  • Plenty of thrust
Works great! American made!

  • Strange Power Output
Strange Power Output. Level 1/2 seem the same. Level 3 to 4 is ridiculously different, like low to high. And level 4-5 is no significant difference. Same for reverse. This is realistically a 3 power level forward- low, med, high, and a 2 power level reverse, Low/High. The main carbon fiber shaft flexes a ton under medium and high speed. This of course reduces thrust effectiveness due to the maligned vector of flow. I prefer the old steel shafts. That all being said. Plenty of power to make quiet adjustments to my 1700lb 24' pontoon boat while fishing in the shallows. Also- not recommended for more than 100deg steering cone. As you try to steer closer to the 120-180 degree mark.. the thing skids right off the transom. Meaning the support/clamp screws are very under designed. Poor hold from side thrusting. And since the clamp press threaded receiver is plastic, I would not try to over turn them, because the steel screws will crack the plastic receiver/chassis they live in. Alloy parts please, Minn Kota ... show more

  • Does not hold up
Worked fine for a short period of time. Motor works out of the water, but looses power in the water. Same outcome with brand new battery. Minn Kota was not helpful in tech support or warranty help.

  • Great Motor
I have used this motor (C2 50) on my 20 foot fiberglass day-sailor several times now. It is a fairly light boat at about 1000 pounds weight and about a ton and a half displacement (19'x6'8"x18" draft at Waterline). It runs fine in light airs and managed to push me against a 10 knot wind with 1 to 2 knot current, but very slowly. I plan on buying another and placing one each side of the tiller so that I can have that extra power when I need it. The one I currently have is offset on the port side of the transom and after setting speed I just use the tiller. By the way, as others have suggested, it runs the smoothest in number 4 speed (but 5 is ok too just not really needed most of the time). The motor seemed easy on my deep cycle battery and only got it down to 50% or so after several (3+) hours running. My complaints are more to do with the marketing side. The radical change in price from 160 something to 220 something is certainly the seller's prerogative but the corresponding change to a higher marked out price (300 something) is somewhat dishonest but standard practice. I will wait till January for the price to come back down to "affordable". The other item is the fact that these motors are "freshwater only" which people who have used these type units for years know is mostly "bilgewater". Yes I know about the warranty voiding, paint peeling, washing off with fresh water, etc.. and again it is the manufacturer's right. My problem with it is the continuing move by companies selling boating products to help push boating further and further into the rich man's realm. It actually takes very little to make these units more resistant to brackish water (yes, you can do it yourself!) but once you look for a "real" "marine" product you see an instant doubling of price (or more). Perhaps that is reasonable for blue water sailors but casual and coastal boaters shouldn't have to be exploited to enjoy the water. This is a good company with good products and I am satisfied with the unit as a whole and will probably buy another. ... show more
