  • Well made, light weight, many-many possible uses. My new favorite gadget!
I'm discovering that a lot of shots where I would previously use a gimbal, I'm using just this MOVO rig and adapting my technique, and getting better results! It's kind of like the difference between power steering (gimbal) and a sports car with rack-and-pinion steering. Sure, there are still situations where the smoothness and minimal effort of power steering is an advantage, but for precision performance, you want the rack-and-pinion steering in your sports car. And so it is with using this rig as a replacement for a gimbal. Really depends on what you are trying to achieve, but when I have something *very* specific in mind, it's much easier to "steer" the MOVO rig *exactly* where I want, instead of "negotiating" with a gimbal to do my bidding. At least for me, that's the case. Also, this MOVO rig is so light and compact and quick/easy to set up - and NEVER runs out of power - that I can spend more time shooting and less time doing setup, meaning I'm less likely to miss some opportunity to capture something in a hurry. I noticed in some of the older reviews people mentioning flaws (e.g., painted finish coming off), or making suggestions (e.g., anodized finish). Well, the unit I got DOES have an anodized finish which is very high quality. So my conclusion is that MOVO pays attention to complaints and suggestions and improves the product. I appreciate MOVO for that and I appreciate early adopters who gave honest reviews which led to the product being improved. There are a few things that I think could still be better: 1) I would like smaller increments in the angle adjustments. Not a lot smaller - I wouldn't want to risk structural integrity and I do like that it's really easy to do complementary angles that never end up off by "just a bit". So this is not a deal-breaker but a nice-to-have/if MOVO can pull it off at the same level of quality and utility. 2) I want an easy way to join 2 or more of these rigs. I have an application where having a rig like this about 2x the length, with roughly double the joints/adjustments, AND having a mounting plate at both ends, would be perfect. Other than using a couple of 3/8" - 1/4" adapter mounts and/or drilling an extra set of holes in the handle-end (where the MOVO logo is), I don't see any good options. So if MOVO did the drilling for me and supplied an extra knob with each unit, then I could just keep joining multiple rigs as needed. Maybe even create a Y-shaped or X-shaped rig. 3) The ability to turn the mounting plate 90 degrees (or re-attach it at 90 degrees) so the camera is still upright but the rig is "sideways" would be nice. 4) I agree with others about the mounting screw. A knurled thumb screw would be much better. The only downside I can see is if MOVO continues to improve the product, then Amazon will need to extend their rating system to go above 5 stars. :) ... show more

  • Excellent compact solution for mounting equipment with a variety of holding options.
In search of a light, compact, unobtrusive piece of equipment to mount a camera and some accessories, I came across this item. It is well designed, and it is not flimsy. The knobs are well designed. The three holes on each section is threaded (two 1/4-20, and one 3/8"), but it is painted over, so the threads are not clean. Painted over threads do not make make it impossible to thread items onto, but I purchased a 1/4-20 tap to clean the treads for smoother threading of items. I like that it can be shaped in several different shapes. Rifle stock: with the addition of a vertical grip, it is helpful in stabilization as it allows me to place my right hand on the vertical grip, left hand supporting the right and available to adjust the manual focus, and with the downward buttstock against my armpit. Lantern shape: this works well once the DSLR is balanced on the rig. Shoulder rig: this does not work well because the bar is too narrow and uncomfortable on the shoulder, and without counterweights for balance, and even with the addition of a vertical grip, it is useless for stabilization of DSLR video footage. Selfie stick shaped like the number 7: you would need an arm of steel to hold a DSLR or you'll end up with one after a few months of holding the DSLR like that. What this item might work better with is with a cell phone or a very light camera instead of a DSLR. Shaped as a square, I can place a Zoom H1 above with a Giottos mini ball head, and I can grip the setup on the right and left side of the cell phone. An additional vertical grip underneath (or placed horizontally at the top) gives it an extra grip for balanced one hand operation rather than unbalanced one-handed holding on the right or left side. The 1/4-20 screw requires a coin to tighten as it does not have anything to grip unlike D-rings. Here are some measurements to help you find a D-ring that will fit. Screw overall length: 11.96 mm. Screw shaft length: 7.96 mm. Screw shaft (unthreaded portion) diameter: 3.94 mm Screw protrusion above plate: 5.52 mm. Screw head diameter: 14.96 mm. Screw head depth: 3 mm. Camera mounting plate overall thickness: 5.36 mm. Camera mounting plate bottom recess depth: 2.31 mm. Camera mounting plate bottom recess width: 17.19 mm. As such, a D-ring that has similar dimensions should be perfect. Or you can save a few dollars and carry a quarter with you. I rated this item a 4 star because of the blemish caused by poor painting techniques, which you can see in one of the photos. As another reviewer noted, the paint easily scratches off. Anodization rather than painting would be excellent but would add significant cost to the product. Powdercoating would be durable, but would add weight and cost. While this item is innovative and well designed, I believe that this item could be cheaper than the price of $59.95. I purchased it at $49.95, but I still feel it could be cheaper. This will be excellent while hiking and for travel, where typically a shoulder rig is impractical to use or impractical to carry around. Camera cages may function similarly with enough add-ons, but they lack the flexibility that this item offers in transforming to a different shape easily. ... show more

  • Another use: Cage for your DSLR
Although not my original intention. I was pleasantly surprised that it was able to fit the Panasonic GH2 as a cage. It barely had width clearance but worked out for this camera model. I was going to use it to add stability for my DSLR (as a third point of contact). It feels light but very solid. Wished it has an extra segment as well as more finer locking positions for the segments. ... show more

  • High quality product and versitile
I have been able to use this product for a little while now and I can see it will be an excellent tool for my photography. A very high quality fit and feel, and can be configured for a lot of camera usage. I can see I will be carrying this in the field for both use with my DSLR and small video camera. Multiple threaded holes on all the sections will offer additions if needed. I added a cold hot shoe on mine to connect a remote microphone. I can configure the three sections to fit the need at the time of what I am shooting with. The only reason I did not give it five stars was that I thought the screw for mounting the camera to base could have been designed better. A larger, knurled type screw ( not as large as the other blue locks) that would fit up into the track, and allow you to tighten the screw by hand would have made this perfect. Although it locks tight, it requires the use of a coin, small key, or screw driver to get real tight. Usually I have something (except for a coin) handy, there may be times I don't. I was able to find a screw mount from another camera mount that works somewhat for now. See the photo. This thumb screw also allows me to mount it to a tripod mount without removing the bracket. I recommend this product and look forward to using it. ... show more
