  • Learned Too Late - After signal loss would not automatically reconnect and was not discoverable from ISP side. -
Color: Black
It took two months of unreliable internet to realize that the problem was this modem that did not detect when it had lost signal, and could not be detected by the ISP when it went into this state where all the lights indicated it was online, but it wasn't. So every time there was a internet glitch where signal was lost momentarily, the only way to get back online was to physically power it off, disconnect the cable for several seconds and then re-power the modem which would then reconnect to the isp and work great until another glitch... it didn't detect so it never attempted to reconnect.. Having the isp attempt a modem reset had no impact. My modem is on another floor, so I was getting weary. The only way I discovered the issue was absolutely the modem was disconnecting it from the cable while it was still powered on. There it set all its indicator lights indication normal online connection. So, by the time we figured all this out the return deadline had passed. That sucks and so does this modem. ... show more

  • Heat and Power Measurements
Color: Black
This review is being written the same day I got the modem, so don't rely on it for long term impressions. The setup process went fine and the modem works correctly. I'm getting the speeds that I pay for, same as what I had previously. I purchased the modem because my provider is in the process of upgrading their network, and when the upgrades are complete I'll need a 16 channel modem to remain on my current plan with the new speeds they'll offer. I wanted to write this review to provide some useful data for anyone else considering this model, because it's something I wish I could have found documented for newer modems before I purchased it. First is the heat produced by the device. I've attached a photo taken with a thermal camera, showing the modem after being in use for 2 hours. It reads 111 degrees Fahrenheit at the hottest point. (Approx. 44 degrees Celcius) This means that the modem is warm to the touch, but not hot. I also measured the idle power consumption of the modem using a kill-a-watt device. This is with the modem connected to the network and some devices connected via a router having some connections open, but no active downloads or streaming occurring. Idle power consumption averaged at 7.7 Watts. I like the modem itself, although I'm not sure at this point if I'm going to keep it. Compared to my previous modem, (SB6141) both the power consumption (5.9W vs 7.7W) and heat output (98F vs 111F) are higher. On the plus side, it offers twice as many channels and twice the maximum speed. Considering the performance bump, the difference between the two devices likely means the MB7420 is actually better from a performance per watt perspective. If you need the kind of speed this modem is capable of, it seems like a very good option. ... show more

  • Comcast xfinity Customers Beware!!!
Color: Black
Do not buy this hardware if you want speeds greater than 300 mbps. I know, the listing says it supports 600mbps, it does not. Their support team will confirm that this device CANNOT support 600 mbps speeds on comcast xfinity, Cox, Charter and many others. The title of the listing says otherwise, but they know they take advantage by people "not reading" the fine print. Here is a message from their support team: "We advertise what the product is capable of, the hardware on the product, regardless of who is it connected to, what service provider. We aren't the ones issuing the speed, I am not telling Comcast to only allow this product to reach 374Mbps, it is their network telling us, and every manufacturer, how fast our products are allowed to go on their network. I'm not blaming the ISP, with all due respect, I am letting you know who sets the rule for this allowance of speed. " ... show more

  • Easy install for Comcast/Xfinity customers
Color: Black
If you have Comcast, this is really easy to install. I swapped it with my 5 year old Motorola surfboard modem (4 down, 1 up) and waited about 10 minutes as it updated the modem automatically (the modems lights put on quite a show). Then I was redirected to the 'install your purchased modem' page in my web browser. I logged in and then the Comcast server added the modem to it's system. One last refresh of the modem happened automatically and in another 3 minutes I was connected to the internet. No phone call was needed. My download speeds were maxed out at 15 mega-bits on the old modem. Now I get the full 25 mega-bits. I was already at the maximum upload speed, so that did not change. ... show more

  • If you connect to Comcast, this is the internet modem you want to own
Color: Black
I am so very glad I have this cable modem for internet access; I've owned it since June of 2017 and I'm writing this comment a year later in July 2018. It fits perfectly into the Comcast system with no problem at all. Comcast Tech Support found the device connected in my home and it went on-line on the first try. My return on investment to stop paying the $10/mo rental fee ended in 7 months. Comcast has upped my data rate to 150 Mbps, and I am getting 14-18 MB/s download speed with no hiccups. Sometimes my download pipeline is greater than what Comcast promises. I check Speedtest.net once a month or so, and I have never seen a performance drop. Cycling on the modem to connect to the Comcast servers is very quick (25 secs). This is an excellent investment in internet hardware. It is well built. It also needs air room so the heat can dissipate; I would not put this in a closed space or cabinet. ... show more
