I’d been looking at this reel on Moonshines Website and was surprised to find it on Amazon. Ordered it and received 2 days later. Right out of the box I was impressed by the feel and quality of this reel. Took it to my local fly shop to get backing and line put on it and the shop said it was the first one they had seen but were impressed by the price and quality as well. Looks great. Butt the functionality SUCKS the retrieve is stiff and not at all smooth by any means the drag is adjustment is sloppy and hangs up. The design of the internal working parts is very similar to the cheep no name brand reels and the plastic handle come on now it’s 300 bucks. I’m not a pro by any means. I do however own several high dollar reels not going to mention any brands and some cheap stuff and I would put this in the bottom end of the cheep stuff as far as the function goes..Now as far as the look it is a Beautiful real. I got this to match a Moonshine rod. Love the rod aesthetically they’re a perfect match. Functionality the rod is perfect but the real sucks. I apologize for the brutal review moonshine but its an honest one. ... show more

When I first saw this reel I thought it seemed pretty simple for such an expensive reel. It didn't take long to realize just how finely crafted this reel is. The machining is so refined and the tolerances are tight - it is just a very nicely made reel. One nice thing about the reel is the removable (meaning interchangeable) spool. Unlike some reels, the knob that attaches the spool to the reel does not come loose - it's part of the spool assembly. Having lost a knob midstream while trying to switch from a floating line to a sink-tip line, this is a great feature! It is really lightweight, and I like the added color scheme with the extra copper color. It just looks nice. The reel also comes with a nice neoprene pouch to protect it from any damage in transit. A word of caution. If you intend to switch over from right-hand retrieve to left, take a look at the short video instructions on the Moonshine website. The video made it a lot clearer how to do it than the paper instructions included with the reel. The paper instructions don't mention the little part and screw that fell out and took me ten minutes to figure out what they were and how to replace them. The video shows you how. One thing to be aware of, the Amazon page mentions a lifetime warranty. Actually, the reel is warrantied for one year, after which you can have it repaired or replace for a $65 fee (current price). In the long run that may work out better, but it pays to know this up front. I'm impressed with the quality of this reel, and I plan on taking a look at a matching Moonshine Rod to go along with this reel in the near future. ... show more

I ordered this reel for my husband an avid trout and fly fisherman. He took it out yesterday for an inaugural trip. He said, it is a nicely built sturdy reel, with reliable drag. It has a good solid weight to it without being too heavy to carry. It comes packaged in a convenient carrying/storage case. Bonus: the guys at Cabela's who loaded the line were quite envious of it. It is nice looking and handles well. He got the four-weight version and it handled a 16" rainbow trout with no issue. Overall, he recommends this reel if you have the money to spend and want something to make the other fisherman jealous. However, if you are on a budget there are other reels at much more affordable price points that handle just as well, but may not have quite the street (river) cred. This reel is to fly fishing what name brand sneakers are to high school, very nice to have but not necessary for success. ... show more

Honest review here. Beautiful crafted reel at a semi reasonable price... Love the feel, weight and speed. PROS This is a fully machined Forged Aluminum reel sealed and has disc drag and a G10 handle. I love the increased retrieval rate and larger backing capacity... we fish bonefish / tarpon so this is very helpful when the run like crazy! It's a well thought out improvement over other top line brands...for half the price too! It's dual conversion so you can fish it left or right hand retrieval! CONS The only con I would see here is that it's a bit light on paint and worried that it will scratch.. it's so good looking hopefully not. After some great tight lines on some bones in south FL we can highly recommend this rod! ... show more

I first heard of Moonshine Rod Co. about six months ago when I ran across one of their fly rods here on Amazon. It looked like a really nice rod and others seemed to like it, so I took a chance and ordered it. I was really impressed with the overall quality of the rod. Quality-wise it’s every bit as good as one of my upper-level Orvis rods. And that brings us to this fly reel. I am equally impressed with the overall quality of this Creede fly reel. It is lightweight, but it is very sturdy/solid, and it is machined incredibly well. I looked the reel over very closely and I really can’t see any room for improvement machining-wise. I haven’t taken the reel apart, but the internal workings feel like they are made from very high-quality parts/materials. This fly reel is incredibly smooth. And the drag is super smooth, too. I think you would have to be insanely picky to find any faults with this reel. Especially given its modest price compared to the high-end (overpriced) brands. I honestly don’t think you’ll find better fishing gear for the price. In fact, I don’t think you’ll find better fishing gear for twice the price.
