  • A Must Have for New Parents! The search ends here.
Background: My wife and I are first time parent of a (now 4-month-old) baby boy. Up until recently we have been using a Vtech video monitor in combination with a separate Vtech audio monitor. My theory was to have a separate audio monitor because we ‘only’ want to turn on the video monitor when we hear noises or want to see what is happening. To-date this has been a great way to monitor, however, we did notice that the Vtech took a while to connect to each time we opened the app, and the camera had ZERO ability to monitor vitals. Sometimes we could see him on camera but we could not see his breathing which was a little disconcerting at times. The bottom line is we decided we wanted a system that would monitor vitals and sleeping, all of which the Miku camera does without any additional attachments. The other options required strapping monitoring devices on our son, which we didn’t want to do. Pro’s of Miku: Extremely professional and clean packaging. Very easy to setup and easy to follow instructions. Ultra-modern looking, Apple like… Easy to use app. Being able to see your baby is breathing “at a glace” makes this system worth it’s weight in gold – absolutely priceless! In our case, we can click on the app at any time to check on our boy for piece of mind, and especially if we hear a noise or peep coming from his room. Occasionally we will just leave the app open on our phones and continue to monitor him during the first part of his sleeping. We love how the system is able to alert us when he has moved, awake, or sleeping. It’s like a video nanny watching over him which is so awesome. Another pro is the ability to review his sleep analytics night after night. So far this looks to be rather accurate and another huge benefit we didn’t have with our basic camera. If the ability to monitor vitals and sleep patterns is important to you, this is the camera you want, period. Con’s of Miku: No zoom capability. Average resolution at best. Instructions ask you to mount the camera incredibly low as compared to where you can mount other camera systems with zoom. No movement availability, meaning you cannot remotely change camera angles (however, this probably would contradict the benefits of the vital monitoring if your camera wasn’t always pointed perfectly at the crib). The app reports “movement” activity every few minutes under “activity”, which is confusing to us. We can check many of the “movement” reports and we don’t see him moving. Perhaps this is part of the vital monitoring, but I believe Miku needs to make an update to this portion – it’s confusing more than helpful. Final notes: Even if your intention if to have a moveable and zooming camera at some point when your child is older, this is the ONLY way to go for the first year or two of their life. The piece of mind you get knowing that you baby is healthy, breathing well, and sleeping soundly makes this investment an absolute must-have for all new parents. ... show more

  • Horrible connectivity Issues, unusable monitor and non-responsive customer support
TLDR; Interesting technology but horrible implementation with limited customer support We bought this Miku a few months before the birth of our child to use as a "Smart Baby Monitor" given all the touted features of a smart monitor + advanced breathing detection, great reviews and a nice $100 off deal. Fast forward, our child was born last week and I I immediately set it up. The Miku seemed to work fine out of the box for the first few days. The breathing monitor seemed like a cool feature, but honestly wasn't very consistent (possibly because we use it with a Snoo smart crib that moves so it constantly detects motion). Other than that, the motion detection feature seemed to lag a bit but was manageable. Then about 7 days in, the nightmare began. I started getting alerts that the monitor was going offline. I would check the app, and couldn't connect to the monitor to watch the stream. I turned if off and on again, and it seemed to connect back, but the stream became very laggy. Video would cut in and out and it just wouldn't hold a proper stream. I reached out to tech support and got a response saying they sent a signal to my Miku to get it off standby and asked that I switch the stream to "Standard" quality vs "High Quality". Followed those instructions and stream + connectivity seemed to get worse. (Also, what's the point of buying an HD camera if you're going to use Standard Quality?). I then began to wonder if it was my Wifi network (I'm running a 802.11ac MU-MIMO Router at 2.4Ghz & 5Ghz with 30+ devices connected without a problem). The Miku is placed a little bit further than my other devices, but it's only about 75 feet away. I have 3 other connected devices that don't seem to have issues connecting at that range, and I use my iPhone and iPad nearby daily (it's next to our bed). Speedtests in that area are reading 200+Mbps Up and Down so I was certain it's not an issue with my router or internet. That said, I went ahead and purchased a MU-MIMO extender to boost the range of my router to the room. With the extender, the Miku has a 150+Mbps Link Rate, but yet, I still CANNOT GET A WORKING STREAM OR CONNECTION. I'm beyond frustrated with this useless monitor. It can't seem to do something a basic $40 wireless camera can do to hold a consistent stream. Every time I connect, it just hangs on "connecting". I've reached back to customer support a number of times now and have gotten zero response. Every time I've called, I keep getting sent to voicemail. I'm now 3 days without a working baby monitor and have resorted to using a cheap audio monitor as a backup. I've spent 2 days trying to fix and diagnose this issue - very limited time I have while we deal with a newborn. There is NO WAY I can trust this device to be a reliable baby monitor. I'm also unfortunately just past the return period on Amazon - so much for buying something early on a good deal. I really wish I had bought the Nanit Plus. One more thing, the temperature readings on the monitor also seems to be consistent 2-4F higher than the actual room temperature. Not sure if it's picking up extra heat from the monitor itself. I have a thermostat about 15 feet away to compare that. It's not critical, but temperature is quite important since our baby is a bit under-weight. ... show more
