We got this for my 98 year mom (who is bedridden) to prevent bedsores. The mechanical pump inflates it nicely, and you leave it attached. Air doesn't escape though the compressor pump. First it blows up half the bubbles from top to bottom, then it heads back up for the other bubbles. This keeps it from deflating unevenly. And there's plastic that extends beyond the mattress at both ends so you can tuck it in and keep it from moving around. My mom is very comfortable sleeping on it.

I personally love this. I used to love a hard mattress. As I got older it became uncomfortable. This makes it easier to sleep.

This thing really works, I actually bought it for a different purpose, I use it as a air mattress, when I travel overseas. the beds are just too hard! but this thing blew me away! it will work for your ill patient, it not only inflates despite the weight, it also has different setting that can even sort of make it vibrate, providing like a sort of massage. really great sturdy quality.. I would recommend this bar none.

I’m waiting for another hip replacement and have been told to keep the weight off my hip as much as possible. Even with an adjustable bed, my joints felt sore from pressing into the bed. This alternating air flow pad quietly and gently moves your body just enough to keep joints from feeling sore. It has two sets of air pockets evenly distributed over its surface and alternately cycles air pressure through each set of pockets every 6 minutes. Very glad I found this.

Worked for about a day and a half but is unable to maintain pressure no matter what is done. My grandmother's bed sores continue to progress. Do not invest in something cheap, get something better made for your loved one.
