There is a collar that is around the. drive shaft and designed/meant to allow the operator to increase the resistance to turning the motor. This is an important safety feature that is poorly designed. The male screw/stud is metal and has a thumb head for tightening into a female thread in the collar. The issue is that the female threads are plastic! You do not have to tighten the collar without stripping those female threads. ... show more

I bought this about a year ago to power a little 12' flat bottom micro boat that my 6 year old son and I fish in. Sometimes it's nice to leave the big boat at home and just get out for a few hours. We've trolled for hours and cruised the salt flats with this motor without a care in the world. It's light weight and easy to operate. We've put some hours on it and no issues at all. Only minor assembly required. Motor runs quiet and smooth. I use it to troll in my 13' Boston Whaler with one passenger. Use an Interstate Marine battery with 135 ampere hour rating. Even with fully charged battery, only lasted 3 hours at 3/4 throttle. A little surprised. It ran out of juice before I ran out of patience fishing. ... show more

Let me start by saying I am a fan of Minn Kota. I have used this motor and its predecessors for 12 years, and it is a workhorse. I can say unequivocally, though, that this motor does not live up to the Riptide reputation. Calling it a saltwater motor is verging on false advertising. It has a very vulnerable 5 speed switch that is not sealed. If you use it in saltwater, be prepared for an annual replacement. Also, there are open drainage holes underneath the head. If any water gets in these (from rinsing, etc) it finds its way down the shaft and kills the motor. Better not to rinse it, just wipe it down with a damp rag. The warranty is good, except you are responsible for shipping it to an authorized repair facility. With its dimensions and hefty weight, expect to ship it on the slow boat and pay thru the nose, especially if you are in a remote location like I am in the Florida Keys. If it comes back from the shop and still doesn't work right, you have no recourse but to pay to ship it back ($50 last time). If you depend on your motor, better to upgrade to one of the models with sealed electronics. If you are cheap like me, and don't mind babysitting, this works ok. ... show more

This motor is top of the line for this particular power and use. We need it for shallow brackish water so the saltwater design helps protect it against the salt in the water. We couldn't find this version of a Minn Kota motor anywhere within an hour of where we live nor was it otherwise available online within one month of shipping. We paid slightly more to get it from here and it was delivered in two days. So pleased. ... show more
