I never write reviews but for this I will make an exception. It is not at all what I expected. It is very heavy. The one on the right is 1.5oz, the Mr. Pen is 7.5oz. It's massive in comparison. You could stab the neighbor's mastiff with it. If you are looking for a compass made of German steel with precision you will be disappointed. This is not the one, however it is not without its charm. After the better part of an hour of sanding, filing and a few trips to the oscillating spindle sander it is smoother and the rough edges are knocked off. The head joint pin is rock solid....matter of fact it's a bit too tight. Little bit of oil and some back in forth and it's better. The wing nut threads are a bit sandy feeling but passable. It will probably smooth out over time. It appears to be made by hand in a machine shop. No stamped parts except maybe the wing, but it's well made if a bit crude. If I were to place this beside my 9 1/2 Stanley block plane(which I like better than my Veritas) you would have a hard time discerning that they were not built in the same era. There is no Made In China stamp on it. It takes a number two pencil and holds it fast and draws circles very well. The design is simple, solid and effective. It's what a good tool should be. And it's not too spendy. The only knock I have is the rough edges. I'd like to see a 2.0 version with a little more finesse.

For almost the same price as a stamped steel compass this one's legs are solid machined steel with a brushed finish. The whole compass is substantial and will survive the bottom of the tool box. I use for scribing panels and counter tops

OK....THIS thing is as solid as you can get! This will last and last and outlast anything out there, heck, you you more likely pass this one on to your kids if not your grandkids. One of the more solid, heavy "real" steel tools I've purchased in a long time....and yes, I was NOT expecting this quality. It is definately made to last. Extremely happy with this purchase.....wow

First thing I noticed was how heavy and solid the metal construction is, like a machinist's tool should be. Action is a bit stiff but that's ok. One thing I would take issue with is the sharp edges on basically every corner of the metal. This is a hand tool and should be easy on the hands. It needs a good de-burring all around. I put it on a shop buffing wheel for five minutes to smooth all the edges. You could probably use a metal file. Next small complaint is the small diameter of the pencil holder. You can fit a normal #2 wood pencil in there, and that is about it. I don't have any mechanical pencils or pens that will fit. I prefer a roller pen and ended up shaving the plastic down so it would fit. Photo shows after edge buffing. Next is that it seems to be uncoated steel. I will probably put a bit of spray lacquer on it to stop it rusting.
