My apartment in San Jose, CA is older and has no water softener for the shower. I tried to find ways to at least reduce the hardness of the water for my bathroom. FYI, the water in California's Santa Clara County is outrageously hard. On average, it's 320 PPM! My friend suggested getting a filter for my bathroom. I bought this attachment, but I wanted more filtering power so I bought a shower head with a separate filter built into it. After a week of using the filter and shower head in tandem, I became curious and decided to see if they were really reducing the hardness of my shower water. I bought water hardness testing strips by Varify. I tested bottled water by Crystal Geyser, my unfiltered bath water, and water that was filtered with both my shower head and this filter attachment. Here are the results: TOTAL HARDNESS Crystal Geyser: 25ppm Unfiltered bath water: 320ppm Filtered Shower water: 250ppm I performed this test 3 times to make sure the results were consistent, which they were. This filter attachment does in fact reduce the hardness of water, and does reduce chlorine smell as well. It doesn't soften it to the level of bottled water, but as we can see with the results I got the total amount of PPM removed was about 70. With that being said, if you want to reduce the hardness of your water and chlorine smell, give this filter a try! It was very easy to install, and came with extras to make the job easier. So this is the first part of the review. I just received the filter and the instructions were simple and easy, but here are a few tips. Not everyone's shower is the same and the instructions said I did not need the rubber stoppers which is not true. When I installed it without a stopper inside my shower head in between the filter, and turned it on, it leaked water. You will need this depending on your head. Once I placed the rubber ring inside my shower head and screwed it on, the extreme water coming from the hinge area stopped almost completely. It is a bit rough getting it to stay straight depending on your shower head, but very easy install. Just be sure to wait before you throw the rings out. Also there is a cartridge already inside the silver vessel and a second one in a white box. I flushed the one in the white box without realizing one was already inside the vessel. My updated review will be have i noticed a difference in my skin and hair after using it. They have increased the chlorine in our water here, so my hair has been damaged badly. If it works good i will buy a couple more to filter my sink water also. Update: After a couple months or so of use, my hair and skin are clear and my hair isn't shedding and extremely dry anymore. As the water is being filtered it feels softer and doesn't feel as if it stings. My skin is healing and the dryness that my feet endured is gone. Less dandruff also. My youngest 4 sleeps much better after taking a shower also. I want to live in the shower, but I cant. Lol. Old and dead skin is sloughing off and smooth healthy skin is surfacing. I'm very satisfied and plan to buy more filters. The filters last for about 2 months with the use of 3 kids 1 adult every day or every other day. I actually debated a higher priced more well known brand. However thought I would give this a try. I moved into a new home about a year ago and this municipality water uses a lot of chlorine!!! My skin was dry red and leather like no matter what moisturizer I used. Even cetaphil Which btw I also recommend and Vaseline did not touch my dry skin woes . My skin had gotten so bad that the shower water would actually sting it First use today. It took literally 5 minutes for this girl to install with no tools. Everything u need is in the box even plumbers tape. Yes!!! I showered and it felt so silky smooth I couldn’t believe the difference My lotion even went on easier and this just my first use I can’t wait to see the difference it makes in my hair as of course it’s become dry too I have only written 2-3 reviews on anything in my life. It’s just not usually something I do. But I am so pleased with this purchase. My only regret is waiting so long !!! I might also add I had checked into a whole house system a few months ago and was unable to do as I currently rent. Plus it is outrageously priced!!! After many years of dry, frizzy, and tangled hair, I began noticing that my hair quality would briefly improve while I traveled. My hairdresser let me know that I have a mineral build-up in my hair and hard water and I should try a shower filter. After moving a few months ago and suffering with dirty feeling hair and tangled because of the water change one shower with these installer made a world of difference. I was at my wit’s end with my long wavy hair that usually was so nice after moving and three months of it looking dull, greasy, and just a general mess. I looked into getting a whole house water system but just couldn’t commit to the expense and figured I would try this filter. I am so glad that I did!
