Using Morton Clean and Protect Pellets in your water softener will leave behind significantly less calcium and manganese insolubles in your brine tank than salt pellets. Morton Clean and Protect Pellets contain a water-soluble resin cleaning agent. Morton Clean and Protect Pellets are NSF certified. They also meet or exceed ANSI/AWWA B200 standard for sodium chloride. For optimum performance, check the salt levels in your water softener, and keep the tank at least half full. Bought ten bags Morton yellow bag water softener pellets from HD in Dec. As I poured in two bags, noticed the pellets were mot the usual white: they were pale gray. Now, several inches of of black dirt all around the salt tank rim, and salt system filters will need to be located and cleaned (a project in itself). Our water filtration system costs over $7,000 and $1,200 anually to maintain. NOT OK for contaminated salt to mess with our system. Called Morton curst service; the rep was pleasant. Yet, she repeatedly asserted that it is normal and the dirt is "actually salt"--just not the usual color you expect"--even after seeing these photos! See photos. No recognition that I got a batch contaminated with a lot of dirt---and no recognition or apology that there is a real cost to clean out my system. The rag I used to wipe just an inch of the dirt away looks like I've wiped it on a dirty engine. She was firm that the best they can do is send me coupons for 4 free bags--or $28. My costs: 1.5 - 2 hour's of my time; round trip to Home Depot to return the faulty bags: 18 miles @ .55 a mile; cost of a tech to clean out the system: $250-350. Possible damage to a $7,000 system: TBD. Not OK in any sense. AVOID Morton! Buy Diamond Crystal salt instead. ... show more
