  • A great alternative to comb binding, especially for smaller items
I frequently have .pdf documents that I need to read, and I simply won't read them on a computer, phone, or e-reader. I'm a paper kind of guy, but I also can't stand just having a bunch of loose sheets of paper stapled together. I purchased a comb binding machine and that's been a great solution for mid-size documents, especially ones that I need to have lay flat. That said, the combs are bulky for really short documents of 20 pages or less, and if the document is more than half an inch thick, it takes forever to punch the holes and put them on the comb. When I saw this little gem, I knew I had to give it a try. Ease of Assembly: Super-simple. I didn't even look at the instructions to assemble. Look at the photo of the assembled product and it's intuitive. Ease of Use: Bear in mind, I have only used this with the enclosed covers (3 mm, that can hold up to about 20 sheets of letter-sized paper). The covers themselves have a heat-set adhesive in them, so you just turn on the machine, drop the page in (lined up, of course), select the appropriate time for the thickness of cover you are using, open it up and drop it in so the adhesive binding in against the heater, and wait for it to be done. When the timer countdown is over, open it back up, and set it against the back support to let it cool. Super-simple! Quality of Binding: For a small document, these work great. The pages hold securely and the result looks great. Convenience: Oh my gosh, over comb binding, this is a huge improvement, at least for these shorter documents. I imagine it might be for bigger documents, too, but I do have some concern that the pages might not hold as securely with repeated use past a certain thickness, though I've nothing really to base that on. Comb binding is definitely better for a document you want to be able to lay out flat, but for things you just want to read, this is much more like a paperback book. In fact, it's exactly like that. Overall Assessment: While I originally thought this was going to be my backup to my comb binder for things that were really thin, or too thick to spend the time needed to comb bind, after using it I have turned that around. This is now my go-to binding solution, and I'm only comb binding in those cases where I need something to lay flat (which is fairly frequently, but not generally for documents I just need to read). The only disadvantage is that covers cost a bit more than combs and clear plastic covers, but it's totally worth it. My wife is an elementary school librarian, and she can't wait to have her kids make their own books and bind them for them with this. I'm super-pleased with this thermal binding machine. It isn't commercial-strength, but it seems plenty strong enough to hold up to regular use with basic care. I couldn't be happier, and wish I'd have seen these sooner! A great value, a great product, and a great solution to my binding needs! ... show more
