  • Great no frills board at an affordable price!
Style: MAG X870 TOMAHAWK WIFI
The MSI MAG X870 Tomahawk WiFi is a high-performance AM5 motherboard built on the X870 chipset, offering strong VRMs (14+2+1), Wi‑Fi 7, 2.5Gb LAN, and an impressive array of USB ports including USB4. It supports Ryzen 7000 and 9000 CPUs with excellent thermal performance and build quality, making it ideal for gamers and power users. While it lacks multiple full-speed PCIe Gen 5 lanes and can be picky with memory in some setups, it's one of the best-value X870 boards available around $300. ... show more

  • Quality, pioneering design at an ultra-premium price
Style: MEG X870E GODLIKE
This is a quality motherboard that comes at an ultra-premium cost. The PCIe 5.0 lanes are sensibly laid out, allowing for many M.2 NVME drives without eating into the GPU's PCIe lanes. I've had no issues getting the my Crucial T705 to negotiate as gen 5 in the M.2_1 slot. I'm upgrading from an ASUS ROG x670e Crosshair EXTREME, and the GODLIKE's expander board is much better than ASUS's offering on their premium motherboard. The GODLIKE's expander allows you to change NVME drives from outside the case (sorry, no hot-swapping). I was able to install it into PCI_E3 so that it does not take away any lanes from my GPU (though in this configuration it can only support having one of its M.2 slots active). My only complaint is that the fan on the expander just ramps to full speed right away and is unnecessarily loud. I really enjoyed the EZ Link design. It really made everything more clear and centralized over the x670e Crosshairs Extreme. The EZ Control Hub was also one of the more easy to deal with hubs. It makes sense to hide away most of the fan and RGB connections in the back of the case. I was building in a Cooler Master HAF Evo 700 and the fan and RGB hubs the case came with really made how comparatively easy the EZ Control Hub was to use apparent. The great thing about that hub is that it lets you set the fan curves in BIOS without needing to use third-party software in Windows. All the DIY niceties like the magnetic covers on unneeded ports, M.2 heatsinks, the EZ-Clip for putting in NVME drives, are all great. It is all very thoughtful and almost makes you feel like you're having a luxury PC-building experience. I've been getting some great PBO/CO results so I'm sure the VRM-supplied power and stability of the motherboard is good, but I did not A/B test it against any other board or anything. The two included temperature probes are useful. I nestled one into the cables coming from my 12VHPWR connector in order to detect any overheating situation before the connector starts melting. The other one I'm using for case ambient.I believe you can actually use them to control the fans in the motherboard settings, so that can be really useful for tuning an ideal quiet but functional cooling setup. The LCD display (Dynamic Dashboard III) is good. There's a decent amount of customization you can do once you use their software. The only significant flaw for myself is that I could not get Device Encryption to work on Windows 11. I could not get it to work on the x670e Crosshair EXTREME either. I get the same error: BitLocker cannot use Secure Boot for integrity because the expected TCG Log separator entry is missing or invalid. I suspect it's the same BIOS problem as the x670e Crosshair EXTREME and that the TCG log in PCR7 was not correctly written by their UEFI implementation. ... show more

  • Expensive but feature-heavy and gorgeous AM5 motherboard
Style: MPG X870E CARBON WIFI
This motherboard is overpriced, considering there are sub-$300 motherboards that do essentially the same thing (especially if you don't need the overkill amount of ports on the I/O panel). But for an aesthetic, top-of-the-line black build, this motherboard is unmatched. The RGB for the dragon and "carbon" branding is lovely, and the board itself is solid and high quality. It's chock-full of ports, headers, and features- plus the BIOS is incredibly intuitive and easy to use/navigate. Unfortunately, the second M.2 slot shares a lane with the first PCIe slot, so you won't be able to use all four SSD slots unless you want to halve your GPU slot from PCIe 5.0 x16 to PCIe 5.0 x8 (even if that's pretty insignificant). Overall, though, it's a great board, but overkill for most and incredibly expensive for a motherboard. ... show more

  • You will be beta testing a motherboard
Style: MAG X870 TOMAHAWK WIFI
UPDATE: I ended up sending a ticket to MSI to see if they could fix the WiFi issue, after some back and forth, their solution was to buy a WiFi extended. The "fix" comes after them knowing my computer is less than 20 feet from the router. I returned it after that message and bought a Gigabyte x870 Elite WiFi 7. Haven't had a single issue with it since. Used to use MSI but after that motherboard I'll be returning to other brands that don't sell garbage. Where to start, I have built multiple computers and for the most part, don't have many issues. However, with this motherboard it has been nothing BUT issues. I was drawn towards this one because of its high reviews and MSI generally has a good name. However, I cannot recommend this motherboard any less. To begin off, this motherboard takes on average 1 minute to boot past the MSI logo. This is with OC RAM, some people have had better luck with out of the box RAM. This product should truthfully be labeled as "beta testing" and should not have a price tag of 300 dollars. Currently experienced bugs/issues: -EZ Debug constantly showing code 08 - "System Agent initialization after microcode loading" from MSI forums, this is a known issue that can only be solved by downloading a beta version BIOS update. Which one user stated that they lost all USB 2.0 connections after installing this -Motherboard does not detect some RGB components after waking up from a sleep mode. For instance the fans will still function normally but the LED's will not come back on. OpenRGB will not detect the components after the computer has been woken up from sleep. To fix this issue, you must restart the computer and make sure it doesn't go to sleep. -WiFi, it claims "WiFi 7 has ultimate low latency" I just upgraded this motherboard and now I am getting consistent packet drops, nearly every 2 - 3 minutes the ping will spike to 2000+ then immediately drop down to 20-40. Not sure if this is a hardware issue or a driver issue, doesn't matter either way. Having a disconnection like this is very disruptive for gaming. I have not been able to try ethernet cable, so I can't say if that does or does not work. -When this board comes in, it does not come with the wifi drivers, therefore you must already have a device that can download the driver then transfer it to a usb driver to install -Over 1 minute boot up times from the press of the power button -MSI bloatware known as MSI center, also it will try and install Norton Antivirus - another baffling decision from MSI -The wifi connection is not the industry standard RP-SMA, female to male connection. It is a plug-in type with the option to install adapters. If you want to use a wifi antenna that isn't the one that comes in a box, you will need to buy adapters. Most aftermarket on amazon use the RP-SMA female to male. In the box with the motherboard there is an incentive to review this motherboard, that is probably why there are so many 5 star reviews. This is in no way a good gaming motherboard, maybe I just got a bad board, but with all the issues above, I will be promptly returning this and buying something that doesn't make me feel like I work at a QA department. I did not buy a motherboard so I could tinker with the BIOS settings and installing/repairing drivers. ... show more
