I'm a retired electronics technician. I've been using a small base with two small alligator clips to hold items to solder. After using this, it is like going from a bicycle to a Porsche sports car. The 4 arms with alligator clips are flexible but hold things steady and secure. The magnets that hold the various accessories to the relatively thick metal base are strong. I opted for the entire package with light, clamp for holding heat torch as well as the small vice. I love how everything is easily removed and oriented on the base exactly where I want for a particular job. For example, if I only need the light and two arms to hold something, I can clear everything off to have a less cluttered base. I with they had something like this 50 years ago in electronics school! This thing is a huge step up from the tiny little "helping hand" devices of the past. The magnifying ring light is big enough to actually see the work through. There are multiple ways to hold the work, either in a little vise or with clips on goosenecks. Everything is attached to the base magnetically so you can move it around and place it at will. The magnets are quite strong. I haven't used the heat gun holder. I wish the goosenecks stayed screwed into the magnetic bases tighter, but this hasn't been a huge problem. The bottom plate is much bigger on this unit than others but I still wish it was bigger. I wish there was a place to store the unused clips (I got six extra) on the base. But it's provided a dramatic improvement in how easy it is to solder and work with small parts. I now use it for close examination of all sorts of things; it's much easier than holding a magnifying glass or loupe plus you can see in three different kinds of light (very helpful if you're painting something). Overall, a winner. Get the big one though, it's so much easier to use than the smaller base even though it's more expensive. ... show more

    • Great baseplate and clips Gooseneck arms could be stronger
First, the baseplate is really heavy duty. The weight makes for a very stable platform. I've laced it on a number of different surfaces and have never had an issue with it moving. The soldering iron holder is conveniently placed whether you have it positioned on either side or on the back. With that said, the arms could be a little beefier. They're great for lighter projects but tend to flex when heavier items are being worked on. The clips do have a good bite and should be fine for all projects but are small and can be harder to manipulate if you have bigger hands. ... show more

All the accessories work well and are complementary, alligator clip hands, vice, pcb holder and grabber. It will greatly simplify working with circuits. The magnifying glass is a bit useless but I have a microscope. Only other thing would have completed this would have been a spring loaded pin to hold down SMT components. ... show more

A solid heavy base makes this a very stable tool. I added a drop of (blue) Loc-Tite to each of the screws on the rubber feet, and the iron holder to keep the moving parts securely attached. This addition to my workbench is strong and steady, and can easily support the fully assembled circuit boards I work on. This moves them up off the bench to a position that makes them much easier to assemble and test. ... show more
