  • Perfect Homelab/SMB Powerhouse – Quiet, Fast, and Incredibly Capable
Set name: N5 MAX(64+128GB)
I picked up the MINISFORUM N5 Pro to act as the backbone of my infrastructure, and it has absolutely exceeded my expectations. Setup & Build Quality: The physical design of this unit is excellent. Getting inside the chassis for the initial setup was a breeze, and accessing the internal components is incredibly straightforward. I appreciated how easy it was to drop an additional NVMe drive into the computer bay before getting started. I populated the 5 main bays with 16TB NAS hard drives, and the hardware handled it flawlessly. Performance & Software: This thing is an absolute beast. I hooked up a monitor just for the initial Proxmox installation, and since then, it’s been running entirely headless and out of the way 24/7. The AMD Ryzen AI Max+ processor doesn't skip a beat, handling everything I throw at it with ease while staying incredibly stable. Networking: The networking capabilities are stellar. The 10GbE port is blazing fast and saturates my network exactly as it should. It also features a 5GbE NIC which I don't even have connected yet, but it’s fantastic to have that extra headroom for future network isolation or expansion. If you are looking for a compact and high-performance desktop NAS for a serious homelab or SMB environment, this is it. Highly recommended! ... show more

  • More than a NAS! It's Simple Enough, Versatile, Powerfull, and Beautifully Designed.
Set name: N5 MAX(64+128GB)
Ready for a rant-review? This is a long one because I am so excited about how and what this thing turned out to be! I understand this may seem pricey for a NAS machine, but I'm writing to explain my reasoning for a five-star review. This thing is an absolute beast - I'd previously been using a Laptop with a 14'' screen and i7-1355u and 64GB DDR5 5200MT/s with a variety of Thunderbolt docking stations and USB-C hubs to accomplish my day-to-day. I don't use a laptop much for mobility, so I wanted to get a desktop that could support my large storage needs for Linux ISOs and still have the chops to handle some decent gaming and productivity tasks. Boy, does this thing fit the bill. I'm a developer, so I wanted to have the ability to use AI and learn to base things off the NPU - check, I wanted a powerful graphics card that could work for both games and productivity/AI/crunching numbers :P - check. I wanted RAM out the wazoo - this thing came with not just 96GB of DDR5, but Kingston ECC at 5600MT/s SODIMM. INCLUDED! The SSD was only 128, but I have been a Samsung boy since the advent of M.2 NVMe, so I pulled that out and put my 970 EVO Plus 1TB, 980 PRO 500GB, and 990 EVO Plus 500GB in. Still, it ALSO comes with a slot-in card for enterprise storage in the form of 3 PCI-Express M.2 slots converted to U.2 (via an adapter) - and this is all just the SSD/NVMe connectivity. This doesn't even touch the 5x3.5'' hard drive slots that you can add additional storage to if you need. I chose Toshiba's N300 16TB with 500MB Cache, and these things haul ass with peak burst R/W speeds of 281MB/s. I'm currently dual-booting Linux and Windows on the two 500GB drives, and using the 1TB drive as a shared cache/scratch drive for files I want consistently between them. I will say, it's definitely set up to be a NAS. Quiet as hell - Don't know how because it boosts so high, and designed with outer connectivity to be either headless or "mostly headless" - but I have just 1 USB-C hub that breaks out into 2 Alt DP ports and 3 USB4 ports, and then HDMI for my main 27'' Monitor that runs QHD (1440p) at 100hz. I'm considering buying their two 15.6'' 2K QHD displays to replace the 14'' 1200p displays I currently have, which also support touch. They just keep coming with the hits. If you couldn't easily break out USB4 (Type-C) into hubs that support video and high speeds (Thunderbolt 4), I'd say this thing is a little short on connectivity, but USB4 is amazing, and 1 port can literally do it all! Add the dual Ethernet 10 and 5 gbit ports with link aggregation and it's insane....but my network is only 2.5gbps wide - I've opted for a TP-Link WiFi 7 adapter and am trying out WiFi 7 MLO on it, and it's blazing fast too - but still limited to the good old ISP that wants an arm and a leg for higher speeds. I'm perfectly content paying 65 USD a month for my 2Gbps plan; I mean, I get 2.2 to 2.3 Gbps anyway, so it's hard to complain about the value there. I was considering using one of the slots to try an Intel wireless WiFi7 card, but opted for the SSDs - plus there aren't any antennas because this isn't a laptop, so this one suits me better as it has an extension USB with an articulating antenna on the USB dongle (the WiFi 7 dongle that is) Overall, the only port I think I miss on this thing (which prompted me to purchase an iFi Go Link Max DAC - and soon to be some banging speakers) is the 3.5mm headphone jack. Everyone seems to hate 3.5mm jacks these days, but there are sub-$10 cables with microphone and headphone ports to solve this, too! USB4 is KING! There's plenty of connectivity for this to be a full-on desktop daily driver/gaming machine if you're not expecting to be playing Triple-A games at all ultra settings - it is Zen 5 after all, with Radeon 890M - nothing to scoff at in the least. Still, obviously, you're not paying 5 grand for a gaming PC either. It's simply an astounding machine, and did I mention how beautiful it is to the eye? Like a Matte Carbon Black - I swear this thing was designed to be what those old shuttle PC's could have, had anyone had taste back in those days. No handle, but I don't think you should be moving a NAS anyway. I think adding a strap system with velcro straps and a handle-type thing, just in case you wanna take it to a LAN or something, so you can move it around for any reason, and feel secure. I'm sure there's something out there third-party that exists to fit that bill, but I'm not moving mine...so it's just a thought. I haven't had any issues with stability, uptime, or difficulty removing the computer module slot. It's durable and rock-solid design means that two screws hold the computer module in (not hidden screws underneath rubber grommets, but just two normal P2 screws) - and out she comes. Take off three more regular screws, and the CPU fan moves aside so you can access EVERYTHING you'd want to play with... It has totally changed my experience on the computer - I have a 27'' 1440p 100hz monitor, two side 14'' 1200p monitors (soon to replace with those minisforum 15.6'' 2K I THINK!!!) and a nice mechanical keyboard (IQUNIX MQ80) and a Logitech G9x (old but the best mouse you'll ever have - I have 4 total and have repaired them over the 20 years I've been using them all!) There's the one USB-C dual-monitor supporting USB-C hub in the back USB4-C port, breaking out to 2 monitors up to 4K@60, and the HDMI port for 4K@60 for my main monitor, and another 8 ports of varying sorts on the hub on my desk, from PD3.0 to 5Gbps and 10Gbps Type-A and Type-C. All this, and it just occupies the one USB4 Type-C port on the back and the HDMI port. You still have Type-A ports, an OcuLink, and a Kensington Lock to keep that thing bolted down. The front plate hides the drive bays quite smoothly, but comes off via magnets, which are no slouch and position it perfectly every time. My only gripe is that the drives aren't hot-swappable, but that's not a big issue for me, as I'm not buying WD Blues, and the N300's failure is in the several million hours MTTF with 180TB/year ratings. Overall, whether you try their MiniCloud OS, or are a avid Linux users who can handle self-hosting or Unraid, Proxmox, etc - or even just looking for a great little PC that's nice to look at, quiet, and actually HAS room to put 3.5'' drives in (something I've noticed is not all that common anymore after M.2 took over. Seriously, try finding something other than a NAS box, the Meshify, or the Fractal Node that is easy on the eyes for multi-drive storage. I have a Meshify 2, and that thing has 12 drives packed into it. So in summary.... This is about as good as it gets, and it will only get better when you figure out all the things YOU can do with it, rather than what I am doing with it! It's an exciting journey to set up and find your partnership with it. The processor is the cream of the crop, the RAM is Kingston ECC in the N5 Pro - although their Memory Compatibility Matrix might be a good thing to look at if you buy it bare bones. Other than needing either a dongle for headphones you can get for 8 bucks on Amazon, or a Webcam and a DAC, the rest falls beautifully into place. The price may seem high, but when you remember you're getting 2x48GB DDR5 ECC 5600 MT/s alone, that's like $1,000 worth of memory. I think I'm in love. ... show more

  • Excellent compact NAS with powerful performance
Set name: N5 Air(0+64GB)
The MINISFORUM N5 Air 5-Bay Desktop NAS exceeded my expectations in both performance and expandability. The AMD Ryzen 7 255 processor with 8 cores and 16 threads handles demanding workloads very smoothly, including virtualization, Docker containers, Plex/Emby media streaming, and high-speed network storage. The Radeon 780M graphics also help significantly with 4K video transcoding. The build quality feels solid and modern, and the 5-bay design provides plenty of room for HDDs and SSDs. I also really appreciated the connectivity options, especially the 10GbE networking, PCIe expansion, and USB4 support. It’s perfect for a homelab setup, backups, media servers, or even small business use. Another major advantage is the support for up to 96GB DDR5 RAM and compatibility with operating systems like TrueNAS, Unraid, and Linux. The hardware feels future-proof and highly customizable. ... show more

  • It's described as having RAM, you have to pay $300 plus dollars for it.
Set name: N5 Air(0+64GB)
It clearly says in the description it comes with RAM. It didn't run so I poked around and discovered it does NOT in fact come with RAM, but you can buy it for an addition 300 some odd dollars. Get a QNAP! Great products. Reliable and great support. I bought this because it has more power. QNAP's have plenty of power but I'm a power user and like to play around. ... show more

  • Minisforum N5 Air 5 bay NAS
Set name: N5 Air(0+64GB)
Here's what I love about this Minisforum N5 Air 5 bay NAS. It's quite attractive, solidly made, it has plenty of ventilation, but what really sells me on this device is that it essentially gives you room or 5 HDDs and three additional M.2 drives. In addition it has a pcie slot so for example you can put a tv capture card in it and with the drive space you have a heck of a nice dvr. In addition it has the ability to output 8k video, and comes with oculink built in. It's a tiny beast of capability in small form factor. One of the best things about this device is that you're not tied into specific hardware requirements like some of the big name NAS companies. In short it's kind of hard to go wrong selecting this for your NAS selection ... show more

  • A high-end product, weigh your needs against the budget
Set name: N5 Pro(16+128GB)
A very nicely built and understandably hefty box for its size. Excellent networking and USB port selection and an expansion bay. Currently testing, but already have to say this much. It is a high-end, future proofed product, yet all the upgrades and expansions will come at some serious price, so consider what you will use it for and your budget. Example, look up how much a U.2 15TB SSD costs. I ditched MinisOS from the start, because both the desktop software and app insist on updating itself immediately during the setup. I prefer to know and understand what updates are being delivered, first. Also, the app is being distributed via the app store, so why direct update without an app store? Fortunately, the product supports 3rd party OS, so I am testing a Proxmox setup with a virtualized TrueNAS Scale. Unraid had its appeal due to mixed disk sizes, but that is about it. Unraid is also not free. ... show more

  • Working great with Windows 11 Home as a Plex server
Set name: N5 Air(0+64GB)
I purchased the N5 Air to replace one of my aging Plex servers. The N5 Air manual was very thorough. Showing and explaining how to install and remove parts etc. I first installed two 32GB DDR5 modules, that I repurposed from two of my Terramaster F6-424 NAS systems. Way more memory than I need, but I bought those modules last year for $98 each. And now they cost over $400. So, I'm not about to purchase two 16GB modules at the current prices, unless absolutely necessary. I had no issues with the Windows 11 Home installation from a USB drive created with the Windows USB media creation tool. And Minisforum had all the drivers and documentation needed on their website I first installed a 2TB Samsung 990 pro, in the faster NVMe slot. Which is a PCIe Gen 4x2 slot. As expected, I got reduced read/write speeds of around 3900MB/s. I wanted to use the 990 to its full potential. So, I purchased an M.2 NVME to PCIe 4.0 x4 Adapter. To install in the PCIe x16 expansion slot(Which actually has PCIe 4.0 x4 speeds). Now I am getting much closer to the speeds the 990 pro is capable of. Using CrystalDiskMark, with a 64GiB sample, I am getting 7123MB/s read speeds. And 6903MB/s write speeds from my 2TB Samsung 990 Pro. I still plan to populate the one PCIe Gen 4x2 slot and the two PCIe Gen 4x1 slots with lower speed NVMe Drives (990 EVO models). When transferring data to/from the N5 Air, I had no problem getting 9.4Gb/s speeds from the 10GbE port. And 4.7 Gb/s speeds from 5 GbE port. These two, built-in, high-speed ports was one of the reasons I decided to go with the N5 Air. Since my old system had a 10 GbE add on card. And I was already used the fast transfer rates that I get from my home LAN, with a 10 GbE backbone. If I had any complaint, it would be that the fans were louder than I would like. But, I just made adjustments to the fan settings in the BiOS. And now the fans are much, much quieter. The fans can only be adjusted in the BiOS. There is no access to the fan settings from any Windows software that I saw. But, the BiOS had all the settings I needed to make adjustements. The N5 Air can sip power when needed, like around 13 watts or so with just the 990 pro installed. And can ramp up when it needs to as well. With the CPU in major use during benchmarking, I only saw power usage up into the 50 to 60 watt range. But, in my use as a plex server I would never see the CPU work that hard. In normal use I saw the power use typically fluctuate between the mid 20 and mid 30 watt range. The lower fan speed settings also made a difference in having lower power usage. Once I add the other NVMe drives and platter hard drives, power use will, of course, increase. But I am pleased with baseline power usage of the system. And also, how powerful it can be, if needed. It will be a huge improvement over the 2018, 8th gen core i5 I system I currently use in that Plex setup. So, so far, I am very pleased with the N5 Air. Only time will tell how it will work in the long term. So, I hope it will continue to chug along, like my old 2018 system did. ... show more

  • Honest review - the bad & the GOOD
Set name: N5 MAX(64+128GB)
First the bad, my unit arrived DOA 😞 Now all the good! Andy @Minisforum was outstanding. He was informative, communicative and thoroughly professional. It took a few days but he was.able to have me return the first unit and shipped a new unit to me when they received the non-functioning one. The new unit, N5 Pro, is a beast!! Its build quality is outstanding with metal case. It does have some cheap feeling drive caddies but I (fingers crossed) won’t be using too often 😉 it booted right away and, though it comes with additional U.2 adapter, I used traditional NVMEs. Five HDDs, enterprise/NAS grade. Upgrade from my Synology 923+ (boo on their recent changes—the reason I went with Minisforum versus another Synology in the first place). I’m runnning Proxmox with ZFS fast pool and bulk pools and the system screams!! It’s also running core AI workflows for me. I need to find more things for it to do. ‘Cause it’s a beast!! I have no issues with it and appreciate the 10GbE NIC built in. My core backbone is 10GbE. I had to add a board for the old Synology which is now retiring to a family member’s house. I can’t say enough great things about Minisforum. Andy there took a bad BAD experience and had me try one more time. So glad, I did. I highly recommend this system and am thankful for the trust they’ve earned in getting and KEEPING customers! Shout out to the entire N5 Pro team!! ... show more
