  • Well worth the risk!!! (Like I really need another horn! 8-))
Wow! Despite some really bad reviews I took a risk...and was WELL rewarded! No sticky valves. Period - ever! Played great out of the box! I played it briefly upon delivery without having oiled it, despite clear instruction to the contrary, just to test "worst-case". Oil did improve the action, but then I didnt oil it again for several dozen hours of playing, at which time I noticed first valve slightly slower in response from 2 & 3. Oil (included) quickly solved that. Looks awesome. Fantastic as a practice horn. Has a nice "warm" cornet sound. Great for small, I door venues. I went to a #3 mouthpiece that seems to allow me to sharpen the tone better when needed. This horn noticeably UNDERPERFORMES when you want loud, in-your-face-high-brass, like playing with my son's high school pep band at a game! At "full throat" I felt like I had 1/2 the volume I should have. The included stand works just fine for folk who didn't fail basic physics. Just remember that the centerline of the bell is NOT the weight center of the horn! Position the horn weight over one of the feet or...yeah...unsupported weight falls over. One thing, and I'm surprised I didn't read about this in the reviews.... The tuning slide is on the opposite end of the horn. Normally it's in the front and that nice u-bend at the back of the horn near the mouthpiece makes a nice carrying handle. On this horn, that is the tuning slide. Attempt to hold the horn by that and the slide pulls out and you drop the horn. Fortunately I was seated when I discovered this and the horn dropped the last 3 inches onto it's stand. Which caught it without falling over. No dings or scratches. Just a minor heart attack for me! ... show more

  • Not bad not fantastic
I picked this up for the size. I am in a big band, but the membership is volunteer so knowing who shows up is a big deal. I was a tuba player through college and play trombone with the group. I needed a small trumpet to bring with me if we needed trumpet players and well this fit the bill. The tuning of the horn seems ok there are times when playing being able to lip the pitch helps. The tubing is very tight so my big hands do get in the way, but putting it down between songs helps. The brass is not thin like I thought it would be but it is not very thick like some of the better made horns but it is great for the price. The valves work ok I had to oil them a lot when I first got the horn now it is the same as some of my other low cost horns. The tuner is just a tuner I can not give it any plus or minus if you are alone it will work fine if you are in a group same as any tuner it will have problems. The stand is a joke and if you do not put the instrument on just right it will fall over. The case is nice it is a soft hard case so it will protect from most problems but not all. There is one pocket good for holding the cloth and a bottle of valve oil and thats it so do not hope to hold music unless you fold it. Not bad for the buy. Works well for a back up instrument or a gimmick. I would not recommend this for a starter instrument or for someones primary, but for what I use it for not bad. ... show more

  • I am a comeback player and like to take this trumpet with me when i travel ...
I purchased this pocket trumpet about 3 years ago. I am a comeback player and like to take this trumpet with me when i travel for work. Use a Yamaha Silent Brass system mute in the hotel and have not had a complaint yet about playing a trumpet in a hotel room at 6:00am. I bought the Gold plated horn and it still looks like new minus a few small dents from using a trumpet gig bag when traveling. The sound quality is not up to my Benge Claude Gordon trumpet but it does get the job done with a very bright tone quality. Regarding the intonation, it does not slot very well and that works good for jazz bending notes when playing the blues and can make playing some notes in tune a little challenging. Ear training solved that problem with the those problem notes, i can't blame the horn when the note can be bent up or down by using your lips. Some people are not aware it is your ears that helps the lips make the horn play in tune. Well built solid little horn for the money. The only negative thing i can say, because of all of the extra bends in the tubing the horn plays a little stuffy and makes the low notes more difficult to ring with a clear tone quality, playing pedal tones are a challenge. ... show more

  • Small Trumpet, Big Sound
This was purchased as a birthday gift for my daughter and she LOVES it. She calls it "Baby Trumpet" and it truly does look like a baby trumpet. Don't let the size fool you though...it has big sound! It arrived in a box with that made the contents obvious, so take note if you are planning to have this left on your porch of front stoop. Inside, it is well packaged in it's own carrying case and has everything you need to care for it, even gloves. We love the portable nature of this and the novelty too. It is a really good buy for a trumpet player that is comfortable with a full sized instrument or an experienced player that just wants a fun, easy to transport instrument. ... show more

  • You Get What You Pay For
This horn is decent for what you pay for it. The stand is cheap and wobbly so I wouldn't suggest using it. The tuner/metronome works well however and comes with batteries so that's a plus. The horn is a tight fit in the case but the case protects it well. The actual horn doesn't have the best sound but it was still better than I expected. One thing you have to be careful with this horn is the valves. When I ordered the horn, it came while I was in school. Because of this, it was sitting on my front steps for a couple hours so when I brought it inside it was freezing cold. This caused the valves to stick and become very slow. I took the valves out and oiled them with Blue Juice, my preferred valve oil. Getting the valves lined up again inside the horn is VERY difficult. It took me over an hour and a half to get the horn to play again. Also, I would not suggest using the mouthpiece that comes with the horn, as it's a piece of junk. ... show more
