At first I didn’t like these filters because I thought the chip was defective and wouldn’t allow you to reset the refrigerator to count the number of days so the next filter change was on time. Turns out you can, and that feature works accurately, but there’s no instructions that came with it on how to do so. After a bunch of Googling and some YouTubes that don’t have intuitive search tags, I figured out how to do it with these. Now I just have to remember how to a few times a year. Water tastes and smells the same as the brand name filters, but I did notice more white-scale is left in the tray below the dispenser than when I used the brand name, so maybe it’s not filtering as well as brand. I guess there’s no real way of knowing short of independent, head-to-head testing. But since we’re all healthy here and the water tastes fine I don’t think I’ll be paying $30 more per filter (brand) to find out. I lived just fine for decades with tap water before we even had filtered fridge and ubiquitous bottled water, so… ... show more

    • [One Year Update] Finally... A less expensive alternative.

After being appalled at the price of the GE-branded filters, and failing miserably at "hacking" a cheap filter, I was pleasantly surprised to see these filters pop up. While not cheap-cheap, they're more reasonable and seem to work great so far. Easy to install with no leaks. It runs clear after about a half a gallon flush. Fingers crossed. [6-month update]: Well, 8 month update. Despite the "Change Filter" warnings from the refrigerator, I let the first filter go two months beyond its expected use date. I can happily report no leaks or any other issues with filter #1, so out goes filter #1 and in goes filter #2 for another 6 (er... 8 ) months. I can see that the price of this filter has gone up over 22% percent in the past 6 months, but so has the real GE RPWFE, so using this filter is still about 20% less expensive. [1 year update]: One year and two Maxblue filters later, I'm happy to report no issues at all. They seem like a solid buy, and I'm happy to see that the price has started coming back down. ... show more
