  • Cool Pokemon brick set!
My son and I put this together, he loves it. The pieces clicked together securely for the most part and he's having fun playing with it. The Mega brand sets have good instructions overall, but not quite as intuitive as Lego so he needed help figuring out some things here and there. It takes up a good amount of room once it's all assembled and the hinged pieces that attach to the main stadium part are opened. During assembly we found there was one piece missing, but that's probably more on us than the packaging, since we built it over the course of a few days and we probably lost it. The missing piece isn't critical to the set anyway so not a big deal. ... show more

  • Great Play Features, Some Stability Issues
My 6-year-old boy loves Pokemon and LEGO, so I jumped at the opportunity to order this product. I am happy that the product is more than just the Pokemon license. He needed some help building the set, and he continues to play with it after it was built. First, the quality of the pieces are not as good as LEGO. The pieces are stiff and take more force to assemble and disassemble. However, all the instructions are high quality and all the images are printed on the blocks. No stickers! Assembly took my son weeks, and he would frequently get frustrated and make mistakes. He made more mistakes than he does for LEGO sets, but I can’t pinpoint why. For me, it was interesting to see a different take on building block toys. The assembly has many clever building techniques. For example, Mega Block used studs on the side to create a convex texture on the outer wall. Also, there are a lot of specialty molded pieces that LEGO doesn’t use. Unfortunately, there are a lot of “gaps” in construction. Pieces aren’t always flush to one another. My guess is to reduce the piece count and price. However, this creates some stability issues that make the set hard to move and fragile. It feels a little like it is held together by threads and gum. Once assembled, the set is sprawling and has a lot of features. The convex walls are appealing and modern. Some of the details are fantastic. I am especially fond of how the entrance looks. However, other parts of the set are bland. The overall appearance is good but a little uneven. The best part is smart play features. In the stadium, each battle platform comes with a blaster surrounded by two targets. Using a clever mechanism, the blasters can shoot molded energy pieces. The objective is to knock down the opponent’s targets first. My 6-year-old and his older brother love this game and play with this set a lot more than other building block sets. However, something always breaks after a round or two because of the set’s fragility. Fortunately, they are easy to fix. I also feel the set provides excellent value for the asking price. It took several hours to build and continues to be appealing for play! It has a high piece count and comes with 5 Pokemon. Considering competitor’s prices and the license it is a great deal. For that reason, I have awarded it 5 stars. ... show more

  • The Pokemon are the real draw
The building set was very fun to build with my daughters (8 and 10). The (perhaps unfortunate, perhaps unexpected) thing that arose was that the kids were very interested in assembling the pokemon and using them, as they are cutesy and have articulated bits that make them fun to play with. The training stadium was not as interesting for them to build. It's a cool and thematic set and the figures look great in it, but the kids were more into it for the "action figure/toy" aspect than the building, which was the inverse of what I've seen with other construction sets from similar brands. Speaking of similar brands, these blocks do interlock with them alright, they just feel ever-so-slightly different when you click them in. Overall it's a good set, but as with most Pokemon merchandise, the little creatures are the real main event and not the buildings they inhabit. ... show more

  • Quite a set
Mega has really come a long way as a brand and I've been surprisingly pleased with the sets that have come out of the Pokemon collaboration. They seem to get better every year. The sets in this series range from display-oriented to play-oriented, and this one definitely favors the latter. While it's a decent display piece when closed, it's not quite as good for that as say the Pokemon center set. This one is really about play so it's much more focused on the kid audience. This is especially true in the arena where two Pokemon can hurl "attacks" at each other and strike targets for points. Mega instructions are some of the clearest and easiest to follow and this set is no exception. Price is a little steep for the moment but these sets usually see discounts with time. ... show more

  • Neat Pokémon, plenty of interactive parts
These MEGA sets have become a hit in our household. This set in particular was so fun to build, and continue to play with. We have multiple Pokémon sets already, and this set can connect with those. It took my seven year old about six hours with breaks in between to build. He did have to have some help from us. The Pokémon themselves are a neat addition with more than the standard pikachu. There are moving pieces, a working scoreboard, and the set can open/close making it easier to store with our other sets. Easily the same value as our LEGO sets. The price of this set I find to be slightly more expensive than competitors but makes up for the price difference in moving parts and cool accessories. ... show more
