  • Self-cooling
Awesome little machine! This is my third ice cream maker. The cooling system works well and I enjoy the relative short waiting time (1hr) from beginning churn to finished ice cream. I like not having to use valuable freezer space to cool containers overnight. The capacity is about a half pint too small for batches of mixed fruit and nut ice cream, but big good for plain flavors, chocolate or vanilla. If you use the included recipe guide for measurements basis you can experiment with different ice cream based, ie soy or almond milk. Cleaning would be easier if the inner and outer container lids disassembled, but not horrible altogether if you have space to let parts air dry upside down. ... show more

  • Works great for small batches
Love this ice cream maker! Don’t need to freeze overnight or use ice. Plus it makes small batches. I use half cup heavy cream and half cup half and half for best texture. I learned to run the machine empty first for 15 mins to get it really cold then put in mix. that really helped firm up faster and minimize icy textures. I then would eat right away or do single scoops into 4oz plastic containers with lids to store in freezer. Storing different flavors of single scoops lets the family pick what they want without having to wait for the whole batch to soften before getting a scoops ... show more

  • Small capacity 8-11 oz; compressor type, does not require bowl to be pre-frozen; auto-stop
I've changed this to a 4 "*", because the motor, paddle and joint have held up to a good bit of ice cream making. If it broke today, I'd consider myself satisfied, given the price. However, the seller is dubious for hiding the capacity of the machine —only 8 to 11 oz— several other reviewers noted the same problem. This makes me believe that there will be no parts replacement or any other sort of help if there is a problem, perhaps even if the machine arrives defective. After more than 100 uses, there has been no problem, and I am satisfied in the general sense that I got my more than my money's worth. The motor is sounding a little different. If it fails soon, I will probably spend the extra 50 to 100 bucks on a more robust machine of the same process —compressor type cooling instead of freezing a bowl— for the larger capacity. Not being limited by pre-freezing a bowl is really helpful. My previous review: If the sale description had mentioned the actual capacity of the maker, and if the paddle were not so flimsy, I'd give this a 4 or 5. If it works for a few months, I'll raise the stars. It does have a huge selling point. It makes ice cream without a pre-frozen bowl, and that ice cream is ready to eat immediately. The lowered stars is really for not clearly labeling the capacity. Real advantages: 1) compressor type, no need to pre-freeze bowl. 2) auto shut off 3) You don't have to worry about mix temperature. If you make custard ice creams, this thing is great. You don't have to spend a ton of time cooling down the mix. I just let it get cool enough to avoid injuring the paddle, and pour it in. It takes longer for the ice cream to freeze, but overall time from heating custard to frozen ice cream is way lower. It freezes a pretty warm custard, say over 120°F in 2.5 hours. Cold mix in less than an hour. 4) It does make good ice cream that is completely frozen, though still not firm, despite the "hard" setting. It's firm enough to be good immediately though— not soupy, especially if you put it into a cold bowl. I would give this a 4 or 5 if the maker's capacity was clearly labeled when you ordered it. It will make a little over 10 oz of ice cream. This omission does seem to me to be intentional. Disadvantages: 1) small capacity, 8–11oz, seemingly intentionally vaguely described in the description. I was expecting this, because of a review that gave no exact number of oz, but said the capacity was really small. This continued vagueness does not reflect well on the seller and fuels my doubts about the motor and paddle below. 2) the paddle is worryingly light/flimsy, and the joint between paddle and motor looks like an intentional failure point, meaning to protect parts (see below). An intentional failure point like that makes sense if you can get the parts, or does not make sense if you can't get the parts. 3) you cannot remove the freezing bowl. I found that I can sop up what is left in the bowl with a complete microfiber towel, then use another slightly soaped microfiber towel to get the rest, then another just damp towels to remove any soap. It takes no time at all, the surface is reliably non-stick, but it does use up three towels. 4) I'm worried about the rebuilt motor— looking at how light the paddle is. However, it makes good ice cream without having to use a pre-frozen bowl. You just pour in the mix and let it go until it turns itself off which is a huge improvement over my last ice cream maker. I do see some possible future problems. The paddle is soft, flimsy, and the joint between the paddle and the motor looks intentionally weak, as if the manufacturer is expecting a problem of some sort there, and is afraid the self-shut off feature won't work, or that the rebuilt motor will deteriorate too fast if the ice cream gets a little too hard (the flimsy paddle stripping instead). If that is the case, it's a good idea, if you can get another paddle or another part of the joint between paddle and motor that hangs from the motor. The motor is a rebuilt motor. If it lasts a few months (I make a lot of ice cream) I will be happy and order a more robust unit of some other kind later. If it lasts longer than a few months, I will be ecstatic and raise the starts on this review. Pass a good time. ... show more

  • VERY LOW GRADE TOY QUALITY
I had such high hopes for this little guy. First, it arrived FAST and I was pleased to see it was a semi-recognized branding ("Cooks Essentials") but, like EVERYTHING today, these are all made in some factory in China and a million different names are silk screened on them. I suspect the seller got a batch of rejects or seconds since "Cooks Essentials" is a mainline brand, sold through major retailers (often white labeled or cross labeled (ie: Target, QVC, etc). Next, it's AMAZING TECHNOLOGY!! It uses (I think) an ACTUAL COMPRESSOR! (unreal for it's size, weight and scale), but somehow it REFRIGERATES the bowl, no pre-freezing etc! BUT, the quality of the build is sub-par. The motors which turns the paddle is a cheap, 15 v low grade motor, using a sealed/oiled gear that reduces the RPM to about 1/10th, so the motor and gear are working 10x harder to turn. The motor burned out on the 4th batch and nothing can repair it. Cute, interesting, impressive unit, LOW LOW grade, cheap plastics and cheap motor. ... show more

  • So Simple!
Easy to make perfect ice cream in an hour! I made both coconut milk ice cream and another recipe with whipping cream. Works well!

  • So easy even I can use it.
Best thing by far is no planning required. No bowl to be pre-frozen. I just throw the ingredients together when I feel like it and let it go. Favorite so far is peanut butter and jelly ice-cream. Doesn't make too much. Just churns away until it's done. Easy to clean - not a lot of disassembly etc.

  • It is a great idea, but needs work. I hope they figure it out
This is such a good idea. But there are kinks to work out. It is like this is a prototype and it is just not ready for prime time. It does make ice cream, about a pint. And you don't have to use ice and salt, nor freeze the bowl ahead of time. Just plug and go, and that's great. The biggest problem is how to get the ice cream out once it is made. The bowl does not come out so you have spoon it out, or you have to pick up the whole unit to dump it out, and then you still have to figure a way to clean it since you cannot immerse it. That part is so awkward it is a deal breaker. It is probably easier said than done to have a removable bowl, but somehow they have to figure that out for ti to be really useable. I still think its a great idea, and I hope they figure it out. ... show more
