  • Great Outfit
I ordered Rio fly line to go with this rig. I had to order the line from a different vendor. The outfit arrived a week early before my line did. The standard line that comes with the outfit casts streamers with ease. I fish for large mouth bass and I was able to throw #2 and #6 bass and steamer flies. I was initially concerned about the fly line but after casting for 3 hours I can't tell you the difference between this and SA GPX. I was able to shoot long distances in the wind and turn over large flies. That's all we want right? I lost my TFO 8wt so this was my replacement. Comparing the two rods the quality is good. Its not like my TFO but I can't find anything bad to say. Its lite and is a fast action rod. The only I miss from my TFO is that this rod is missing the aligngment dots on the sections. The reel is plastic but its light and does the job. If you are expecting a 200$ quality reel you will be disappointed. No complaints, the reel hold my line well! Perfect starter rod and replacement for the weekend warrior. Out of the box you can fish. ... show more

  • I will say that while fishing for bass I've hooked into some nice size fish and this rod was up to the ...
I needed a fly rod to turn over some big fly's. I have an Orvis Clearwater in a 5 weight I'd say for everyday fishing I prefer the lighter rod. I will say that while fishing for bass I've hooked into some nice size fish and this rod was up to the test. It allowed to to play the fish a bit stronger than I might have with the 5 weight. The fly line is decent and gets the job done. I replaced the leader just because I couldn't really tell what the tippet size was and the pound test. I bet it was somewhere in the specifications but I build my own leaders to spec so I just replaced it so that I knew what I was fishing with. The reel is a large arbor. Constructed from plastic but for the price point and combo pack I felt that it was adequate. The reel has a felt bag to go with it but you'll be carrying the rod and reel separate on those outings. The rod holder is pretty nice. Good construction (as expected from Orvis). Overall I'd say I'm happy w/ the purchase. I shuddered to think of purchasing a fly rod online without being able to see it, feel it and cast it but for the price point I decided to take the risk. I must say I'm not disappointed. That's part of the reason I went with this rod / reel combo from Orvis - they haven't disappointed yet. ... show more

  • Arrived on time and in excellent protective packaging.
Fantastic addition to my fishing collection. Arrived exactly as advertised, just tie on a fly and get to work. This has already been a valued addition to my traveling fishing equipment in the RV.

  • Amazing beginner fly Rod
Size: 8-Weight, 9'
This fly setup is amazing for beginner’s, it is really durable, the case is very well made. The reel itself is plastic which I did not know, I was expecting aluminum but nonetheless it is still a really good reel. Sometimes the rod will come apart when using it, I am also not the best at fly fishing so maybe it is my firm and I am just too aggressive with it, but overall it is a really good setup and I would highly suggest to anyone looking into it. Orvis is a phenomenal brand. ... show more

  • Orvis Encounter Fly Rod Combo was my Choice for my First Fly Rod.
Size: 5-Weight, 8'6"
As a newcomer to the world of fly fishing, I chose the Orvis Encounter as my first fly rod combo purchase. This choice was not made lightly, but after narrowing it down to three contenders that were within my budget, the Orvis name and reputation won me over. While I've had this combo for only a week, I have been able to take it fishing and catch my first trout with it. The 8'6" 5wt was my choice, and the rod felt more than capable handling the catch. This is a 4-piece rod with dots to line up where each section connects. The reel seems to be made of a type of ABS plastic, but it is substantial, and I don't anticipate any issues with it. It also came preloaded with backing, fly line, and tippet. I'm happy with my purchase. ... show more

  • Great Set-up for Entry Level Fly Fishing
This has proven to be a great entry level fly setup. I wasn't sure I'd get hooked on fly fishing I didn't want to spend a great deal of money, so after some research it appeared this outfit was the way to go over the basspro/cabelas outfits. This outfit has now been on a week long camping trip sitting in the bottom of a muddy canoe when it was not being used, as well as 20+ single day outings. I've caught a good deal of freshwater fish with it in both FL and the TX Hill Country and couldn't be happier. The reel is plastic, but still operates perfectly even after being completely submerged multiple times every time it's been out. The guides are still in good shape as well as the rod and cork. I've put some serious strain on the rod mostly trying to get my fly dislodged from rocks/brush, but also on some larger bass and freshwater drum and I'm confident in its durability at this point. I have been bit by the fly fishing bug and my next purchase will be a high quality 8wt setup for inshore fishing and eventually a higher quality 4 or 5wt setup with a shorter rod for tighter creeks and I'm sure I will notice slight improvements in all aspects over the Encounter, with that being said the Encounter will always have a spot in my arsenal and if you're looking to get into fly fishing I highly recommend it. ... show more
