  • HONEST review after months on the job sites
Style: Miter saw
The media could not be loaded. Just to inform the reader, I have no preference of brand, I have them all, as long as it is of good value and quality. I rather spend a few extra $$ and get something I won’t regret. I searched extensively for a compact miter saw that would fit my needs and also be a long term investment. I had two requirements: corded and “compact”. In reality it’s not a tiny saw when you consider it’s a compound saw with sliding rails, but that is outweighed by the mere fact you can use this saw for so many applications - trim, moldings, casings, flooring, common lumber etc. Upon arrival, it was very well packed and shipped in it’s original packaging. Taking it out and looking at it it has some features that just seem “cheap”. Little things such as the clamp, extensions, screws and the fact it didn’t have a clip on the corded head. It seemed like short cuts were taken. Regardless, i was excited for a new tool. Before anything, I took silicone spray and sprayed and wiped all surfaces and lubricated all moving points (did this from some reviews stating it was rusting). I have used it on many small jobs now where I don’t need to set up a shop with my festool kapex. (I’m a boutique contractor you could say - I do all the job others don’t want to be bothered with). It has done really well for the applications I’ve needed it for. There is some play in the rail but once you know this you just have to do a fluent cut without left or right pull/push force. The table is a bit small, so even with the table extensions it’s useless. I made separate blocks to hight of the table to resolve this issue. If you have a miter stand, this of course isn’t necessary. The dust port is adequate, not the best, even with a vacuum attached there is a fair amount of larger saw dust escaping. The light is useless The safety lock is poorly designed with the plastic cap always coming off when you pull on it. Overall, the motor, trigger, compact size, company rep, and saws versatility makes this a great investment. I gave it only three honest stars because I think it’s a tad overpriced and lacks some “quality” parts. I uploaded a video of it in action cutting a pine brick molding. ... show more

  • My favorite compound miter saw
Style: Miter saw
I own multiple slide miters. This is the only small one, it is by far my favorite and the most versatile and easy to use. I believe mine is now 6 years old. So I’m not reviewing a shiny new toy. This saw gets worked daily for everything from pvc to furniture crown and does all well. With the exception of really fine finish work and the occasional large piece, you could own this saw and nothing else. ... show more

  • All Around Excellent Sliding Miter Saw
Style: Miter saw
This saw hit all the sweet spots I needed. - 12 inch cross cut capacity - Lightweight - Precise And its affordable While the saw lacks a double bevel or positive stops on the bevel Makita provides a chart for cutting crown molding using the single bevel. The purchase of a Wixel Angle Gauge is a good compliment to any saw where the blade will be titled (regardless of positive stops). The only issue I really had with the saw is that the bevel gauge is directly under the sliders making it hard to read angle settings accurately. This is where a 3rd party digital angle gauge comes in handy and is going to be more precise than any popular tool makers "positive" stops. For the contractor doing trim or finish carpentry, this is the saw to get. At 30 pounds its easy to relocate from a truck to the job site and can be moved around from room to room with ease. Hobbyists and home owners will appreciate the large accurate cross cut for decks, shelving, molding, etc. Save your back and your wallet and get this versus a 10 inch sliding miter. ... show more

  • Not your father's Makita:-(
Style: Miter saw
My father was a contractor and always rated Makita very highly. Later while working for a home builder I noted that Makita had a strong presence amongst the finish carpenters. I have also used Makita tools over the years doing various carpentry work as well and have a favorable impression of them. They are a bit more expensive in some cases, but well built, well engineered, and precise. This nostalgia led me to confidently buy this Makita 8 1/2" slider on Amazon. However, I was dismayed to find upon opening the package that Makita has used cheap plastic parts in important places such as the miter lock knob, the miter latch, power/safety switch on the handle, and the bevel lock knob. The miter latch in particular gets a lot of use (every time you change the miter angle), and is really thin and flimsy, sort of what you might expect on cheap children's toys. Every time you make a cut you feel this thing and think, "what a junky part, I wonder how long it will last..". I really cannot believe that they have used this material- very disappointing. The only other negative thing I would not is that the preset positive miter stops (90, 45 degree etc) have some play. Of course you tighten it down (but where in the slot do you tighten it down- do you always go left or right??) but with about a 64th inch play on a long angle this can be a significant gap on a miter for finish work. Otherwise the saw cuts well, the soft start is nice, and the fence and table work fine. The fence needed to be trued but this is standard procedure on a new saw. Because of the small blade size and the configuration of the blade guard it is difficult to view your cut line so it would benefit from a laser, or at least some notches in the guard like Dewalt has. Probably the best thing about this saw the small size and weight which makes it really easy to pack around. I have trimmed out one house with it and it does the job, so I will stick with this one rather than go through the trouble and expense of shipping it back and looking for a new saw. This saw seems to be made for the do it yourself market rather than professionals, and to be fair it is priced a couple hundred dollars below their most expensive miter saws. So I would recommend this saw for do it yourselfers that don't mind spending a bit more, or pro's that want a lightweight saw, and are willing to be very careful about how they handle it. ... show more
