Makes cake yarn size not round balls. Do look at the part that attaches to the underside of table. Mine was upside down, when fixed it worked perfectly. Easy turn of handle so yarn does not collect under disk.

This ball winder is fantastic! It clamps on firmly, and in just a minute or two you can wind a perfect ball of yarn. There is no assembly, it comes ready to use. The only problem I had in the beginning is I did not have the yarn holder arm in the right position and it wound the ball at the bottom of the ball holder and would not make a very big ball. Having never used a ball winder before, I thought it pretty useless. But then I discovered my mistake, and it made the most beautiful, perfect, large ball that feeds off from the center as you crochet or knit so you don't have to worry about it being able to roll around freely. I remember how my mom used to put her hand wound yarn balls in a bowl to keep them from rolling all over the place. But this ball feeds off so well, I can just hold it in my lap. I appreciated the fact that it took the yarn from the skein so smoothly, and yet I could rewind the first balls I made, or even loose yarn. You do have to hold some tension on the yarn as it's winding, in order for it to wind on smoothly, because the winder does not have a tensioner spring for the yarn to slide through like at least some of the electric ball winders do. It really does not take much effort or time to wind a ball with this winder, so I don't think an electric winder would be better, especially if you run into any times when you need to stop and straighten out the feed line of yarn. So in summary, this is a really useful, efficient. necessary item for any knitter or crocheter.
