  • A Solid Microscope and a Winning Gift
I picked this microscope up for my 11-year-old daughter's birthday, and I'm giving it five stars because it really delivered. It's a solid piece of equipment that got her excited about science, and that's a win in my book. Right out of the box, I was pleased that the main body is metal, not cheap plastic. It gives it some heft and feels like it can stand up to being used by a kid. The optics are surprisingly clear, especially at the lower and mid-range magnifications. We spent the first afternoon looking at the prepared slides that came with it, and seeing the leg of a fly and a bit of an onion skin that close up was genuinely impressive. The light from both the top and bottom is a great feature, making it easy to see all sorts of different samples. The best part for my daughter was the phone holder. Getting it lined up just right takes a little patience, but once you do, she can snap pictures of what she's seeing and show them off. It's a clever addition that connects the classic science tool with her modern tech world. If I had to find something to dislike, it would be that the highest magnification, the 2500X, is pretty difficult to get a sharp image with. It's a bit blurry and dim, but frankly, the views at 400X and 1000X are more than enough to see some incredible detail. For what this is—an introductory microscope for a young student—it hits the mark perfectly. It's well-built, easy to use, and sparked a real interest for my daughter. It was a great purchase. ... show more

  • A Microscope That Works Nicely and Comes with Everything You Need to Get Started
I ordered this for my eldest son to use, because he's outgrown his kid's one and really wanted a more "real one" as he put it. This microscope is a great choice for someone, especially someone younger, to be able to use. My son is only 8 years-old, so while I got it for him, I make sure that either my husband or I sort of help him set up despite him insisting that he can do it alone. Having said that, if you do have a child that's possibly already familiar with microscopes, this shouldn't be too difficult for them to figure out with a bit of help. What I love about this microscope set is that it comes with whatever you need to get started and that it's got what I consider a true microscope look to it with all the pieces and functions you might need it to have. Also, the light is adjustable, which is a great feature. However, I will note that the light isn't as powerful as it could be, and this is definitely not a laboratory-grade microscope. It works pretty well, though, and it's perfect for someone like my son that is super interested in everything science related or even for homeschooling purposes. My son loves using it and even my younger children are interested, and as a mom I love that they're so into observing all sorts of things scientifically and wind up learning in a fun way. Overall, we're very happy with this microscope. ... show more

  • Decent optics but held back by everything else
This microscope has a number of good features that are set back by the flaws in design or execution. To start with there is no way to fasten down the eyepieces. There a ridge with inset rings around it that looks like it could be designed for an O-ring or something similar but none exist. The reason I discovered this is the second issue. The light randomly turns off by itself for no known reason. I had to disconnect the cable (the one provided) to get it to turn on again. I tried instead using a battery bank that I use for high power lights but the light wouldn't turn on at all. When using a third the light came on but would again randomly turn off. Both lights on the unit are unresponsive when this happens. There is no mirror on the microscope so the LED light is the only option to be able to see anything through it. While trying to discover the issue the eyepiece started to slide out but fortunately I caught it before it could fall to the floor. For some reason the picture on the Amazon page shows a pair of each included eyepiece when only one is included. The manual states there is a 2x lens as well but it wasn't included and isn't shown, or referred to, on the Amazon page. When actually using the microscope it does give you a good clear view of the specimen even using the 25x eyepiece and the 100 objective for 2500x magnification it is a pretty clear view. The focus can be made using the dual knob design which works very well at higher magnifications. There is a pretty standard collection of slides provided to get used to the scope. There are also a variety of accessories included but the case you are given to keep all this in is too small for some pieces to fit without bending. Everything has to be stuffed into it however you can get it in. Attempting to rearrange it so that the dropper isn't bent is pointless. The biggest issue is that while they have provided a way to rotate the base of the eyepiece 360 degrees there is no way to tilt the angle you view the eyepiece at. Because of this you need to hunch over it much more than with more modern designs that allow the viewing angle to be more comfortable. I think the optics are pretty good for this grade of microscope and I chalk up the light issues to an issue with mine and I still hope to figure that out. Overall I'd say there are better options available for a similar price but this is a decent value for someone who is starting out. I do think the issues present in this scope could disrupt the learning and enjoyment you'd get from a scope that was better designed which would be unfortunate. ... show more
