  • Good read.
Loved this but i wish it would have had more photos and visual explanations of how things work and are used.

  • Unexpectedly smaller, but overall ok.
Smaller than expected

  • Well written, very informative
As something of an interested amateur in the realm of tools and wood working this has really helped to guide me through the very confusing and often conflicting world of what to buy, what do I need, and what do I want as I start to build out my own workshop. It's got a lot of practical tips on when to spend the money on the top of the line and when you don't have to splurge. And it's a great guide to know exactly what tool to look for to get me past the next challenge in whatever project I'm working on or thinking about starting. Jeff is a fantastic writer who makes the material easy to approach and engaging. Plus in reading it, I've learned a little about the history and development of each tool in the book. I've thoroughly enjoyed that as well. ... show more

  • Helpful, attractive, and easy to use guide.
When working with my dad on a project, he always seems to know (and somehow own) the exact tool needed for the job - and knows how to use it. While this book won’t replace 70+ years of life experience, it might be the next best thing I’ve been slowly reading it since it arrived, but you don’t honestly need to read the whole thing to get great use out of it. The book is divided into four main sections - “measure, cut, fasten, and shape” - to help you narrow it down if you’re looking for something specific. Finally, while you can’t judge a book by its cover, it does not hurt that it is a handsome volume that looks nice on my shelf. ... show more

  • A bit disappointed
I got taken in by the reviews on this one. The book is well-written enough, but it’s not detailed and doesn’t have nearly enough photos. What I was looking for specifically is a text that showed exactly what the different kinds of say pliars were with photos to identify each one and an explanation of when you would use each kind and why. A bonus would have been some kind of useful instruction on how to use the tool—where to hold and how much force to apply, etc. This book starts down that path but stops far short, glossing over the details and useful taxonomy. ... show more

  • Fantastic read!
Highly, highly recommended. I certainly imagine this book as a helpful resource for someone with a deep understanding of building and construction. That said, it's also very approachable for someone like myself whose skill set doesn't extend too far beyond hammer and nail. The book not only synthesizes how to use specific tools but also shares why they're used and in some cases even gives a light history on the origin of the tool. I enjoyed the tips and tricks boxes and the look and feel of the book - from illustrations to layout to font - is really well done. ... show more

  • A 'must read' for anyone wanting to learn more about tools
I’m amazed by how much practical and entertaining information on tools that this book covers. It felt concise and easy to read for beginners, but thorough enough for experts alike. Jeff Waldman's writing style flows so well that it's fun and interesting cover-to-cover. Whether you’re looking for a great starting point to learn about tools, a comprehensive guide of everything under the sun that one can use to build stuff, or anything in between, this is the book for you. ... show more

  • Great for new homeowner!
As a new homeowner it is very over whelming to know what tools to buy for simple around the house fixes, especially when the initial investment can be expensive. This book makes it very approachable to all the different variety of tools you need for beginners and as you get more comfortable. Easy to read and digest. Great to come back to when you get more advanced in your knowledge. Highly recommend! ... show more
