Description

Intuitive belay device with reliable blocking of the climbing rope. The first generation of the Smart belay device was successfully launched in 2009. Built on the experience the new Smart 2.0 offers significantly improved braking effectiveness as well as optimized geometry and intuitive handling. The newly developed brake insert blocks the rope in the event of a fall. The belaying action of the Smart 2.0 is the same as the previous model and is therefore tailored to the belayer's reflex movements.

It's okay for saddle hunting

If you're using this belay device as intended for rock climbing I'm sure it's amazing but for saddle hunting rappelling with it works but isn't the easiest.

OK for certain situations

Good for a very limited application which is lead-belay with single rope where the belayer's reliability or experience is less than optimal - probably in a multi pitch context. In the case of a lead fall, the device will lock without the belayer taking any action and it would be difficult (but not impossible) for the belayer to prevent this through some combination of poor hand position or distraction. The functional price for this security is high however. Feeding slack is very awkward and feeding slack quickly is almost out of the question regardless of experience level; predictably impossible for a beginner. It also sucks as rappel device; don't even try it. As a toprope belay point to belay a second directly off the anchor, it's fine but nothing remarkable. Bottom line: similar to Grigri as an auto-lock with the same requirement to set it up correctly and overall lower performance compared to a Grigri. Even better than original
The Mammut Smart has long been my favorite belay device, with the only drawback being the jerky lowering action. 2.0 has solved that problem!
