  • Sounds A-OK. Best for people who need to hear themselves and/or who desire active noise cancelling
Recently ordered 6 different headsets: The Microsoft LX-6000 (this one), Microsoft LX-3000, Logitech H390, Logitech H650E, Sennheiser PC 36, and the Sennheiser SC 660 USB CTR Out of the 5 I've received so far, I'd rate this one in the middle in terms of voice quality. However, if you MUST hear yourself on Skype calls, I'd rate it at the top. Out of the ones above, it's one out of 2 (the Logitech H650E being the other) where you can here yourself without any special software "monitoring" tricks. This is rare feature amongst headsets. I also think it's the best sounding of the lot that has any type of active (circuit driven) noise cancellation. This mic sounds like a high end cellphone, but not quite as a good as a fuller range mic such as the one you'll find in the Sennheiser. It's definitely a bandwidth limited mic, either that or the circuitry itself limits the frequencies. Even the LX-3000 I received (at the same time) had a much fuller and real sounding mic, and lower noise floor. So you do give up something having noise reduction circuitry. There's some sort of noise canceling circuitry which itself is noisy and creates a high noise floor. You can hear this noise whenever someone isn't speaking, and if you had audio engineer's ears you could probably hear it full time. There is some sort of noise gate that will start to cut out background sounds when you're not speaking or breathing audibly. It's not instantaneous and doesn't always work, but it's kinda nice. I think the noise canceling is second only to the Logitech H650, but that particular Logitech sounds like a poor quality cell phone. If you want to make podcasts, YouTubes, and the like, and you want to sound you're using a "real mic" or you want to sound very real like "you're there" I wouldn't recommend this one. You'll sound like you're on a lower end "B" mic. This sounds more like a mid level Skype mic to me. Better for busy offices where voice quality doesn't matter so much (customer service), or for people very close to loud roads or children. Not so good if you need to persuade over the phone (exec or sales). If you need a higher quality mic and more intelligible earbuds, I'd go for the Sennheiser PC 36 or even investigate their higher end offerings such as the SC 660 USB CTR (the latter of which I should receive soon and hope to review shortly). The Sennheiser really sounds surprisingly present and real, moreso than anything else I've tried recently and in the past few years. But as with anything made in China, ymmv as "copies" of anything made in China will occasionally vary from the units you see reviewed here. Chinese manufacturing is the ultimate wild card. All that said, I may just hang onto this pair as my partner likes to be able to hear himself when talking on the phone, the same way old phones work. He wishes the mic sounded as good as the Sennheisers, but that particular feature is a trump card for him. I'll likely use the Sennheier PC36, or the higher end Sennheiser if the mic ends up being as full bandwidth. (keep in mind that in headsets, more money doesn't always mean "better sounding" for some really bizarre reason I don't quite understand!) ... show more

  • Good Value, Good Sound, Uncomfortable
I own a Logitech Wireless Gaming Headset G930 with 7.1 Surround Sound that I've used for over a year that I really, really like. Unfortunately, as the reviews on Amazon and elsewhere document, it developed an issue wherein it no longer charges. (The charge port becomes loose internally, and can only be fixed with a risky soldiering procedure which I did not want to attempt.) So, I needed to find a replacement but I didn't want to pay $100-$250 for another gaming headset, at least not at this time. I chose the LifeChat based on the recommendation of WireCutter's article. I should disclose up front that I primarily use headphones for PC gaming, and I bought these as a stop-gap until I decide on another pair of more expensive gaming headphones. Sound quality: The sound in the headphones is, for a set that only cost $30, outstanding. I was very pleasantly surprised, actually. The microphone was also very adroit at picking up sound and didn't seem to transmit much if any background white noise (I often Skype with an oscillating fan immediately behind me). Cord Length: Yes, this deserves a paragraph of its own. Based on where my PC sits and the size of my desk, cord length is very important. I can't stand products that assume all peripherals only need to reach an as-the-crow-flies length of six feet from the computer. The cord on this produce was long enough to reach my PC and be neatly tucked behind my desk. I always appreciate when products have a longer cord--from gaming controllers to speaker wires to HDMI--because it gives you more versatility. Again, for a cheaper headset it was a very pleasant surprise to find the longer cord. Comfort: This is the only area I can find fault with this product. The ear pieces are not large enough to completely fit over the ear (like most headphones I'm accustomed to using), and over time my top and bottom lobes became sore from the ear pieces pressing them directly into my head. The caveat, as I stated initially, is that I use these for gaming. So after two or three hours this becomes a problem. If you're the type of person who will use them for a ten-to-thirty minute call, they won't be an issue. If you plan on prolonged use without removing them, discomfort over time (2+ hours) can probably be expected, unlike pieces that are completely over-the-ear. Value: These are an outstanding product for the price. I still prefer much more expensive over-the-ear headphones, but you don't compromise much on the sound and build quality for such a low price. There are no cheap external foam parts, etc. For most purposes and most people these will probably be very excellent headphones. ... show more
