  • Travel companion lens
I wanted a compact lens for travel and everyday use. The length of the lens is similar to the kit lens (when it’s contracted), but it’s slightly heavier. The affordable price means I don’t have to worry about banging it up. Quality feels good and it’s adaptable to different lighting situations. I was able to shoot without struggle at the end of golden hour and into twilight. The camera could pick up small details that can be edited in post. Update: I've had this lens for a month now and used it during 2 trips. Cons: The lens cap has a tendency to fall off. I put the camera in my bag during a flight and the lens cap came off. Luckily the lens wasn't damaged, but I was shoving stuff in and out of the bag without knowing the cap came off. I'm considering getting a lens cap with a leash. If you don't want to hassle with a shifting aperture ring then this lens isn't for you. The aperture ring does not click into place, so it has a tendency to move. This doesn't bother me since I tend to shoot with a fixed aperture. Next time I take photos, I will put electrical tape on the aperture ring to stop it from moving. Pros: The lens is manual focus, so shooting with the camera is incredibly fast. I have a Sony A6000 and all what I have to do is switch it on and it's ready to go. No waiting for autofocus. I set my aperture and focal length beforehand, and whenever I want to shoot, I just turn it on. This is incredibly helpful for street photography and taking "in the moment" photos when timing is key. The camera's battery life lasts way longer with a manual lens. I quickly turn it on, take photos, then switch it off. I can go a whole day without switching batteries. Teaching your friends and family how to use your camera with manual focus is easy. On a sunny day, I set the aperture to 8, and the focal length to 5 ft-infinity. I tell them to stand 5 ft or further and click the shutter. I also turn on the "focus peaking" in the color red. I tell them anything outlined in red will be in focus. It's that easy. Conclusion: This lens isn't for everyone. If you prefer (or are used to) shooting with autofocus and want better aperture control, I wouldn't recommend purchasing this lens. It doesn't have those features. The lens is very stripped back in terms of features and design. The price is under $100, so don't expect it to have all the bells and whistles. Using this lens is similar to using old film cameras. For me, this lens is a good affordable option for travel and everyday use. Excellent in shooting speed and conserving battery. It's not the best lens out there, but it does what I want it to. ... show more

  • Awesome lens worth the money!!!!
I am using this with the Sony a5000 and it takes great pictures and video. I am impressed with the bokeh effect you can get out of this lens from the f1.7. Not to mention that I also get very sharp images out of this lens. The manual focus is great for me as it allows less sensitivity for more precise focus points. I find it easier to find the perfect focus point, as I am turning the lens focus ring. The lens is made of premium quality as it feels solid and the lens rings are pretty smooth. It worked out of the box with my Sony a5000 camera and I haven’t found any issues with it. This is a great addition to the stock lens I have as it gives me a better aperture and more precise focus option. The lens it is a little heavier compare to the stock lens that came with my camera, but it doesn’t make a huge difference when I am out and about shooting videos with this lens. Def recommend if you are looking for a budget friendly lens that will give you an amazing quality for a good price. ... show more

  • Sharp pictures on this manual lens
Nice solid lens. Very sharp pictures with nice bokeh. Great price. I have only played with it once (yesterday). It will take some getting used to using a manual lens. I am using Peeking feature on my Sony a6000 to determine focus. I like the fact I can see the focus area change as I change the aperture when using peeking. Because the lens is manual the zoom magnification I am used to using when focusing manually is not available and I miss that. I feel I am guessing in determining when I have the picture sharpest. (But from my first pictures I hit it on the mark quite often.) The markings on the lens are not specific enough to be able to rely on using them when setting the focus. I am also missing the aperture reading on the camera. As I am playing with the lens and trying to take pictures at different apertures to determine the best results I have no way of determining what aperture was used when I took each picture. Will need to take a recorder or pen and paper for a while. ... show more

  • Very good value
Let's be clear. This lens has no auto-aperture, no auto-focus, and isn't weatherproof. It isn't a top end lens. What it is, is wonderfully sharp, small, easy to use, and ridiculously cheap. I got it to have something smaller than the large kit lens my a6300 came with and I'm surprised at how often I use it over the more dexterous lens. I feel like the image quality is better too. ... show more

  • Nothing special
Affordable. That’s about it. The connection is not smooth, it felt like I was grinding metal together every time I put this lens on. The picture quality was sub-par. It wasn’t terrible, but if you’re looking for a sharp image, this lens just can’t do it. As for the focus ring and build quality, they were actually alright. Nothing to write home about however. Overall I ended up returning it to buy a vintage lens. ... show more

  • Affordable manual lens for your APS-C Sony!
One of the great advantages of mirrorless cameras, is adapting vintage lenses to your camera, especially for filming video. That's part of why I like this lens so much - it's build quality, image quality, and even price remind me of a vintage lens! I have no issues with the image quality - it's sharp, but not TOO sharp like some modern lenses. This leaves images and video looking more natural, like the lenses of yesteryear. Solid metal and glass build quality - again, just like the adapted vintage lenses that are getting harder to find each year! Full manual focusing and Aperture ring. With video, manual focus is sometimes preferred, and with Photos, using a Sony with focus-peaking makes it a breeze. Take your time and compose, it will be relaxing to go a little slower! (Although I know some manual shooters who are almost as fast as modern AF lenses!) ESPECIALLY for the price, this is a great buy for the right person, especially Sony APS-C video shooters. ... show more
