    • makes a large yarn cake
I have a smaller one of these that I inherited from my mother in law when she passed away, and I have used it for years, but it only makes a very small yarn cake because the "arm" that winds the yarn limits the size I can make. This one works really well, and the arm is much further out so the yarn cake you can make is large. In fact, I would a whole skein of yarn into a cake using this one. AND the arm that hold the yarn at the top is removable, it came as a separate piece in the package, so if you want to make a yarn cake even bigger, just don't use the upper arm and hold the yarn yourself. Then there would be pretty much no limit to the size cake you can make. I love using yarn cakes instead of having skeins once the skein starts to get loose. Plus, one tip, stick the yarn label rolled up inside the yarn cake and then you will always know the name, dye lot, type of yarn, etc. Especially if you use the outside yarn end to knit or crochet from instead of the inside end. Then the label just stays in there. The table clamp is easy to attach and very stable, and it will attach to a table or other surface pretty fat, since the clamp opens up wide to accommodate a thick surface. The media could not be loaded. This is a pretty good yarn winder. As a hand spinner, weaver, and crocheter I go through a lot of yarn, and I have several yarn winders. From ones that cost around 25 dollars to others that are easily 200 dollars. This one wound the yarn smoothly both forwards and backwards, or left and right-handed. The slight hesitations that you will see in the video are from the Umbrella Swift over spinning and tugging back on the yarn as it changes directions. The yarn holder rod can be adjusted to left, right, or straight ahead depending on where your yarn is in comparison to where the yarn winder is mounted. Both the yarn guide rod and the flyer rod have an eye aperture of 3/8" so most bulky and novelty yarns will go through however many rug yarns would be too thick. I would also be hesitant on art yarns spun with beehives or large decorations too. Its base is all metal, and the gears and bobbin are of various nylons or plastics. It is a little bit louder during operations than my other yarn winders. And there is a slight amount of vibration as you wind. Especially at the speed I was going. It has a fairly generous clamp depth of 2". It will fit on some of my plastic tables but others are just a hair too thick. The 2 skeins of yarn I showed in the pictures were both 400 yards, so you could easily get 1000 to 1200 yards on it, depending on the yarn gauge. There are 4 round rubber cushions on the bottom of the base, but I would have liked to see some kind of rubberized cushion on the bottom clamp, the rounded part that screws up, as it is bare metal and marks up the underneath side of a table if you aren't careful or tighten it tightly. Oh and also keep young children, curious cats, and your hands away from the yarn ball as you wind, that flyer rod will give you quite a whack if you get in its way. ... show more

The media could not be loaded. i attached a video to show how well it performs, but keep in mind, i significantly slowed rotations to more effectively present the basic function of it all. but it's like... a fine tuned dialed in machine that can really keep a solid pace. the tensioning rods are so properly positioned, it really guarantees a consistent uniformity, but most importantly, will never wrap the fiber too tightly. the images i shared are of 100% cotton a very light medium four and it spun up beautifully. the same with an even smaller weight cotton thread, the cake was perfectly proportioned. there is a certain amount of give to the finished cake that verifies the fiber isn't being stretched or warped in any way. didn't realize the metal base was green, but i still really like it, the color is calming and it has an even toned powder coated finish. with most parts being made of metal, the price point makes more sense, and the engineering element is really well articulated. so, yes, clearly i love it! stable, secure, smoothe and super fast, what is not to love ... show more
