Description

This kit is required to mount thermowell dial thermometers to your brew kettle, mash tun, or sparge water pot. This 3-pc design has been proven not to leak a drop as long as you wrap the thermowell where the nut will be with a generous amount of teflon pipe tape. Kit includes a 304 stainless steel washer for the outside of the kettle, and a stainless 1/2" NPT nut with FDA O-Ring for the inside of the kettle.

    • Not sure how this was ever going to work
I bought this to mount a 1/2 NPT thermometer in a stainless kettle, but this review holds for what ever 1/2 NPT threaded device you are trying to mount in a bulkhead. The enclosed washer was significantly larger than 1/2 NPT threads, and my thermometer could fit right through the hole, all the way through, and come out the other end. I was able to make a tighter fitting washer by drilling out a 1/2 inch washer. The nut has a nice relief to hold the gasket, but with only two threads deep, there is little hope of getting a water tight seal between the thermometer's 1/2 NPT threads and the nut. this leaves a path for water to leak through the threads. On the outside, a gasket seals between the washer and the bulkhead, but there is no way to seal between the washer and the thermometer. This leaves you with a water path from the inside through the threads, then between the washer and the thermometer, so not a water tight fitting, but a constant slow dripping fitting. The nut is also loose fitting and I am not sure if it is truly 1/2 NPT, or just close. The threads are roughly cut and contain sharp burrs. ... show more

Washer was slightly too big for the thermometer backing that I had and wouldn't seat correctly. Quick trip to the mega-homegood store solved that problem. For that reason I deduct 1 star. Otherwise install was a breeze. Drilled out a 7/8" hole and mounted the thermometer in the bulkhead in minutes. Used the recommended procedure for applying teflon tape, and I had no leak the first time I tested it. Would buy again, now that I have a surplus of the correctly sized washers. ... show more

First off, this kit does work and seems to be holding. The problem I found with this mounting kit is that the tolerance of the nut is not a snug fit, with the nut screwed onto the temp probe there is a bit too much play, as I said it does work but a tighter fit would make me more comfortable in depending on this to hold, I drilled a close tolerance hole to minimize any movement with the probe once it was installed. The last thing I want is to have a leak right in the middle of a brew session. ... show more
