Description

My first crush wasn’t a person—it was a motorcycle. I was 24 years old when I fell for a '78 Sanglas 400F, a Spanish classic that had belonged to my father. By then, it had spent its last days under a dingy blanket, consumed by dust and nibbled by mice. Determined to give it a second chance, I dove into restoring it. There was just one problem: I didn’t know a thing about mechanics. Back then, I would have given anything for someone to sit down with me and explain how that motorcycle worked—its parts, its quirks, and how to fix the issues keeping it silent. Most of all, I craved an explanation in plain, simple words I could actually understand. No matter how hard I looked, all I found were overly technical manuals or conflicting advice that left me more confused than before. That’s why I wrote this book: to explain how motorcycles work, to guide you through their parts and teach you about common breakdowns and their solutions—but always in a friendly, conversational way. I won’t bog you down with jargon you can easily Google. Instead, I’ll walk you through the basic mechanics of a motorcycle step by step, using words anyone can follow. We’ll start from scratch, covering the simplest elements, and work our way to the final bolt worth knowing. Writing this book has taught me just as much as repairing and restoring bikes has, and it’s an honor to share that journey with you now. I hope it lives up to your expectations. Let’s dive in. • What I’ve been looking for
Format: Paperback
Im only about 40 pages in, but I can already say that this is the information I’ve been searching for. Everything regarding motorcycle engines on the internet is too convoluted. This is simple, straightforward and apart from some typos, pure gold. If you’re looking for the basics of engine function, this is your answer. ... show more

  • Significant translation issues
Format: Paperback
Good: I have a better general grasp of the mechanical systems of motorcycles, and this was the goal when I bought the book. Bad: This is a self-published book and it shows. There are no signs of it having been properly edited, but worst of all, my edition is an especially bad translation of (presumably) the Spanish original. Idioms and analogies do not translate well and are confusing. In some cases the text refers to diagrams using entirely different language, rendering those illustrations useless. Wherever the author refers to regulations, they appear to be specific to Spain/the EU. Something like that is usually addressed in a foreword or introduction, but maybe I missed it. I'm sure the author has real expertise in this subject, but sharing expertise in this way can lead to a fundamental misunderstanding of what he is trying to teach. I think I was able to work past these issues, but this book cost as much as one without the problems. Again, I *think* I have a better understanding of motorcycles, but I will need to get another book just to check. ... show more

  • NOT a step-by-step guide...
Format: Paperback
...but it is a good survey of the different systems and parts of a motorcycle, what they do and how they work. Recommended if you're unfamiliar before grabbing the shop manual. Written (and self published) by a non-native English speaker, but clear and fluent.

  • A friendly roadmap for newbies
Format: Kindle
This book on mechanics is seriously top-notch! The author have managed to take this complex stuff and serve it up in a way that's easy to swallow. It's like having a buddy who's a mechanic, but way more patient. Kudos for making it all feel doable and even kinda fun.
