Lotts and lots of NDS and TATE games

Awesome retro handheld it is devoted mainly to NDS games and TATE games which are vertical games. There is a fantastic amount of NDS games and a few hundred TATE games it's a very nice device and gives you hours of entertainment. Must have device and it very much worth the price.

very good product. I like it, Easy to setup, Long battery life, good screen size, and good for the value of money! You can play andriod games on it too. Only problem is the size of the screen is a bit too small, but its ok! i recoommend

I was so excited for a handheld to be able to play NDS games with a native aspect ratio! Until now, the best experience playing DS games has been.. to use a DS. While you can emulate on the PC, the lack of touchscreen is challenging. While you can emulate on a phone, the lack of external controllers intended for vertical use is challenging. What sucks about a DS is that I can’t sync the progress via Retroarch, so if I start a game, I am forced to play the entire game on that device. I was so so so excited for this console.. I set it up, and was disappointed immediately. Using retroarch, there are no cores able to run the my favorite game, Spirit Tracks at full speed. We’re talking 30% to 80% emulation speed, even while rendering in-game menus. I was also shocked that the game didn’t fill the entire screen….. why go through the effort to make a handheld console for the DS without the right aspect ratio? Also the screen is literally smaller than the DS I was able to use a native emulator that came with the device to achieve 100% emulation speed for DS games, but not with retroarch. Retroarch was the entire point of purchasing this device for me. I rarely leave bad reviews, but after several hours of gaming, I’m going to return this product. It: - Can’t play DS games on retroarch - Has a smaller screen than a DS - Has an aspect ratio mismatching the DS - Costs the same as a used DS My advice: hold out for someone to come along and make a proper DS handheld emulator, or just buy a DS.

A Brilliant Little Single Use Device

Nearly perfect

Would be 5 stars easily if it had a stylus or would let you use one. Some menus and keyboard are so small it is hard to be accurate with selections. Game selection and functionality are excellent, though.

Great for "vertical" arcade classics and NDS...but nothing else

I'm a big fan of 1980s arcade classics, so the layout of this device really spoke to me. Many of the retro icons from that era were in a higher vertical (a.k.a. portrait) aspect ratio. Any handheld that has a more horizontal aspect to its screen just ends up with a large portion of unusable real estate when emulating those types. The Zero 40 does great with any game that is vertically oriented. The only problem is that quite a few arcade games, and basically every home console game doesn't follow that formatting. You can play those on this machine, but a good 70% of the display goes dark as a result. The only other system that seems suited for this specific layout is Nintendo DS. This is very much a niche gaming device. Since I'm a collector, I can appreciate what the Zero 40 is trying to accomplish. The build quality is a bit on the cheap side, but it isn't the worst I've seen. I'm giving it four stars because it excels at rendering games in a vertically oriented format. However, if you're just looking for an all-around gaming device that does a wider array of classics, you might be disappointed.

Odd sized device with odd sized problems

Really 3.5 stars. I really wanted to love this. A little device made to emulate ds games, I've been looking for something like this forever. But its form factor makes it too bulky to fit in a pocket, and the screen is a bit tiny when emulating both screens for a DS. So for me, it's simultaneously too big and too small. But, that's just me. Emulation is pretty spot on, and I'm sure there's people who will love it.
