  • Overall Decent Pump
Style: Pump In Style w/Bottles & Shields
I am a first time Mom and have been lucky to try 2 versions of the Medela pump already, the older stand alone version of the Medela Pump In Style Advanced (PISA) and also the backpack version of the PISA, so this will be my 3rd Medela pump. I pump 3-6 times a week now (I used to pump more often) and had the opportunity to use the new Medela Pump In Style with MaxFlow 2020 version in return for my honest review. I want to be as thorough as I can for those who are looking into a pump as I know its so overwhelming :) The Pump: The pump itself is really appealing at first glance. Very compact compared to the PISA and much lighter. Is has a hard casing, as the PISA had a black bag or backpack that went around it and you could not take out the pump itself. I do not travel much with my pump, I mainly use it at home but I could imagine the new MaxFlow would be so much better for portability. It is quieter than the PISA however the noise never really bothered me as I am home pumping. It advertised that it increases milk volume 11% but I have yet to see a difference in my output, I am pumping about the same output as before. I think those moms that exclusively pump hopefully see that increase. Now the MaxFlow has 4 buttons that are while the PISA has a dial and a button. This makes it looks much sleeker. Cons: The pump, like I said, looks awesome however there is no indicator on what suction level you are on. It has a ‘+’ and ‘-‘ sign but no window to show what number or suction you are on so you are left guessing or remembering ‘oh let me press it 5 times’. I much prefer the PISA where I knew exactly where to place the dial for my maximum output. Unfortunately, with the MaxFlow, I’m still trying to figure that out. I will say that the suction does seem weaker than my stand alone PISA that is 5-6 years old and as I noticed the same thing with my backpack version of the PISA. The suction seems to be getting weaker as the new versions comes out, I would think the suctions would get stronger or at least stay the same. The Flages: The flages I can say are much better. They have this rubber around the rims that makes it much more comfortable for pumping. It comes with both a 23mm and 21mm which is nice to have the option instead of just the common size. I actually use a 19mm with my PISA, an off brand, and found that they do not make this size again for the MaxFlow so I use the 21mm and they seem okay, I think I would do much better with a smaller size so hopefully they will make those eventually. The Tubing: The tubing is much better. There is a plastic piece that connects to the actual pump now which holds much better than the PISA, mine would slip off occasionally. It is thicker and seems more durable. Its easier to pump just one side if you need, all you do is disconnect from the pump and stick it in the ‘Y’ tubing area to secure the suction is closed. Now the only down fall I see with the tubing is it is a little shorter than I would like. I wish it had a few more inches to it to give me more range to do things as I sit and pump. The Bag: I haven’t used the bag personally, but it looks nice and grey color is very neutral. It seems like the pump can fit with plenty of space for bottles or whatever else you need The Connectors: Now this might be the biggest Con to me, and maybe because I’m a first time mom and I like to see everything that’s going on especially when I’m pumping, but they redesigned the whole connector. The membranes are much larger to prevent backflow which I have had no problems with. The biggest problem I see is that the connectors are a solid white color, not clear. I don’t know why they would change this. I mean it looks much sleeker and clean, so possibly that’s the reason but I like to see what exactly is coming out, how much, how fast, if I have a clog I like to see that its coming out and especially towards the end of my pump I like to make sure I pump it all out and now I find myself leaning over trying to see if I see any drops in the bottle. The tunnel where the flanges connect is much shorter which helps in blocking to see what is going on. I find myself pumping for a longer amount of time because of this, I was so used to seeing what is going on and now that I can’t I sit longer in hopes that I’m pumping it all out instead of knowing. So if you are one that likes to see exactly what is happening like me, you might want to take that into consideration. The Powersource: It comes with both a wall connector and a portable battery pack. The portable battery pack takes AA batteries. I really wish it came with a rechargeable battery as I know some other pumps do. So possibly the next version with have that option. Overall, this pump has improved. It is much more portable and compact compared to the PISA. I like that its not connected to a backpack, I hated that, and that it can stand alone. It more comfortable then the other, and really, comfort and function is most important. The biggest drawback that does not fully allow me to love it is that the connector is not clear so I can’t fully see what is going on. I think that is all preference though. If this were my first Breast pump I know I would love it, no question. I think Medela listened to their Mama’s and made changes that greatly improved this pump however I think a few more changes and it would be amazing. ... show more

  • Game Changer!
Style: Collection Cups
I love medela. I have used there electric pumps, manual pumps and now their wearable cups. These are by far the best options I have used. I loved my electric pump but got tired of having to put on my special bra to hold them in place. Now that I have the cups I can wear what ever bra I want and hold the cups in appropriately. I get just a much milk as the others but I can pump a lot more often. ... show more

  • Best investment for exclusive pumping moms
Style: Collection Cups
My insurance covered the Medela Pump In Style with regular shields/bottles for pumping. The hands free cups were amazing for going back to work and being able to pump while still working. Had the same suction power and ease of connecting to my existing pump.

  • Decent pump!
Style: Pump In Style w/Bottles & Shields
I love that it doesn’t have much to clean - nice and easy to use. Would’ve been nice if it had a display screen to show suction level. Slowly building a stack using my lovely pump - I only pump 3-4 times a day. I normally have to hold them in place when pumping or put on a nursing bra to keep it in place. Takes a bit getting used to the suction as it is a bit harsh at first, once you are used it, works good. Pump is noisy enough that it can be heard from the other party while on the phone. Not as great as the hospital grade pump! ... show more

  • Simply put, don’t waste your money.
Style: Pump In Style w/Bottles & Shields
When I got pregnant, my insurance at the time offered a portable pump (Freemie) and I selected it not realizing that it wasn’t really the best fit for a standalone pump for every day use. I was lucky enough to be able to borrow a Spectra from a cousin, and around 6 months into breastfeeding, I had to return the Spectra because she needed it again. Knowing I was gonna make a big investment, and I had just accepted a new job that would take me out of the house, I was willing to spend a decent amount of money to get a pump that could travel with me. I was convinced by my aunt who was a Medela rep back in the 90s that this was the only way to go if I had to buy my own pump. I combed through reviews, and selected this Pump in Style model. Up to this point, I was mainly pumping to feed my daughter so it was a lot of trust to put into this machine. When it arrived, I was impressed by the sleek style. It is compact, the stock flanges fit me great, and the machine was not a complete atrocity to look at. The pump has an automatic setting when you turn it on that mimics your babe; it pumps lower suction at a fast rate, and then a few moments later (post let-down) it slows down, again, mimicking what our babes do. I like this function, it worked well for me, it pumped a comparable amount (if not slightly more) than my spectra. It is a little louder than other machines, but nothing too crazy. The parts of the pump (the overflow protector etc) were a little difficult to take a part and put together, and unlike my spectra, the flange unit all put together is too heavy and cannot be put down on a table to rest without an inconvenient base attachment which made it difficult to juggle pump parts and try to store my milk at the same time (I.e definitely not ideal for moms on the go). I treated this pump and the pump parts exactly as I treated all my other pumps and pump parts. The pump was stored in my pumping cart and I pulled apart and washed everything separate and let them air dry. Day 1.5 of having this pump, I put all the parts together after they sat on the rack drying from the last pump session (~3 hours), and sit down for a pump session only for the tubes to suck in some water and the pump to make an audible slurping sound & stop. The pump was fried. I was so confused. I contacted Medela and the agent was incredibly friendly and next-day delivered me a new pump. As many of you know, that means I had to use my freemie/hand express/etc while my babe was in daycare and of course it led to a clogged duct which then led to mastitis. New pump arrives, i sanitize everything and get ready to test it’s travel-ability. Now that I was aware that the pump was sensitive, I took extra care to dry all the parts before putting it all together. I brought this pump in an American Airlines flight from FL to California and pumped in my seat. The small device went unnoticed my my neighbors and I was satisfied. The last day of my trip to California, I sit down for a pump session before heading back to the airport and the same water suction thing happened again. This is now a less than 5 day old replacement pump. The parts of my pump were completely wiped dry which leads me to think that somehow my milk got into the tubing… This tells me that these pumps are NOT closed system and the overflow protector doesn’t work well, so buyer beware. I am so disappointed in the quality of the pump, the overflow protector that failed in me twice, and the fact that neither brand new pump lasted longer than 5 days… I didn’t bother asking for another replacement. Now I have two broken medela units sitting in my house collecting dust because I was never sent a return label (any help, Medela?) . Long story short, disappointed. The over complicated overflow protector makes it so water/milk gets stuck and destroys your pump. I also must imagine that means it’s vest hard to actually sanitize. Don’t waste your money.. my crappy freemie is still going strong ... show more

  • GREAT 👍
Style: Pump In Style w/Bottles & Shields
I bought this after being provided a defective Nature's Bond pump by my insurance. The difference is like night and day! Clear and easy to follow instructions. Easy to assemble simple parts. Whisper quiet. Good pumping rate. I got 60mL (combined, double pumping) in 12 minutes. My baby is 9 days old.
