  • WOW - Excellent Value
Model: DCLA-0805
For my day-job, I inspect mechanical equipment with high-end Mitutoyo and Starrette calipers. I wanted to get something lower-cost, but good enough to use at home (where accuracy to 1/32" is more than I really need). I read several reviews on different calipers. If you're just starting this process looking for a good set of calipers for home/hobby/general machinist use - I'll be blunt and save you time. Stop reading and just buy these. You can pay several hundred more dollars to get the high-end models for near-perfection, but you will barely notice the difference if you don't need accuracy down to the mil. I'm a tool snob and I would have no shame putting this in my work bag for day use even without the name. I bought the 8 inch model (cause...its more than 6). These calipers are *excellent* value with really good build quality. I cleaned my new unit with a light oil (WD-40) and worked the slide a few times to break-in. After a few minutes, the vernier mechanism is surprisingly smooth and feels comparable to my Mit/Starrettes. The resolution is half mil or 1/128 of an inch, which is much more than I'll ever really need at home. The mechanism feels smooth returns to the zero point each time and appears to give consistent readings. The faces look parallel and clean, but I haven't checked their accuracy (don't think I need that kind of assurance for home/hobby use). The only thing two minor things I notice different about the VINCA 8" vs my work Mit/Stars. The first is that the metal faces of the metal calipers aren't polished on the measurement faces. The second minor difference is there is an ever-so-slight 'twist' or lateral offset that the sliding face can make relative to the stationary face normal to the direction of travel (out-of-plane direction). Its not in the direction that really affects accuracy for what I need, and if you don't push the faces in that direction, you will never notice it. For the cost savings - I'll take it! Display is large and in general easy to read. Note the number display uses two different size 'fonts': (1) Up to 3 large (full-size) digits on the left, and (2) Up to 3 small (half-size) digits on the right side (needed to fit the fraction display). The fractions and mm decimal outputs are easy to read. The 'fractional' measurements on these two settings are all the small size digits I have to be careful with inch decimal readings - the large font size for the inch decimal readings are whole number and tenths of an inch. The 3 smaller numbers with the inch-decimal output are actually hundreds of an inch down to half-mil precision. It would be a nice feature if the caliper display could adjust the precision so that the 3 smaller digits are all mils or fractions could round to a nearest 1/64th or 1/32nd (I will never need 1/128 precision). Minor preference note in an otherwise solid tool. ... show more

  • Very Good for the $$$ - VINCA 8-inch
Model: DCLA-0805
If your expectation is that this is on par with a Starrett or Mitutoyo, check that at the door. But, for the price segment it fulfills, it is solid. I perform the caliper, mic, etc. verifications as part of my job so I tested this against certified Mitutoyo gauge blocks. The outside, inside, depth rod, & step face all measured within +/- 0.0015" throughout the range. It also has smooth operation & the measurement faces line up perfectly. Keep the measurement faces clean, treat the tool with respect, and you should be fine. Is it as smooth and robust as a Starrett or Mitutoyo? No. If that is your expectation, spend the extra $100+ so you won't have buyers remorse. ... show more

  • Great micrometer!
Model: DCLA-0805
To be honest, for the price of these I was expecting maybe a step just above the cheap ones I got from the local imported tools shop. I was instead quite surprised when they arrived, they are so many classes above that it's unfair to the cheap ones to compare them to this standard. Very nicely made, tight tolerances, very accurate, nice feel that seemed way above the price range. I've been using them a lot the past couple of weeks measuring things to design and 3D print, to check tolerances of the printed parts and such, and I'm still very happy with the quality and finish. The really cheap pair I had would bounce all over, never settling on a number in the .00mm at all, these lock right in and give a steady read, to the hundredth of a mm or thousandth of an inch, they seem well calibrated . I measured a few feeler gauges and the calipers read them exactly right. Came with three batteries and I'm still on the first one despite my bad habit of leaving them on until they automatically shut off. I've been measuring things I don't really need measurements of just for the heck of it. Glad I chose this brand and I highly recommend them. ... show more

  • Pretty decent value
Model: DCLA-0805
I got the 8 inch version to supplement my 6" Mitutoyo for when I need something longer or when it'll be subjected to rougher handling like in the workshop. It comes in a blow molded case, nothing fancy but perfectly adequate. A nice touch in the case is room for a spare battery (which incidentally is included) and some padded posts on the inside lid that keep the caliper from bumping around inside the case. The LCD is clear and the numerals large. You'll get the most contrast from the LCD when you're looking down at it about a foot away from your body, as it normally would be when you're using it. The buttons are the usual mm/in/fraction toggle, a zero button, and an on-off switch. The overall feel is decent but don't expect it to be as silky smooth or as well damped as a unit costing five times as much. For the price I think it's a pretty good deal. The readings are accurate and repeatable and the precision is far greater than what most people will ever need. You won't use the on-off switch all that much though, as the unit turns itself on as soon as you open the caliper. The manufacturer says the unit will also auto shut-off but I haven't test that yet. One negative point - on my unit the battery cover seems to be held in place by nothing but willpower. It takes very little force for it to come off. I ended up having to use a piece of tape to hold it in place. ... show more

  • Buy it
Model: DCLA-0805
Look, if this caliper is in your budget, buy it. There's no need to do more searching. A caliper priced at $5 less just isn't worth it. It's ridiculously well made for what it is (it may be overkill). It is machined very well and it feels smooth, feel free to check the measurement tolerances for yourself. The regular gauge works well and the thumb screw action feels good. The inner diameter measurement works well as does the depth gauge at the end. I only found one flaw. On my unit, the plastic battery cover was manufactured way too small, leading to the battery cover sliding off repeatedly until I covered it with tape. I should also mention the nice, hard, impact resistant ABS plastic case. It has room for accessories sold separately that I'm not interested in and comes with spare batteries. I'm satisfied, apart from the battery door. ... show more

  • Its the little things
Model: DCLA-0805
This is a great set of calipers! I've been using a very cheap set for a long time now and these are just a whole new world. The accuracy is spot on every time and as a comparison my old set would be +/- 0.3mm so when the calipers were at 0 it would sometimes show 0.3 or -0.3 etc. so I constantly had to zero it out and make sure it was accurate. These I dont have to do that with. It's spot on every time. I also love that you can have it turned off and just start using them and it turns on. You don't even have to turn it on, just open them and start measuring and it turns on automatically. It a small but very welcome feature. They also feel very high quality and are very solid. Not wobbly or loose or anything like that. Simply great! ... show more

  • For the price these are very useable.
Model: DCLA-0805
These are decent enough for my use case. I am mostly doing work with 3d printing so accuracy down to about .1 mm is good enough. If I was a machinist or doing very tight tolerance work I would go for a Mitutoyo caliper knowing that they are the standard for excellence but when good enough is good enough these are a good choice. They have been durable and I get decent repeatability from these. If I ever get into true CNC work I would upgrade but keep these around for guests. I had a plastic version (cheap) and discovered if it isn't metal, it isn't worth it. ... show more
