  • Best sander in its class
I purchased this sander a few months ago to replace a similar type Bosch. I run a small custom cabinet shop and use finish sanders hard and constantly. So far this sander is performing without any problems and has ample power to do what I need it to do. The biggest problem that I have run across with other sanders like the Bosch, Dewalt, and Porter Cable sanders is that they do not have enough power. They work ok until you add some top pressure, then they bog down and run hot. This sander does not. The Dewalt sander has a slightly higher amperage rating than this one and still seems to slow down. Consistent sanding RPM is a key factor in getting a proper and evenly sanded surface (if not, you'll find out when the stain goes on!). The adjustable second knob handle is very convenient for applying even sanding pressure and can be moved to any position around the sander or removed completely. The dust bag would be the only complaint since they have only a minimal effect on capturing dust (all dust bags on these type of sanders really do not work). This sander was instead easily connected to a dust extraction machine in my shop but could also be connected to a shop vac the same way with the right hose and adapter (Amazon carries all the hoses and fittings to make this work). With all things considered, Makita has designed and built a good sander for the price. Sure there are bigger and more powerful sanders but they are not in the same class as these lightweight and compact sanders. I am purchasing another one of these to replace a Porter Cable sander that broke for the last time. ... show more

  • Best orbital sander I've ever used - ever! Buy it with your money!
"Sanding is my favorite task" - said no one, ever. But let me tell ya, sanding with this bad boy is almost a pleasure. I've owned a few Makita tools over the years, but none recent, until this beauty. I'm glad to see Makita is still making quality tools. The first thing you notice is that the case it comes in could probably survive a nuclear attack. Even good tools often come in cheap cases - not here. I won't go over the controls - it's a sander, you can probably figure it out. I will say that the vibration that's transferred from the sander to my hand is noticeably less than any other sander I've used, including the DeWalt. I've never considered vibration to be a problem per se - I mean, it's a sander. That's what they're supposed to do - they vibrate. But somehow Makita has figured out how to focus that vibration into the work piece instead of your hands. On large sanding tasks, it saves you a lot of fatigue. And did I mention "quiet"? My goodness this thing is *quiet* for a sander. Like quieter than any I've ever used. That just adds to the overall ease of use that makes this sander an outstanding value at twice the price. My favorite feature of this sander is also, unfortunately, the only bad thing about it. It has a variable speed knob (a feature that I LOVE and didn't know I needed until I had it), almost like a variac, on the top of the handle. Even though it's printed with numerals 1-5, there are no detents, and the knob itself turns quite easily. Being on the top of the handle means that you're probably going to accidentally change the motor speed as you're sanding unless you're super-careful. This isn't a huge deal, but it's really the only thing that detracts from what is otherwise hands-down the best orbital sander I've ever used. Makita could fix this one tiny flaw by putting detents on that speed knob. ... show more

  • What a great little sander and polisher
I could not have done my project without the Makita 5”variable speed sander, Tongbay 100pcs 5” sanding discs, Autolock 5" buffing polishing pads and Meguires 105 compound. I love this little beast of a sander and polisher. I was trying to sand out scratches on my 24 year old Avonite kitchen countertop. I have a 20” x 20” extra piece to experiment with. I intentionally put some scratches in half of that extra piece. I started with 5” - 400 grit hook and loop sanding disc, moved through each grit until I got to 2000 on my 5” Makita orbital sander I cleaned the piece between grit changes. Absolutely no problems with the sand paper. But only doing ½ of the 20”x20” piece with a Makita 5” orbital sander. It did seem that the sand paper did load up with a white dust from the Avonite pretty fast. Especially the lower grits numbers. I had a nice satin finish but it was duller than the original polish on that extra piece where I had not done any sanding. I then tried a 5” hook and loop orange foam polishing pad with Meguire’s 105 compound and a light spray of clean water. I only used four tiny drops of the Meguires. The final results are fantastic. Scratches completely gone and the half where I scratched the piece now has a polish that matches the original polish on the Avonite extra piece. I then did my countertop the same way and we love the way it looks. I almost spent 100s for a professional to come in and redo the countertop. I also almost spent 100s one a 7” polisher. ... show more
