It's nice and solid quality, but I know there's nothing special going on with these when many other brands do the same. I'd say the positive is using their own frequency, long distance channels, keeps them off of your wi-fi so less devices taking up the precious signals. But, Lutron, come on, such a difficult closed system to work with the RA2 protocols. Need some API for integrators. ... show more

I used this outside in a cabana for string lights. It’s perfect - I added a pick remote to it so I have a “switch” for the lights, or I can use the phone app. Easy to setup, simple to use. Love it!

    • Very solid, but finicky
After having returned a couple of less robust outdoor wifi-enabled smart plugs that just didn't work, thought I'd give this very pricey option a try. Although it's a bit bulky, the unit feels very solid, should indeed survive Ohio winters. But as the product description more or less makes clear, there is no scheduling/ remote function built in to the unit, you must buy the Lutron Caseta Bridge to get that. So I did that, too, bringing the combo price to around $160. Better be built like a tank for that price! The Bridge installation was anything but easy, resulting in the one-star rating there. The Bridge saw my wifi but refused to accept the password to connect, and so could not load the software update that is required for operation. I got online with the Lutron chat rep, who very patiently went through a 45-minute process first to get the Bridge to connect to my network, then to be seen by the Lutron servers. Finally got it up and running after many steps. So five stars for Lutron service, but that kind of odyssey should never have been necessary to get the "smart" plug to do what it is supposed to do in the first place. Oh, and the schedule programming is a bit wonky - you have to create one entry to turn the device on, then another one with a different name to turn it off. Would never have understood this without the chat rep's help. So if you have the patience to endure what could be a prolonged setup process, this is a great unit. If you want ease of operation, maybe you'll be luckier than I was; maybe not. ... show more

    • Solid build quality - nicely water sealed.
Like most Caseta stuff, this is priced at the higher end of its market, but it is a nicely put together package, that seems like it'd take a decent soaking. The 'line lump' style is great since it separates the outlets from the device, offering more layout flexibility when attached to walls, and an option for water sealing the couplings, which is not the case with the standard sockets-at-the-bottom devices. I can't speak to its range, I happen to have a caseta lamp dimmer on the opposite side of the wall, so mine is only a few feet away from the mesh. ... show more

Lutron's stuff is expensive of that there is no doubt. However when you look at the construction and durability of a device that will be outside 24x7 it is second to none. Setup with the Lutron app was a breeze and even connected a pico remote to turn on/off the deck lights remotely.

    • Fantastic Range
I use this device to control my outdoor landscape lighting. I have a lot of Lutron Caseta in the house and this fit into my smart home system very nicely. It was added quickly to my Lutron app. I use the Lutron app to control all my outdoor lighting on a schedule related to sunrise and sunset. I don't integrate it to Alexa because there is no need to control the lights from the Alexa app, but it would be easy to add just like my other Caseta devices. There are two impressive things about this device. First it is well built and would seem to last a long time in an outdoor environment. Second is the range. It is not a WiFi device, it uses a 900Mhz frequency that has better penetration abilities than a 2.4Ghz signal. At first I thought I would have to install this device on the outside of the house between the outlet and the 12V transformer. But I realized that it would fit INSIDE the door on the transformer (I use a 150W transformer by Volt and it is 100% stainless steel enclosure). This made the installation much simpler and secured the device inside the transformer which you can lock. My Lutron hub is in a closet. There are 4 internal walls, a brick exterior wall and a full stainless enclosure around the switch and it works great. That is about 40 feet between the hub and the switch. I also tried it to an outlet in the backyard, even further from the hub and maybe one more wall and it still worked. Yes this switch is relatively expensive. But all the Lutron Caseta hardware I have bought is top quality. It is reliable, and I'm not sending a command through some server halfway around the world to turn my lights on/off. This syncs my landscape lighting with my porch light and garage sconces. They turn on and off at the same time and I didn't need to add another system into my smart house. Bought it to control a recirculating hot water pump. I wanted to be able to turn it on remotely in the morning to get the hot water to the rear of the home for shower. Now I just click the button an my app and 3 minutes later, instant how water. Works flawlessly with Lutron app.

    • Not cheap, but works
I use this on my garage door opener. It is on a schedule to shut down between 11 PM and 5 AM when the bad guys are out scanning garage door codes. Also allows me to shut it off completely when I travel. Kind of pricey, but not many other options.
