  • Excellent rod for the sticker price!!!
Size: 9'0'' LW8 Style: With Extra Tip
After testing this rod thoroughly I can honestly say this rod can handle a fish! I am very pleased with the performance of this rod for the price. I am an avid fly fisherman here on the West Coast, and have been wanting to add an 8wt to my arsenal for some time. The Riverbend series by Aventik is a great rod for those looking to save a little cash but jot sacrifice performance. I have owned their Whisperer and Stalker models and fished them for trout and love those rods. The Riverbend is an excellent addition to the team. The rod casts heavy flies with ease and precision when paired with the right fly line. I have cast both floating and full sink lines with this rod with no issues. The rod had enough backbone to turn the nice Ling Cod pictured below around and it put a serious bend in the rod! I love the medium fast action, the butt section has plenty of muscle but the tip section has that nice deep bend I love to see. You can really feel the fish unlike many of the superfast action bug name rods. I personally think many of those rods have no soul, and are tailored to helping poor casters get more distance. Also just a status symbol, let’s be honest…… if companies like Aventik can make a solid rod like this and sell it for $100 why the hell would anyone pay $1000 dollars for a Sage rod unless they just want to throw money away and show off their big name rod to their buddies. These rods put fish in the net just as well for a tenth of the cost!!! So give this rod a try, you won’t be disappointed. ... show more

  • True 5 wt rod
Size: 9'0'' LW5 Style: Only Rod
Today I got to try out Aventiks new 9Ft. Riverbend 4 piece fly rod in 5wt. First thing that catches your eye when unpacking the rod is the color, yes that dosent affect the operation but being visual beings that is the way it goes. I must say at first I wasn’t all onboard with the striking green hue but it does grow on you, enough about that. Second thing you notice is the build quality, and quality is the key word. Expertly assembled with attention to every detail. The afore mentioned finish is blemish free with a high quality clear coat to protect the rod from the elements. The four piece set up assemblies easily with a rock solid feel to it. The rod seat firmly holds the reel in place with zero movement once the reel is locked in place. Beautiful cork grip is ergonomically shaped to fit your hand as if it was custom sized to my hand, being somewhere in the middle of the spectrum as for hand size it was neither to big to comfortably hold or to small that it was squirming around, in my case it fit like a glove. A mixture of stripping and snake style guides are beautifully and carefully spaced along the rods length. Constructed of stainless steel the line flows thru the guides with little if any drag on the line allowing for smooth false and back/forward casting. Along with the guides a hook keeper to hold your fly while walking stream side is attached the same as the guides, wrapped expertly like fine artwork and finished with a blemish free epoxy coating. As I said this is a four piece rod build, each section easily mates to its partner with strong and durable ferrels holding the assembled rod firmly together, acting and reacting as though it’s a one piece rod with out the associated problems that one would undoubtedly encounter when trying to transport or store a one piece of 9 foot length, in my world that give a life expectancy of hours lol. Now for the part we are all waiting for, how does it function? Well compared to others in my vast collection, which includes offerings from Fenwick, Orvis, Whitewater and others from Aventik among others I’d say this one is right up there with if not hands down better then most. First off this is a true 5wt. A lot of rods the weight it’s listed as is just a suggestion, not a tried and tested to assessment. Usually uplining to a heavier weight line is beneficial to getting the best out of the rod, sometimes dropping the line weight, but usually the afore mentioned uplining is the normal. Now that’s not a bad thing in its self, but if I’m setting up for a 1wt set up to delicately present tiny drys with a 6 foot rod on tiny mountain Brook trout streams I don’t want to weigh them down and spoil my presentation by needing to use a three weight line, i set up for and want a one weight rod. Once unpacked I set this up with Aventiks new FLK II large arbor aluminum fly reel, which my review of can also be found here, and loaded it with Aventik backing line and 5 wt floating fly line and headed to the local Glen to entice some wary trout to my selection of dries and nymphs. I must note the thing that impressed me the most was when I got up in the stream section leading into the Glen. Being the normal tree infested…lol..fly fisherman will get it, narrow clear water mountain streams found in my local, and having a 9’ rod never the less, I thought this ought to be fun. Well let me tell you this is where this rod shined. Instead of my usual bycatch of wild oaks, maples or pine trees, I found that I could easily roll cast the width of the mountain streams. This thing, whether built with it in mind or not is one of the best, if not the best, in my collection for this technique hands down. Casting in the more open sections showed me its other attributes, effortless casting to trout feeding 60, 70’ out from the shore. This rod has a in tune feel from rod to hand transmitting all the feel one looks for in a fly rod. False casting is a breeze as the rod loads up and transmits that inertia to the line in a manner that is felt with each forward and back cast. After a few get to know you false casts I was not required to watch the rod and line to synch my motions with the rods action. I could feel the rod load up when my back cast motion stopped, and feel the weight and motion as it transitioned into my forward cast, easily false casting and adding yards of line on each stroke. The line shot out and laid nice and straight on the water time after time. All that with as I mentioned using a 5wt line, no need to step up to 6 wt to squeeze that extra distance out of the combo. Now I’m not saying that this would not benefit from maybe stepping up to a 6wt, I’m saying that for the first time in a long time I didn’t feel the need to go that route. So in ending what’s my final determination? There’s not much I would have changed, the color is a purely subjective thing, and is growing on me, it’s just really, really, really green..lol. My biggest con and disappointment is in the packaging. I own several fly rods and Tenkara rods offered by Aventik, and was disappointed in the fact that it comes in a flimsy ass plastic garbage of a tube. Every other offering I have from Aventik comes in a sturdy storage tube or soft bag of some sort, not so in this case. Is a cost thing? Early production? Not sure but I’d gladly foot the extra bucks to have a custom built for the rod storage case to protect what I’m sure will be one of my most used, and transported fly rods, just saying Aventik. Not a deal breaker but it’s the little things like this, that Aventik covered and thought of, the little things that impressed me, that are missing in this offering, Hopfully a storage tube or such will be in the works. As for the pros? This thing is equally at home in the open areas as it is in the tight quarters, it roll casts like nobody’s business. Being I’m making such a big deal of this attribute you must surely note how impressed I am in that regard. The build quality is superb, the materials, the finish, all around the board. The feel is on par with rods much more expensive. And let’s face reality, this is a sport where you definitely get what you paid for, so receiving so much for so little is a nice change. The perfect rod in my opinion for someone just getting into this sport, when I first got into it we didn’t have this quality available at this price, if we did I might of latched on to fly fishing the first time around instead of being falsely led to believe it wasn’t for me. So there you have it, wether a first time participant or a life long partaker of this wonderful way to enjoy the great outdoors, give this a try, I’m sure you will be as thrilled with it as I am. ... show more

  • Excellent value and quality for the money, with two criticisms easily remedied.
Size: 10'0'' LW8 Style: Only Rod
This rod offers excellent quality and value, either as a backup or primary rod. I use it mainly for coastal salt-water fly fishing. I like fly rods with medium-fast action, not too stiff, and this rod is perfect for my casting action. I haven't used it long enough to comment on its durability. You'll save big $ with this rod in comparison with most US-made rods, and the quality of performance and finish are very good to excellent. This is a low-cost rod but it's not cheaply made, not low quality. However, I have a couple of criticisms: 1. It doesn't come with a durable rod tube or cloth sleeve, items you'd have to buy separately. The manufacturer's tube is clear flexible plastic, with plastic-foam inserts to hold the rod sections in place without rubbing together. This was protectively shipped inside a long cardboard box. If you're going to transport this rod in luggage or as carry-on, I would recommend buying or making a better protective case from plastic pipe or something, including a cloth sleeve with 4 compartments. The rod I bought is a 4-piece, ten-foot rod. Its case is 33 1/2" long and it fits inside my rolling duffle bag. Of course, the more common nine-foot rods would be shorter than 33 1/2." Still good value for money, though. 2. I like a Full Wells style handle on my heavier fly rods. This rod has a Full Wells cork grip of good quality, which was one reason I bought it. However, the grip could be a little longer and a little larger in diameter. It is almost too small for my hand. Still castable, still tolerable, but would be even better if the grip was larger in dimension, especially at the front (top?) of the grip, which is sanded down to a smaller diameter than the diameter at the base of the grip near the reel seat. If this handle was reversed, it would be great for me. But to give credit, I always take XL gloves and maybe my hands are larger than most. Anyway, I solved this problem by slipping a thin-walled foam tube over the cork grip, to make it a little fatter and longer. I happen to have tubing that worked, but could also have used some of the many sizes & varieties of heat-shrink tubing that's available online for grips on tool handles, etc. ... show more
