  • Fantastic waterer. 5 years going strong.
Size: 10 Gallon
I thought I'd written a review for this back 5 years ago when I purchased it, but apparently I didn't. I probably don't need a waterer that's 10 gallons because even at the most chickens and ducks that we've had, we've never exceeded 14. This waterer is so much easier for me to manage than the variety that you have to twist the bottom on. I feel like I never get those on right. I actually broke my wrist a year and a half ago and I feel like I just don't have the strength either for the twisty ones. This waterer I know I'd seen reviews where people said they didn't like it because it was impossible to clean and also that it leaked. First, I use granulated pool chlorine to clean it. I remove it from the coop and I fill the tank and add some chlorine and let it sit a day or 2, rinse well and return it to the flock. I have also started using 30% vinegar for cleaning. I plan on trying that to clean it next time. As for leaking, I believe others were not closing the spout while refilling. To drain, unscrew the top lid. Tilt to let water drain out bottom spot at an angle. To refill you must make sure you adjust the stopper of the spout base that sits at the bowl. Find the hole with a finger and then slide the rubber disk stopper to cover the hole. Fill tank and then replace top and tighten down before moving the stopper from the spout hole. Viola! Now mine is 5 years old now and the rubber disk isn't as snug as it once was. As not to have it close, I will be using ouchless small hair ties as a washer to keep it from sliding on its own. I think it will give it the friction it needs so I can still close it, but when open,it should stay put. Another negative comment was about the legs coming off. These legs require some good pressure to push in to place, but when in firmly. they are solid. I know, because I struggled with this at first. I have 2 feed hoppers as well and I had them full when I realized I hadn't snapped all legs in well enough. I tilted the full tank to get the leg far enough in the slot at the right angle and put my foot in front of it so it didn't slide. I then put some weight down on the top, enough to get the leg to slide all the way into place. But, I suggest before you fill it, try and lightly wiggle those legs in 4 directions and if any are wobbly, press down and wiggle them all the way into place. You'll need to put that pressure on them so you feel it set in. Wiggle lightly to make sure there is no play. If you must use something to 'tap it in' use only a rubber hammer and BE gentle. I will be buying a second waterer to put in another area. This is the best waterer for the job! 5 years and going strong in a shaded coop. Same with the feed hoppers. The build quality is excellent. We don't get snow and freezing weather, so I haven't experienced plastic shattering like one review mentioned. The plastic has been sturdy for me. And, it doesn't leak! It has great storage capacity, more than I actually require, but our summers in Southern Nevada hit a consistent 100 to 112 or more in Summer. We need to make sure they never run out of water. The size fits well in the areas I use it. They are large waterers. Make sure water doesn't go stagnant, adding apple cider vinegar will help. We add apple cider vinegar to the water for health benefits to the flock but ACV can also help to reduce the growth of algae in the waterer, keeping the water fresher. I suggest adding it to the waterer for both reasons. ... show more

  • Gets the job done
Size: 10 Gallon
I bought this for my chickens but my ducks love it too. There are a couple of grips I have about it though. One, the rubber stopper to stop the water flow on the down spout doesn't hold the water good enough while filling up the tank. It leaks quite a bit, even when moved to fully cover the hole. The legs fall off really easily when moving the tank....and when its full....its heavy! So you have to lay it down on its side to retrieve the leg (or legs when multiple fall off at once) and put them back on. Other than that, its great and holds enough water for a good long while. Gets the job done. ... show more

  • Great concept faulty design
Size: 8 Gallon
Great product idea. I have a ducks and chickens and this is a great product. I am giving a 1 stars because the legs are faulty. It does not support the weight of the tank. Less than 2 winks and the legs broke off. I like the fact that my chicken and ducks get water from the same place. However they need a better more durable leg design. I would love to return it and get a new one to see if this was a one product problem. ... show more

  • Decent, but needs a lot of improvement
Size: 10 Gallon
I had noticed issues with sturdiness in other reviews when I was looking to purchase this product, but I haven’t had any issues [so far] with that. My biggest issue has been the red plastic piece that is used to cover the hole in the water spigot. It’s constantly falling down and blocking the water hole so no water can come out. The reserve tank is always full and the bowl will be dry. Once I raise the red plastic piece, the water will then come out. As soon as I release the red plastic piece, it slides back down and blocks the water again. It’s kind of annoying to have to keep checking whether that piece is up correctly or if it slid down, blocking the water hole. I will be figuring out something to hold it up, but for now that’s my biggest gripe with this product [and I purchased two]. Edited in 2024: These were a waste of money. The legs are flimsy and crack very easily. We purchased two of these and one had a leg snap off within a few months after purchase. The second one ended up getting a huge crack in the bowl and will not hold water. They are not farm grade sturdy. Maybe a small-time fowl owner with a little coop and only a few birds could make this work for a long time, but it was not durable enough for our birds. The geese pretty much knocked it over. ... show more

  • Great Duck Waterer
Size: 8 Gallon
This has been the best waterer out of various ones I've tried. The 'basin' where the water sits keeps the water well below the spill line, but still has it deep enough for the ducks to take good gulps. This helps prevent a lot of spilled water especially if you are not on level ground as compared to many other waterers I've used. The bottom valve works really well as well compared to others as my geese would destroy the valve on other ones, and this one takes the abuse quite well. The other advantage to the water basin, is that it is more of a pool of water, which works better for the ducks and geese, rather than a small ring of water around the waterer. It has legs that keep it off the ground, which is also nice to help keep the water cleaner. Ducks and geese make a mess of their water, and keeping it above the ground helps the water stay cleaner for a bit longer. The only downside is that I wish the top opening for re-filling was wider so that I could get inside of the unit to wash it out, but the overall product is far better than any other waterer I've used. To be clear, I've got ducks and geese using it. ... show more

  • Don’t love it
Size: 10 Gallon
The pros: this holds a lot of water and is easy to fill with a hose from the top. Ok for the summer. The cons: I’ve had a leg or 2 come off and have to be put back on. Not good in the winter at all. Then there’s the little water gasket thing that controls how much water comes out. It is impossible to get this perfect, it takes may tries to get it in the right position, meanwhile there’s water shooting out until you get it just right. If any bit of water freezes in or around that gasket, welp, no more water can come out. ... show more
