  • Pretty Impressive
Style: CM 5310 Silence Color: Tayberry Red
I did a ton of research into "semi-automatic" and "fully automatic" coffee machines before finally deciding on this Miele. Very glad I opted for fully automatic, as it turns out there is very little that is actually automatic about semi-automatic machines. This machine does it all at the touch of a button, once you fill the water and bean reservoirs (and place the pipette in some milk, if desired). In terms of convenience and flexibility, it cannot be beat. You can make a wide variety of espresso-style beverages (and even plain coffee), and each is customizable in terms of total liquid volume, amount of coffee, and water temperature. Your settings are retained in memory. You can also adjust the grind size to one of six different settings. We usually use the smallest or second-smallest grind as we prefer fine grinds for pour-over as well (seems like you get a bit more bang for your unit volume of whole beans). You can even use pre-ground coffee in a separate compartment, although that kind of defeats the purpose of having a built-in grinder. With this machine, my wife prefers the Americano, while I usually make myself a Latte Machiatto and stir in a little sugar before drinking. The instructions say never to use any milk other than whole cow milk; I tried mac nut milk one time and it tasted too toasted, almost like burnt marzipan. So I stick with whole milk and the dairy aspect is as good as -- if not better than -- any store-bought latte. The beverages come out extremely hot. I experimented with different temperature settings (mostly trying to optimize flavor), and even the lowest setting comes out pretty piping hot. The machine comes with some factory test coffee still in it -- you will want to discard it and make (and dump) several of your own beverages before trying to drink (the nearly black factory coffee is extremely roasted and tastes/smells basically like charcoal). We bought this machine originally to use a five pound bag of high quality, lightly roasted unground beans that were sent us by mistake (we usually order ground coffee). It is very important to use high-quality beans (meaning on the dry side, and not oily). Now that we have had some time to compare the same exact coffee made using ground pour-over (our long-time method) versus whole bean using this machine, it turns out that pour-over just tastes better. The flavor is more complex and robust -- probably because the water passes very slowly through the ground coffee (and cools a bit in the process), whereas this machine passes extremely hot water quickly through a "puck" that it creates after grinding whole beans. The entire process takes maybe a minute (and is rather loud -- the "Silence" part of the machine's name is true only when it is not running). The bean and water reservoirs are not especially large, so you will need to refill them pretty frequently (particularly the water reservoir -- which you would want to replace daily anyway). The machine does a lot of self-cleaning maintenance which also uses some water, so you will need to empty the puck and water drainage compartments pretty often as well. It can be a bit messy/sloppy, depending on your hand balance. I removed the brew unit one time and rinsed it without prompting (mostly just curious what it looked like and whether it would be difficult -- it wasn't). After nearly two months of regular use, we have not yet needed to use any special cleaning or descaling tablets (a few are included in the box). I use Brita filtered water to fill the reservoir, not tap water. In short, if convenience and flexibility are your top priorities, and you have non-oily whole beans handy, this machine should be on your short list of potential automatic coffee machines. But if you want optimal flavor from your ground coffee (particularly lighter roasts), pour-over is still a better way to go. ... show more

  • Excellent coffee, easy to use and maintain
Style: CM 5510 Silence Color: AluSilver Metallic Finish
Love this machine! Yes, it is quite pricey, but you definitely get value for money. Workhorse for every day, but when wanted makes an excellent cappuccino or latte. Easy to maintain, both every day and descaling. The one wish I’d have for it is for it to use a scale, rather than a count to tell me when to empty the drip pan. Other than that it is perfect for me and my family ... show more

  • An excellent machine overall - best for single households
Style: CM 5300 Color: Obsidian Black
Overall I'm very pleased with my 5300. Let's look at the pros and cons: Pros: Makes excellent drinks - I particularly like cappuccinos and this machine can consistently churn out excellent ones. Thoughtfully designed - there are many nice touches - from the way the machine automatically requests to wash the milk pipework after you make a milk drink, to the way it walks you through step by step when cleaning is required. Cons: The water reservoir on the 5300 is relatively small, which means you will be refilling it frequently. Because it is frequently rinsing itself (helping with maintenance) it uses more water than you might expect. That and the fact that it doesn't have user profiles means that this might not be a good choice if you have more than one coffee drinker in the household (I'm single, so it's been fine for me, but I could see that it could be annoying with more people using the machine). Consider stepping up to the 6150 or 6350 if this will be used by multiple people. Although it doesn't have user profiles, you can customize the drinks and it will save your adjustments. You just can't customize them for different people. Also, it doesn't have a touch screen, which seems like a bit of a throw back in this day and age. Not an issue for me, but may be frustrating for some users. Other Info: Not a pro or con, but it's worth checking your water hardness when you set this machine up. The machine arrives from the factory assuming you have very hard water (meaning it will ask to descale more frequently). That's probably the right default choice, but I was surprised when it asked to descale after less than a month of use. I got a test kit and confirmed that I have soft water so I changed that setting and I expect I won't have to descale now for quite some time. This machine doesn't come with a milk carafe. You can just dunk the milk pipework into a bottle of milk (or glass) but I ended up purchasing the Míele glass carafe from their website for $50 to have a nicer milk experience. (The top of the line 6350 comes with a fancy insulated stainless steel milk carafe - something to consider when choosing which model to get). Like all super-automatic machines, it requires more maintenance than standard coffee makers. I came from a Nespresso, so that was a bit of a surprise. Per the owner's manual recommendation, I clean the milk pipework weekly (using the Míele milk cleaning tablets - you can buy on Amazon), and rinse the brew unit and coffee dispense unit weekly as well. I also run the drip try and grounds collector through my dishwasher weekly as well. Again, not a big deal, but if this is your first super-automatic it may be a surprise. Be sure to avoid using flavored or oily beans as they can damage the machine. I use Lavazza espresso roast from Costco and have gotten good results. Overall, I'm very pleased with this purchase. This would be 5 stars except for the relatively small water reservoir - something you can fix by going for either the 6150 or 6350 models. ... show more

  • Best Superautomatic for the price range available as of 2022 if you prefer coffee drinks
Style: CM 5510 Silence Color: AluSilver Metallic Finish
I prefer stronger Milk and Americano drinks and my wife prefers weaker Americano drinks. I say this because this context matters to my following review. I have spent hours researching and testing various machines and I will say there is no "perfect" one that I have found. I tried many of the superautomattics with the milk drink capability such as the SMEG, Jura, D6 & E6, the Phillips 3200, Seaco Xelsis , and the Miele CM6350 (refurb that dies a week later) and this Miele CM5510 Quiet. First, both my wife and I both prefer the flavor of the Miele's. The same beans (same bag) simply taste better. Yes this is subjective but the note vs Jura E6 is significantly different in that the Jura (including some of the office models I have tried) is much more acidic. Both the Jura and Miele's output very hot coffees and fairly hot milk. The milk froth and micro-bubbles are hot and essentially the same. Second, the Miele's are truly "super automatics" where you press one button and you get a complete milk drink (e.g. Macchiato) . Mid-line Jura's require you to manually flip a switch to start and stop the milk. Additionally you must then manually clean the milk pipes. Therefore are they truly super automatics? No. If you want a true automatic then you need to spend $1000 more. Third, these 2 Miele's largely self-clean themselves (both coffee spigots, milk spigots and milk tubing) each day when they auto-shut down. You need only dump the waste water and coffee puck trays every few days (depending on volume of drinks) and then rinse the brew unit every week which takes seconds. The Jura and others require more manual intervention. Lastly, the ability to set "profiles" is much more fine-grained on the Miele's. On the Jura's it is not even a feature. Instead you must chose your coffee choice and then manually change the bean and water quantities on the fly and the settings for every cup. The only work around is to pay another $65 for the bluetooth dongle and app and then select the custom drink config from your phone. On these Miele's you can create profiles (e.g. a strong one for me and a weak one for my wife) the adjusts temperature, bean QTY, amount of water, and other advanced variables such as pre-brewing) . Again, all of this amounts to a single button to get exactly what you want in your drink and then later the machine will clean itself. Net = the machines are not cheap and suffer from a few other issues such as small bean hoppers and water containers but overall, I believe the new CM 5510 Silence is the best that I have found for under $2,000 ... show more

  • Easy to clean, way too low capacity
Style: CM 5510 Silence Color: Rose Gold Pearl Finish
Pros * It is incredibly easy to clean. Everything disassembles beautifully * The milk function is simple and it's rinse function is awesome. I've avoided coffee machines in the past with built in milk due to how hard they are too clean. This machine is the exception: it's just a hose the rinse cleans the inside after use and a quick rinse to clean the outside. * High number of config options let you really tweak to get the best coffee Cons * Portion Size function is fascinating but requires you to make a cup to adjust it which is wasteful * The bean and water capacity is way too small. The machine requires you to empty the waste bin for water after only a few cups * If you don't use the drinks on the display you spend your days having to navigate the menu to find your drink. They should let you choose your quick access drinks * It does milk first for latte... It's definitely more traditional but I usually prefer the other way around * Wish you can apply settings across all drinks and make profiles more intuitive Conclusion I think it's a fine machine but not for what's it's worth. Expected better from Miele. A lot of these deficiencies are not difficult to fix and it's a shame they didn't spend more time refining those parts when others parts are so nice... ... show more

  • Delivers what I want
Style: CM 5310 Silence Color: Tayberry Red
Objective was to get back kitchen space after 30 years of using a commercial coffee grinder the size of a basketball and a coffee maker almost as large. My coffee was perfect. The grinder made a lot of noise and the Bunn coffee maker had to be three steps away. Coffee is only perfect for 15 minutes no matter how you do it. This Miele device grinds quietly and provides one large cup in 3 minutes from button touch to table. I never serve more than two people at once so it works fine. I think I could serve four if I had to. I never use milk so that technology is wasted on me. The machine doesn’t trust you to empty rinse water and grinds. So sometimes I have to fake a procedure. It’s easy. I don’t like so much plastic but it looks good and works very well. I have mineral free water that doesn’t produce scale… so I have yet to see how far the machine will go to demand descaling procedure. I think I can fake that too. I also junked the espresso machine because this thing makes great espresso. What’s more I never hesitate to brew espresso because it’s always ready to go. I use light roast coffee beans that are perfect for regular coffee and espresso. I can say with much experience, if Miele makes something, it does the job as well as it can be done. ... show more

  • Quality Not Worth The Price
Style: CM 5510 Silence Color: AluSilver Metallic Finish
This machine has a number of positives, but when it comes down to it (I) the coffee comes out very weak, even with all of the settings options, and (II) ongoing maintenance is a pain. If you enjoy an espresso or latte, in a small serving size, you will probably enjoy the quality here. If you are an American coffee drinker, this machine will not provide the cup-o-Joe you are looking for. Hot milk and froth options are definitely a boast to my morning coffee routine, but don’t overcome the downsides. Ongoing maintenance is a bit of an annoyance. I’m constantly dumping out the waste water and coffee grounds. Always filling up the small clean water reserve. And need to run maintenance cycles constantly. I have no other automatic coffee makers to compare to, but have to imagine a high end drop coffee maker plus a dedicated espresso machine is the better (and cheaper) way to go. ... show more

  • Amateur machine at professional price
Style: CM 5310 Silence Color: Obsidian Black
We had the Miele CM 5200 and had to replace it after some 8 years and 20,000 cups. This is supposed to be the updated model. The coffee flavor is still great. Yet, everything Miele changed is for the worse. The entire construction is made of more flimsy plastic. The grinder sounds shrill, although the machine calls itself “Silence”. Worst of all, the water tank and the drip tray are smaller, while the machine uses even more water to clean itself. As a result, instead of filling the tank and emptying the tray once a day, I now have to do that 2-3 times a day, basically after every 5 cups. We really liked the predecessor model but this thing is a toy and not for serious coffee drinkers. It is an amateur device at the price of a professional machine. Don’t waste your money! Update: The designer cannot be a coffee drinker. The machine is supposed to be “super automatic”, meaning that it makes espresso, lungo, cappuccino, or latte with the touch of a single button. What is the point of that, if I always have to service the machine as if I was it’s assistant and had nothing else to do? I could buy a barista machine for 1/3 of the price if I wanted to work all the time! Very annoying!!!!!! ... show more

We have had our Miele CM 5300 for 2 months and like it very much. There are some things that make it a project to work the machine, like the water reservoir is small. It would be nice if it had a larger reservoir. It take a bit of time to get all the settings to exactly where you want, but stay with it and you will be happy. The cleaning (descale and other) cycles take some time, but the machine walks you through the processes. We love an afternoon expresso and most days make it a double.
