  • Works well, clear crisp images, zoom level seems consistent with my full size student microscope
Color: Black
Three controls: light on/off button, zoom level ring, and focus ring. Comes with 1x AAA battery for the light, but if you have enough light on your subject you can leave the light off. If you can, put your subject on a flat matte white surface or in a high contrasting solid color, and flatten your subject out. You can use thin glass, or maybe the flat plastic from product packaging, but you can also make do with clear tape or clear plastic bag. But if it is small enough to fit under the microscope you could also just try it direct, the microscope has a little clear plastic shield so wind won't move the subject around as much. The zoom level seems consistent with the zoom possible on my full size student/hobby microscope (the kind where you can swap the objective lens and subjective lens out on top of moving the objective lens in/out, and the light is old school reflecting mirror used with external lighting). Not necessarily the same zoom range, but the pocket microscope zoom level min/max seem to have similar image to the same setting on the full size microscope. I was able to clearly make out the compound structure of a sugar ant's eye (the ant's body is already a tiny <2mm long), and the ant's head looked almost as big as my thumb about 2" from my eye. I was definitely skeptical of the lens quality and was expecting it to be fuzzier this tight in, but I'm also not very informed about lens science and engineering. The pocket microscope body is cheaper plastic, but I think it will last a long time with careful handling. The only moving parts outside are the 3 controls. It comes with a soft carry microfiber bag, and the inside of the bag can probably be kept clean enough to wipe smudges or dust off the microscope lens, but I'd try to store the microscope in a harder case if possible. Not sure what would fit it without adding wasted empty space though, but something about the size of or a bit smaller than an empty toilet paper roll, hair curler roller, or the hand part of a bicycle handlebar. It's probably okay to keep in a clothes pocket without other hard objects though, and it's cheap enough to replace. This comes with a simple mount that spring clips to your phone. This is mainly useful for taking video or photos, or using other tools to send the digitized image to another computer/bigger screen; it's probably way easier to see details looking directly with eyes. The mount attaches to the microscope with a little clip/snap. The little clips are small enough that it takes a little practice to get it to go in, and I wouldn't be surprised if it breaks within a few attach/detach, but it's a nice little addon. The microscope dials are tiny though, so it's a little tricky to adjust while the microscope is attached to the clip. With two hands, I'd be careful and hold the phone between index and middle finger and microscope with thumb and ring+pinkie fingers of one hand, while adjusting the microscope with the 2nd hand. Or maybe just adjust the microscope before attaching to the clip, so at least you'd only need to adjust the focus ring instead of both the zoom and the focus ring. This is listed as a microscope for kids, but it's good enough to be for anyone with curiosity or need for a way to look at tiny detail where magnifying glasses aren't enough. ... show more

  • Takes a While to Adjust Because It Does Not Secure Well to Phone
Color: Yellow
Aligning the lens of the microscope to the lens of the phone is a little bit challenging. Once aligned, if you move either the phone or the microscope it is likely to need adjustment once again because the lenses must be aligned to a very high degree to get a proper picture. I was able to get a few proper pictures of some metallic surfaces that I wanted to capture (corrosion in particular), but it took a large amount of time to get it set up properly. The first issue is that the sample needs to be aligned with the lens, which can be very difficult but is no fault of this device. It is simply difficult to have fine movements without the advantage of having an adjustable stage like that of a microscope. It is complicated by needing to reverse the movement desired since to move up in the picture, you move the object down, and the same for left and right - it is like it is a reflection of the true image. The illumination is very good and the focusing capability is pretty good too, offering a decent image. As I said, it is really the alignment of the camera to the lens and maintaining that alignment which is the biggest difficulty and what could be solved through some type of design change. I imagine that any improving design change would likely mean an increase in cost since I believe that one of the best solutions is to have a larger platform for the phone. I have had pocket microscopes that were on the expensive side, which may have given a better image but did not offer the capability of using your phone to capture the image. Further, this illuminating one makes it considerably easier to set up! My pocket microscope uses a reflector that is part of the bottom. It can be very frustrating to use the reflector type of microscope - this takes that frustration out of it. I really like the microscope part of this, just not the phone mount. ... show more

  • Simple and Great for Kids. Great Starter Assortment. No Cell Phone App Required.
Color: Yellow
This kit comes with the microscope, battery, pouch. cell phone adapter and starter slide set. Overall very well put together and as I indicated in the headline is great for curious kids. First things first, the battery supplied is a 'heavy duty' variety which I immediately replaced with a AAA alkaline. HD batteries have a bad reputation for leaking acid when they go flat. To use simply install a battery and press the button on the top. When powered on the unit will immediately light up letting the user know it's ready (that's really all the power is for, a little LED light that illuminates the subject). The button can be pressed again to select a little higher intensity light. The base of this unit must be rested directly against whatever is being looked at. If the unit is pulled away it will not focus. But if the base is put directly on top it works fine. To view simply look into the top of the microscope - yes, it's that easy. The focus and zoom functions work as advertised. Originally I half way expected an app to be required on my phone to use - that is NOT the case. The supplied adapter clips to your cell phone over the cell phone's camera. Once the adapter is correctly positioned over the phone's camera lens the microscope can be attached to the clip. This effectively turns the cell phone's camera into an extension of the microscope. I believe this would be easiest to use if the cell phone doesn't have a case installed. Mine has an Otterbox and it gets in the way a little. I found the overall combination, of the cell phone and microscope, a little clumsy to use but it may just take a little practice. A great way to encourage kids to explore their environment. ... show more

  • Takes some practice to use
Color: Blue
The idea of this mini microscope is great, I have a very curious 7 year old who is very much into science. He already has a regular microscope, so I thought this one would be a great stocking stuffer. It's super light and has two separate adjustment dials, one for zoom and one for focus. It zooms in quite a bit, and the light is bright enough to illuminate the specimen even on top of a dark surface. But because it is handheld, he had a difficult time holding the microscope still while adjusting focus. I had my own difficulties trying to use it and hold the microscope still over a specimen, so it's not only a problem with his age group and requires a good deal of handheld coordination. The microscope came with several different specimens as well as a couple blank slides, although I'm not sure how you would be expected to prepare the slides since mine did not come with any kind of cover plate, which means whatever you look at might get on the lens. The phone clip was actually the most useful piece... I found it easier to adjust focus while using it with my phone than using the microscope with my naked eye, and it allowed me to take good clear pictures of the specimens. My son doesn't have his own phone and isn't super comfortable with using mine, so this didn't help him as much as it did me. Overall, this is a great little tool for a budding scientist, but it does require a good bit of coordination with both hands, so it might be better for older age groups. Still fun for younger kids, but might be frustrating to some. ... show more

  • Hugely inflated price if you aren’t in a hurry.
This review is for the “spectrum optical instruments” Pocket Microscope for Kids,60X - 120X Portable Microscope for Kids. I’m sure most will understand why the quotes if you read through to the end. I think I am being generous and giving it 3 stars because it is what it claims to be and does work well enough. For the review, I think it’s relevant that I include that the phone I used in testing is an iPhone 15 Pro Max with a Phone Rebel Gen-5 case. For the little plastic spring clip to hold it to your phone, it surprised me by working without me having to remove my case, even tho my case does have a slightly raised ring around the cameras. Overall my case is fairly thin and I wouldn’t expect it to work with the larger cases on the most protective end of the spectrum. It does require a little bit of fiddling to get it lined up with the correct camera but once you get it lined up, it does a fair job of holding it in place as long as you don’t move it around while adjusting the microscope settings. With a very small amount of practice it is easy to do. Update: after more use, with how the clip attaches to the eye piece of the microscope, it pops off far too easily as it has already fallen off multiple times during my usage in the short time since the original review. The microscope does work well and is not difficult to adjust to be able to see things under the various levels of magnification. Now for the reason that I’m knocking off 2 stars. This microscope is extremely similar, if not identical to the numerous ones available directly from the country where this is made. It can be had from 10% to 20% of the cost if you just want the microscope and can wait a couple of weeks for delivery. If you want 12 specimen slides, add $2-$3 and you’ll even get the bee leg and butterfly wing among others. Some of those mentioned come with what looks like it would be a more sturdy phone mount too. All in all, this one has similar performance as ones I’ve had for quite a few years now and the same level of quality. The biggest upgrade to me is that this and ones referenced above all use a much more common single AAA battery instead of button cells like my multiple older ones do for their light. If they knocked 20%-30% off the price then I think it would be a much more reasonable price and still leave them some room for their piece from having their name put on the side since they should get a better deal than numbers I mentioned above since they would likely be ordering them in bulk. ... show more

Color: Purple
This microscope is perfect for exploring the details of nature. The camera mount for the phone is helpful for adjusting and seeing through the scope. Everything is easy to use on this so everyone of all Aggie’s can use it.

  • Surprisingly Powerful and Fun for All Ages!
Color: Yellow
I bought the EasyMicro LED Lighted Pocket Microscope (Yellow) on a whim for my kids—and ended up loving it myself. This little gadget is impressively powerful for its size, with crisp magnification between 60x and 120x. The built-in LED light makes a huge difference, especially in low-light situations, and really brings out detail in everything from fabric fibers to bugs to grains of sand. The yellow color makes it easy to find in a crowded drawer or bag, and it's small enough to carry on hikes or nature walks. Adjusting the zoom and focus takes a little practice, but once you get the hang of it, it's super intuitive. Perfect for curious minds of any age. Highly recommend for parents, teachers, or anyone who loves seeing the world up close. • Handy pocket microscope - lens clip really works well Handy pocket microscope - lens clip really works well
Color: Blue
I'm kind of a microscope nerd - I have several, and am even building a 3D printed lab-grade one. Even though I already have a mini microscope that I like to take along camping, I ordered this because of the camera clip for the phone. Many times I've struggled trying to align my phone camera to my pocket scope, so this seemed like a great idea. Overall, I'm pretty impressed with this. Of course, as a miniature scope, the optics aren't terrific (I mean, good microscope lenses cost >$300 just for the lens), but it's certainly adequate for its magnification range. It also has independent focus and zoom knobs (some cheap mini scopes only have a single adjustment, so you can only focus at very specific magnifications). Best of all though, I found that the clip was easy to use and made photographing the subject so much easier. I had to fiddle with my phone to keep it from switching cameras (a peril of multi-lens systems), but once I figured that out, it was easy to align the clip, and it attached securely to the scope. I was able to get a clear, full-frame image without a lot of fuss. Anyway, I think this is a great little scope for what it is, and it's replaced my old mini-scope in my hiking pack. ... show more
