  • Very powerful
The media could not be loaded. A lot smaller than I expected. Have wanted one of these for years. Saw this at $200 and couldn’t pass it up. I would rather have a battery powered one but didn’t want to spend the big bucks. Put the sandpaper on and turned it in. Very powerful and easy to use. I’m not a door installer and doubt I will use it for sanding a deadlock on a jamb. I’m a woodcarver/woodworker and knew that this would be useful. I love Makita products and own a few. This is really bare bones. The user manual is in Japanese and the tool is made in Japan. Many of theirs are made in China so I was thrill to see one actually made in Japan. Something I wouldn’t have said 50 years ago. The only complaint I have that the user manual isn’t in English. I printed out the user manual but would have rather had an English one delivered. I keep all my user manual’s in a filing cabinet. The tools is self explanatory and doesn’t require a user manual. If you are ordering this you probably already have experience with these type of tools but I still would have like an English translation. I will probably build a wooden case for this and paint it Makita Blue to match my other tools. It is a tool I wish I had a long time ago. At 71, though, I’m still happy to have bought it. I’m using it for everything I’m making, with wood. ... show more

  • The really right tool for some jobs
This thing is really solid and well built. A high-end commercial grade tool bordering on industrial grade. I was surprised at how powerful it is, yet easy to control precisely. Bought it for a specific task (custom bevels on plexiglas to match the openings on a sailboat), and it made the job of custom fitting the glazing a million times easier. Now I reach for it all the time when something needs a little tweak. Solid value for the money, useful more often than I thought it would be. This is a tool that you don't "need," in that, anything you can do with it you could do some other way, and it's not part of a "basic" kit; but it can save you a lot of time and effort sometimes. Makita, a handle that attaches near the forward roller would be helpful, as would an arm attachment for the 3/8 unit that would allow use of 1-1/8 belts. ... show more

  • Very Powerful Works in Hard to get to places
I bought this sander to get into the smaller areas that a regular sander won't fit. It is easy to use and more powerful than I though it would be. Sanding strips work great. I have been sanding old shutters that have 73 years of paint on them and it works like a dream. It can leave divots so I suggest testing it on something that you don't care about first to get used to the sander. ... show more

  • Japanese model with no US warranty
I bought this because the price had dropped, not knowing I would receive a Japanese model. It has the same model number, but the box and manual were only in Japanese. I contacted Makita USA and they replied "Unfortunately we are only able to support the warranty for Makita USA products. We do not support warranty for tools/products sold in Japan." If you care about possible warranty support, buyer beware. Luckily, a manual written in English can be found by searching online for "makita filing sander manual pdf". The Japanese version has a two-prong plug (not a double insulated polarized plug as described in the US manual). Since electrical outlets in the US and Japan are compatible for two-prong non-polarized plugs, it works fine when plugged into a standard US outlet. Since this appears to be a high-quality Makita tool, and the price was not overly high, I decided to keep it (in spite of the lack of warranty). Nice features: * Speed control (from "agonizingly slow" to "skin shearingly fast") * 90 degree adjustable (from "pointy stick" to "pew-pew pistol grip") * Dust port (requires a special adapter, but maybe can jury-rig something to make it work) * Long floppy power cord (some kind of shiny Japanese nylon, not sure how durable it will be) ... show more

  • A pretty specialized tool, but solidly built
Well, you either need it or you don't. It's useful mostly for *rapid* but selective material removal in hard-to-reach spots - filing off protruding screws, cleaning up welds, adjusting door strikes, etc. It's much faster than manual sanding or small rotary / oscillating tools, and much more precise than an angle grinder. It's too small for most larger projects, such as removing paint between balusters on staircases or decks - for that, you probably want Makita 9031 or equivalent. Adjustable speed is nice - on low settings, the tool is quiet and very easy to control, although it is relatively bulky and the handle is far from the tip of the belt - so it may be hard to maneuver it very precisely for touch-up work. ... show more
