This stud finder works! I've had many over the years, some from big name brands, but I never had one that worked reliably every time. I would use the stud finder, mark a spot, and drill into the wall where there is no stud. Then I would drill left and right until I find it, sometimes far away. I've always been frustrated by stud finders. This inexpensive device changes that. I was surprised when I read there are no batteries. It uses powerful magnets that cause it to stick to the wall when a nail or screw is found (or presumably a steel stud). I gave it a try, first near a corner where I knew there was a stud. As I scanned downward, the stud finder stuck firm to a nail. I moved to an open wall and scanned using the recommended Z pattern. In short order the stud finder stuck to the wall. Photos of both finds are attached. The stud finder has notches around its perimeter and one dead center to make it easy to mark studs with a pencil when found. There are also two removable magnets that can be used to mark a stud while you move on to the next one - just stick a magnet to the nail. A built-in level helps in moving vertically and horizontally. This magnetic stud finder is one of those rare products I would buy even if it cost more. It has a permanent home in my toolbox. It's a keeper!

I decided to try this one out as an alternative to our battery-powered stud finder. This is small enough to easily fit into a pocket, which is a big plus for me (watch your keys, though). I'll admit that I was a bit skeptical, but it works! Now, I am not certain how well it would work with a house that has the older lath and plaster, but for drywall, it's effective. When it finds a nail or screw in the wall, it grabs it tight enough to remain on the wall without assistance, which is really nice for being able to mark the stud with a pencil (it has multiple slots and a hole on it that is made for that purpose). The miniature level in the center can be adjusted in 45 degree increments as well. You just turn the light green dial around it. This will get your location on a stud--but not necessarily on the center of the stud, as builders aren't always right on center when fastening. However, if you find a stud and mark a few locations along it, you can reasonably find center. As with any other stud finder, if you're close to anything electrical or plumbing-related, it can give a false reading. Be careful around those areas. This is well worth the money, and it'll have a permanent spot in my toolbox.

I've experimented with magnets to find my studs before, but this one is so much better because of its thoughtful design and handy built in features. I'm done with my frustrating electric stud finders that tend to break faster or need batteries which can be annoying. I was honestly a bit skeptical about how well this would work, but it totally exceeded my expectations. Its accurate and the built in level is a nice touch, especially since it rotates. I also really appreciate the detachable magnets for marking multiple stud. I used it to find all the studs along my wall, which made the project of mounting my tools so much easier. Considering the price, it's a total no brainer for me. I'm so glad I finally have a reliable way to find studs through my drywall. Using the included lanyard is nice, but I find that dragging it directly in my hand is enough to feel the magnetic forceI highly recommend this and wish I had this long ago.

This HIPDLUX stud finder is lightweight, accurate, and easy to use. The built-in level is a nice bonus, and the two green end caps are actually removable magnets — great for holding small hardware while you work. The only downside is the pencil marking hole. It’s too small for any standard pencil, so it ends up being more frustrating than helpful. If they fix that design, it’d be perfect. Still a solid little tool for quick home projects. Effective for finding nails in modern drywall construction. Definitely wouldn't use this as my sole stud finder as finding nails may not be in a convenient location. It is definitely useful for finding studs in general and then using something better in the targeted location. The little green detachable magnets are strong enough as "markers" to point out nails as you progress (if needed). They generally aren't strong enough to find the nails themselves unless you kind of lucky and pass exactly right over a nail. The spirit level worked "sometimes". I tried vertical and horizontal and they weren't consistent. I wouldn't dependent upon it unless you wanted quick eyeball accuracy. Still won't lose a star over this as no one should dependent on a tiny edge for level measurements. Difficult to read as it's stuck in a recess without back lighting. I'd ditch the strap, IMHO. 5 stars for being effective for finding nails in modern construction. A quick & dirty tool before switching to a finer resolution stud locator. Will be using prior to breaking out my M12 electronic stud finder that takes a longer.

Interesting little tool that could certainly come in handy. Unlike your typical stud finder, this one is magnetised, looking for metal to attach to. And the magnet is quite strong. May not be great for trying to hang things at a certain level, as studs won't have things like nails or screws to attach to everywhere, so options will be more limited. But works well and being magnetised, the level will hold itself to the wall, freeing up a hand, which makes things easier.

Tested this on our walls where there are clear screws holding the drywall (you can see the bump even through the paint) and it didn't pickup on a single one. Accordingly, this must require thin paint or no mudding over screws or something. Either way, it doesn't work.
