I'll write more info later, but it's a good laptop. I think a lot of people don't realize that this computer needs updates and has built in software that can dictate how your computer manages itself, is battery, and it's fans, and if you don't know how to figure it out and some settings won't work without reloading certain things, it can cause things to work poorly, including the fans, hence over heating. The fans when maxed really really kick in, so if your computer is over heating and you don't have it set to ramp up the fans to deal with the heat, you're going to have an issue and when the fans are maxed, trust me, you'll know. Most of the time I only need the fans at 50% and anything higher than that isn't necessary. Oh and I've had this computer for over a year now. ... show more

If touchpad problems can be resolved i will add another star

This is for the MSI Creator 17M A9SD-046 with the GTX1660i Video Chipset. I want to love this laptop but as of right now i hate the touchpad. Actually what i hate is the lack of advanced options that Windows 10 offers for the touchpad. I am disgusted that upon further investigation part of the problem is manufacturers handing over the control of the hardware to Windows/Intel and washing their hands of it. The result is my 8 year old HP Envy with a Synaptics touchpad is far better than the brand new "Creators" laptop made by MSI. For example, i am a right clicker, i love to right click. The touchpad on the MSI laptop sets aside the right corner of a decent size touchpad for right clicking. A small, tiny, corner of the touchpad. Can i change the zone within which a right click is registered. Nope, because Windows 10 has nothing of the sort and there is no advanced hardware utility for the touchpad (that i can find, if anyone can point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated). Can i do it on my very old HP, yep sure can. In fact trying to decipher what the touchpad hardware is a trial in itself. It seems that various hardware companies are just handing it over to Intel and Microsoft to make a crappy hardware sandwich with dumbed-down controls. Did i say this is a Creators Laptop. Give me a break. I can't so far identify what the touchpad is since it shows it's an Intel I2C touchpad which is just the Intel interface for various hardware to the rest of the system. Digging deep into Device Manger reveals nothing just more crappy Intel I2C software and drivers. The MSI specifications for the laptop show a big, fat nothing for the touchpad hardware and can't find any more documentation on the hardware. I tried installing Synaptics through Microsoft store, nope it won't even install, crashes during instalation, Elantech Store app, nope shows no hardware installed. So unless someone can point me to an Intel Touchpad Utility which would be the first time i have ever seen such a thing then Windows crappy precision point options are it. What a disgrace. I will have to take time learning to use two finger clicks (which half the time register as a single left click) to get my right click functionality back. It's just ruined my whole experience with the laptop. For the rest of it i like it, it came as advertised. Screen, weight, build quality, fan noise all good. I am not loving the keyboard and touchpad being pushed to the front of the laptop which leaves no room for your wrists but not a deal breaker. I would have more to offer on this but i haven't used it very much thanks to the aforementioned touchpad debacle. ... show more

My favorite laptop

This laptop is geared for the creative crowd but it can handle any AAA gaming title you through at it. I love the thinness and portability of the laptop. Pros: 1) Good for gaming 2) Color accurate screen 3) Not the usual black and red you see in high performance laptops 4) Good port selection. Cons: 1) I my case might be different for others. I had to ticker with system files to have my programs run on my dedicated graphics card and not the windows graphics. It makes your programs/games look better and run smoother. To the uninitiated it could be frustrating hurdle to get through. 2) It does run hot sometimes. So if you are trying to dodge kids just leave this on your lap and fire up your favorite graphic intensive program. 3) This kinda ties in with the heat, but the fans can get pretty loud. If you are playing something at maximum volume or wearing headphones you should be fine. 4) Batter life is sub par at best. Most people bring the charger so it shouldn't inconvenience you that much ... show more

1 hr battery life not plugged in, slows down, big battery, basically has to be plugged in & is loud

I was really unimpressed with this to be honest. I had my hopes up that it would be a quality device considering the price, however it's not worth what you pay for it. I will be returning it and buying a MacBook Pro 13" instead which I know will last much longer not plugged in. I read in the description before buying that the battery life not plugged in would last 4-5 hours. However that is NOT the case. When it's fully charged and unplugged the battery only lasts at most about 1 hour & 1/2 unplugged. Anytime it's running it has a loud fan blowing and sounds like it's on it's last breath. The battery pack attached to the cord is the biggest I've ever seen for any computer. I wouldn't want to lug that around. The laptop itself is quite heavy. I don't like the design on it of a dragon. The exterior of it looks like a stainless steel fridge. I've decided after this that I don't really like Microsoft. I tried buying an inverter power supply to plug this into and the reasonably priced one only gave it an extra hour run time, which didn't help because I at least wanted 4 hours. I think this thing fails as a laptop. Because laptops are supposed to be easy to transport and last long without power sources, this fails in both areas. A better name for this would be the "easier to move to a different room desktop," because this thing is easier to move than an actual desk top but still has to be plugged in and basically stay in the same place. I honestly don't know why anyone would want this. On about the 4th use it started to slow down and that's when I said enough is enough I'm throwing in the towel on this one, I've got to return it. This is probably the last time I buy technology that is not name brand. Because others are popular for a reason, their products work better. My mistake was not doing better research on this before purchasing, I took the word of someone getting paid to promote this and turns out they were just lying through their teeth to get their cut. Anyways it's not worth it please don't buy it, unless you like making returns, because it's not a fun process and this product is very disappointing. ... show more

Great laptop but can overheat itself and crash

Laptop is great but FYI, this thing does not throttle itself down if its running hot. It will keep going until it really can't go anymore. Ran a memory check with Memtest on it and was hitting TJMax very easily so the system crashed and shut itself down. It is almost impossible to do this with normal use (even gaming) so you do not need to worry about it but just be aware of it! Laptop BIOS has an advanced setting by hitting ALT + R-CTRL + SHIFT + F2 (hit those keys together once in the BIOS). You can then enable XMP for laptop memory so you can support speeds faster than 2666MHz. I have 32GB memory at 3200Mhz with CL16 running on the laptop stable. Some other notes on the laptop abilities - 1 single SATA drive slot and has a bracket to hold it in place (it is in the box) it is empty - 1 single NVME slot - 2 DDR4 slots - WiFi card can be upgraded If anything like the fans and cooling system break it can be replaced very easily (unlike most laptops). My review focuses on terrible design decisions by MSI and their customer support. The laptop is otherwise fine for its main use cases, unless you do extensive typing. What is not apparent on the Amazon page is that the keyboard configuration for this laptop is horrific and MSI provides no software to change the key mappings. The Function key ("Fn"), exists on the right-hand side of the keyboard, near the pointless backslash key and the annoying "Alt Gr" key. However, the worst offender is that the Home/End buttons require usage of the Function key. Given that the right hand would press all these buttons, this is an awkward proposition. Since I write an extensive amount of code, documentation, and written communications, I make abundant use the Home/End buttons in my day-to-day work. Anyone who makes use of these keys should be wary of purchasing this laptop. "SteelSeries" and similar software MSI provides for its gaming laptops to remap keys do not work on the Creator Series. Instead, you must rely on a third-party program like SharpKeys to remap "PgUp" to "Home" and "PgDown" to "End". Since SharpKeys cannot capture Function keys (since those execute outside of Windows), this means you would lose access to PgUp/PgDown once you map them to Home/End, unless you find some other keys to sacrifice. I contacted MSI support regarding this issue. After they had me go through everything that I said I did in my initial request, their response was "get a replacement [laptop] or refund". They were not keen on providing an update for this series to be compatible with their existing key mapping software. The foolish keyboard design and poor customer support have already soured my experiences with an otherwise functional laptop. It is a shame that the Amazon page does not provide a full image of the keyboard and that MSI has decided to not support the software it provides for its other laptops. ... show more

No true color app. It doesn't support the device

Well most of the product discription was right. But the so called true color doesnt work. Every time i installed the app it keep telling the device doesnt support it or just says it wont work false advertisement for one thing. I already had to reset the laptop once. Because they didnt mention the fact that you can turn off the windows button. And switch it with the function button. Why the heck did yall need to add that option. It took my like 5 hours to find out that was what happened and it was after my reset. All the forums was of no help. ... show more
