CPU or System temperature, so you can keep things quiet until things heat up. Again, tons of settings for CPU Voltages and memory timings etc. I used the following components for my build : Core I7-7-9700k, Noctua NH-U12S Cooler (includes paste), WD 1TB Blue nVme drive, 2x16gb Corsair Vengeance 3600 ram. I used my existing 550w power supply, USB 3.1 add on pcie card. After installing everything, make sure to update the bios, and download the latest Intel Chipset, Intel Network, and Realtek drivers to replace what Windows installs by default. With this combo I was able to get all 8 cores to 4.9ghz with temps just under 90c (idles around 40) with just some basic tweaks. I ran OCCT for an hour and it seems stable. Voltage tops outs at about 1.4v core. Again, If you are ok with the features of this board, and get it at a good price you should consider it. There are good deals on 9th gen Intel parts right now, but if you want the latest and greatest and have the extra cash, go get an I7-10700 and compatible board instead.

Just finished installing this product the other day and I must say, I am very impressed with MSI's build quality and attention to detail. The board is very clearly marked so new builders won't have any issues identifying connections, but is also intelligently designed for experienced builders who need a board that doesn't cut corners. I had no problems installing this into my Phanteks P350x case. The most frustrating thing about this board was installing the beefy 212 Evo Cooler, but thanks to the sturdy design of the mobo it went fairly smoothly. I think my favorite part about it is those sideways sata connectors, I mean come on that is just freakin genius. I will definitely order from MSI again for my next build or perhaps upgrades for this one in the future. I highly recommend any curious builders starting off with this one, It has everything you need. 9th Gen CPU support, 2 USB 3.0 connectors, 6 partitioned SATA ports, 2 NVME slots, hard drive bays, and all on a very clean looking motherboard. What more could you want?

I wanted WiFi but the next MSI up the food chain was more than the cost of installing Wifi by an amount. On paper I saw little difference but on paper is different than actually is. Anyway, I wanted MSI for their BIOS which is extremely friendly to new overclockers & this board has a ton of features & innovations from VMIs under the heat sink to 2 turbo M2 slots. 1 at 16 PCIe & the second at 4 PCIe lanes but good for Optane or sata SSD speeds. Has dedicated CNVI M.2 WiFi slot & just look at the description for everything. Not everyone likes the red & black but I do & the board is great as a low level enthusiast board. It's the real deal for overclocking CPU (I5 9600K) in my case & ram (3200mgz 2 x 8). It supports more than those like I9 9900K & 4400 mgz DDR4. Perfect board for my needs which is mainly X-Plane 11 & 12 soon.

I have been a Msi fan since I built my first rig using a Z97 gaming board(still probably would be if a pole transformer had not have blow and fired my system.). I have built five total using this company and have never came across a bad item from them. The red glow looks nice in my case. My favorite things about the board are the ddr4 boost and core boost(which are the strengths of this board). The sata ports have a cut away in front of them that put them at the edge of the board, which helps with cable management. Though I have not had the board that long, it has preformed better than I had expected. Have not found any cons to the board yet and will update if I ever do. I would have liked the steel armor to have been on the both pci-e ports though. Overall, it is a great board and has a great performance. I have already recommended this board to a few people.
