  • Works Well With Some (Valuable) Effort
Bought this to help with a radio upgrade in my 2000 Jeep Wrangler. The old one had a cracked mounting tab, and, honestly, never looked that great. This mount, on the other hand, is much better made, fits well, supports the radio well, and looks great! It does require a little effort from the installer, but it is worth it. The opening comes with two cross supports molded in. Those have to be cut out, but they help keep the structure square and stiff until installed. Some of the mounting tabs are for other car models, so those have to be trimmed off as well. Once that prep work is finished, the plate is easily mounted into position and ready for the radio unit. I like the strength of the mount and the radio slid into it perfectly. Everything after that is just routine re-install. And... the wife loved the look of her new radio! Recommended - worth the little bit of effort. ... show more

  • 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo w/ Sony Explod
Over the past six years I have used these types of kits a total of three times to replace radios, but this specific mount by Metra has been the best one of them all. The plastic is thick and not flimsy, which is a good thing. This did make the unused plastic tabs more time consuming to remove, but just be patient and use a pair of lineman pliers and a file and everything will turn out as it should. At one point I also used a hack saw, but only for expedience; the saw was not actually necessary and I only specify lineman pliers because they have the wide wire snipping section that made quick work of most of the trimmings. The bracket actually fit more securely than the factory original radio because there were additional support tabs. The bracket also fit well with my radio, which is a slightly older Sony Xplod (older meaning purchased in or around 2008). I was concerned over this because one reviewer stated that Sony Xplods didn't fit, I however had no issue and the radio actually fit perfectly. It should be clear to any shopper that this kit is only the bracket necessary to fit an aftermarket radio and doesn't have a wiring harness nor any splicing tools. It doesn't advertise itself as such and I did not anticipate it to have any of those things, but just to be clear for anyone viewing this product and reading my review. This kit does come with a very good manual, but the product itself was pretty straight forward and most people probably won't require the use of the manual, its just nice to have though. Overall, this kit fits perfectly in my dash and even looks pretty good once installed. It is not flimsy and I had an easy time putting it in. Compared to the other two kits that I have used previously, this one was the best of all thus far. One final remark for those of you who value this, the product is Made in the U.S.A. ... show more

  • Good quality fit, with overall good strength.
I started out with another Metra part, 99-6500, which fit my Dodge Ram 3500 Van right, but offered no support beyond the deck's steel bracket fixed to a thin plastic frame. It worked well with a cheap after-market deck, but when I put a heavier (and more powerful) deck in, the bouncing you get on a heavy truck suspension warped the plastic frame so badly the deck rattled enough that it would skip on CD playback. It bent so badly that the position of the deck was off, pointing up 10-15°. With the quality of the streets in my city following a snowy winter, this is bad, because we are nothing but potholes. This dash kit first off is based around a plastic frame roughly three times as thick as the first, and it is substantially stronger. Furthermore, the included tray (which is "welded" on and can't be removed) offers a strong backside support, giving the deck something solid to sit on. The only issues are that there are no included spots to tie the deck to the tray as additional support, however it took me 5 minutes use a Dremel-type saw to convert two of the unneeded holed tabs into braces which applied tension against the deck bracket, which prevents any upwards motion (in excess of what the vehicle sees) on the deck during bounces. A second bit of work with another removed part (the X braces that fill the deck space and need to be removed before a deck can be installed) and a couple self-tapping screws let me tie the tray into the steel frame of the dash, and we are rock solid. This additional work isn't the fault of Metra, as this kit is highly multipurpose and not necessarily intended for truck installation, but I did remove one star for the hassle. There are better kits that include back braces and additional support, but they well likely cost much more than this kit. Once installed, this does fit very well, with no gaps, and looks as good as you would expect. While I would have liked a better surface texture on the exposed portions of the frame, the deck I've used has a large high-gloss frame as well which covers most of the area (aside from the pocket) and overall the install looks very clean and professional. And after one quick trip down the street my home is on (it used to be a street, now it is a bunch of connected holes) the deck didn't skip once, so the desired result has been achieved! ... show more

  • 1998 Jeep XJ - perfect fit
This product worked perfect when installing my new JVC Bluetooth stereo into my XJ. Only had to snip the plastic out of the way in the large opening where radio actually goes in, left all the rest in place. Supports the radio very nicely.
