  • This is the programmable thermostat to get if you want adjustable swing, reliability, and a clean look.
Pros: Adjustable swing setting(one of the few on the market) Well built/reliable(unlike their "lux" consumer line) Easy to program and has a backlit display. Buttons are tactile micro-switches unlike other thermostats with cheaper conductive pad buttons that you have to mash. Relatively small size and the hinged door covering the programming buttons gives it a clean look. Cons: Goes through batteries a little faster than others but uses AAs so they last at least a year. The hinge door was more robust on the original psp511 but it should be fine. It would be nice if it showed both current temp and set temp at the same time instead of having to press one of the buttons first. Only goes down to 45 degrees for the heat setting. Compared to others: Honeywell - doesn't have adjustable swing. Emerson/WR - reliable but cheaper design and build quality. only 2 swing settings(.75 or 1.5) Pro1IAQ - the other thermostat with adjustable swing but apparently they're designed to fail after a few years to generate more service calls for contractors...if they change their policy to honor the warranty through the end user, then it would be a decent option. Nest(or any other "smart" thermostat) - overpriced and have minimal energy savings over a properly programmed thermostat. ... show more

  • Good unit, but the swing function is useless
Purchased this to replace an older, faulty thermostat of a differing brand. Installation and programming were very simple and straight forward. The directions in the packaging, regarding wiring and operation were very clear and easy to follow. I was up and running in less than 30 minutes. It's only been a few days, but the thermostat appears to be running flawlessly and, this could just be placebo effect, but my furnace appears to be functioning better as a result of this unit (more consistent, warmer air being produced) The Cons: The furnace filter feature is useless. Even if you change your filter regularly (which I always do!), but forget to change the settings in the thermostat to indicate you've changed it, the thermostat will stop working (to my understanding based on youtube reviews) until you reset the filter setting. What if you're away from home for a few days? Are your pipes going to freeze because you thermostat thinks your filter is dirty? How stupid! The swing setting is pointless. This is my fault for misunderstanding how it works, but I thought the swing setting just allowed the temp to dip a little lower in your home before telling the furnace to kick on, bringing the temp up to the desired programmed temperature. But it doesn't do that. Yes, it allows you to let the temp drop a little extra, BUT, when the furnace kicks on, it also raises the temperature an equal amount ABOVE the programmed temperature setting. For example. I have my thermostat programmed for heat at 63 degrees F. If I set the swing for 2 degrees, the thermostat kicks on at 61 degrees (as I want it to) but doesn't kick OFF until the home temperature reaches 65 degrees. Uhhhh, wut?????? No, bish, I want you to kick off at 63. THAT'S WHY I HAVE IT SET TO 63!!!!!!!!!! If I wanted you to kick off at 65, I would program the unit to kick off at 65. Thus, I find this feature pointless, as it just causes the furnace to run for a longer duration when it does kick on, negating any advantage of a wider temp drop. Finally, the face plate. An extra $10 for the cosmetic face plate? That's insulting. It's a little piece of plastic and you want $10 extra for that? It should be included. You can keep it! I deducted a star for this, the swing setting, and the furnace filter pointlessness. Other than these minor flaws, it's a nice, affordable programmable thermostat that is a little bit nicer than your bottom of the line Honeywell and other brands you would find at your local wally world. ... show more

  • Erratic Behavior, hoping the 3rd time will be the charm...
I bought this thermostat because I had the previous version that was branded under the PurePro name, and somewhere along the line PurePro was re-branded as LuxPro, but this thermostat is exactly the same (same model #, same functions, same programming, etc) so it was just a simple 10 sec swap, didn't even have to change the panel mounted on the was mounted on the wall. It is hooked up to my York high efficiency / forced hot air natural gas furnace that installed in 2010 when my house was built. The swing feature is exactly the same as my previous thermostat, working in .25 degree increments. On the old version i set the Swing = 2 (.25 x 2 = .5 degree swing). So if the thermostat is set to 68 degrees it should call for heat when the thermostat senses a temp of around 67.5 AND run the heat until it reaches 68.5 degrees (in other words a .5 degree swing in each direction). Using this setting on my old thermostat would result in the furnace running for about 15-18 min then it would switch off for 20-30 min before needing to come on again on nights when it was 20 degrees outside in NH. Unfortunately this thermostat seems plagued with problems. Using the exact same setting as above on the new thermostat, right away I noticed 75% of the time the thermostat stops calling for heat before it even reaches 68 degrees (display says 67 when it clicks off). This was resulting in my furnace running for about 5-10 min, then off for 10-12 min, then back on for 5-10min. Sometimes it does reach 68 and continue running for another 5-7 min after that as I would expect, but this is only 25% of the time. I contacted LuxPro support via email and received a very condescending response that if the heat is shutting off before the set temperature is reached it is a furnace issue. I explained to the gentleman multiple times and multiple different ways that it was the thermostat ending the call for heat, not the furnace switching off on his own (i.e the thermostat would click off and the fan icon would go away, if it was a furnace issue the thermostat would have still shown the fan icon indicating it was still calling for heat). He finally relented with “ok If it was NOT flashing than it results in being a bad thermostat”… no kidding. Ok, so no big deal, I requested a replacement from Amazon and had the replacement in a few days. Swapped them out again, well this time the swings were even more wild. I don’t know if it is a bad batch of thermostats or if the quality has just gone the way of the dodo, but as of now I have to recommend anyone thinking about getting this thermostat to stay away. I have requested another replacement. If it works as expected I will update this review. ... show more
