  • The Ladder You Will Never Regret Buying
Size: 2 Step Style: Ladders
I bought this Little Giant Safety Step for my wife who seems to be unduly occupied with whatever stuff she has stored on the upper shelves of her high closet. Watching her standing on a tall wood box gave me reason to worry for her safety. Even so, she gave me one of "those looks" when I said that I was bringing home a Little Giant for her. Some precise measurements: Floor to 1st step 8-3/4" Floor to 2nd step 17-3/4" Both steps measure 14-3/16" wide and 9-1/8" front-to-back... with a 1" high nose Floor to top of extended handle 33-3/4" The handle width is 18-1/4" side to side, but the grab width at the top is effectively 13" before curving downward. Made of steel: handle hinges, brackets, all rivets, and bearings. Made of aluminum: the basic A frame structure, handle, under-stair tubes, and rear brace. The steps appear to be heavy castings. Without divulging specifics, I just happen to be the *perfect test* for the stated weight capacity of this stepladder. ;) It feels rock steady to me... and it will certainly feel that way to anyone carrying fewer pounds. The most important point I want to make about this Little Giant Safety Step is that you feel much more like you are standing on normal stair steps than on a ladder. Stair steps feel comfortable, secure and safe; ladder rungs do not! You can stand on this for hours without fatigue. The engineering put into this Little Giant Safety Step is apparent. Each part appears more than strong enough to accomplish its task. The parts work in concert; the stepladder opens and closes smoothly and with ease. If you're tired of risking your life standing on the sorts of bargain-priced stepladders that are usually employed by homeowners, *this* is just the ladder for you. While no stepladder can guarantee you won't break bones if you ignore basic safety rules, this Little Giant is not likely to be the reason for any mishap. I supervised construction and would never buy or use a cheap ladder of any kind ---- your safety is well worth the extra money. ... show more

  • Sturdy ... but Industrial
Size: 4 Step Style: Ladders
Great purchase. I may even purchase a 3-step. The Safety Step isn't without its issues in a home environment, however. The good: It's sturdy. Very sturdy. Wide, comfortable steps that are even fine barefoot. The tray at the top of the handle is handy to hold tools and bulbs or parts (or whatever). Less than optimal: This is really more of an industrial design, in my opinion. It's very heavy compared to either a typical home step stool or even a step ladder. It's wide, so if you need to use it cramped spaces like closets or perhaps narrower hallways you may find yourself struggling to work around it when set up. Consider, for example, that the extension handle must be raised after the Safety Step is opened - and that it is raised from the back. I can do so without any particular problem, but some may not have the reach or extension. The handle's locks are pretty stiff. Great lockup, but hard to release for some older people. Folded, it won't fit in our pantry between the shelves and the door, as does a regular kitchen step stool. There are wheels for mobility, but you can only use them when the Safety Step is OPEN and the handle extended. Great in a warehouse environment, not so great maneuvering around a house. The wheels are plastic and small, which works well on hard surfaces, but aren't great on carpet. Or pavers. Or stone. Or ... The bad: "Little Giant" in, well, giant orange letters molded into every step! Subtle it's not. The finish is bare aluminum and galvanized steel (I believe the steps are steel, though I'm not completely sure of that. One tip: The easiest way to open it is to stand at the side, one hand on the top step, the other on the aluminum bar in the back. A simple push with a rocking motion opens or closes the Safety Step with ease. Of course, you need the space to do it that way. The Safety Step is a great solution if the weight and space requirements aren't issues for you. Keep in mind that this review is for the 4-step model. The 2 and 3-step models are correspondingly smaller and lighter. ... show more

  • Expensive but well worth the price
Size: 2 Step Style: Ladders
I am an electrical contractor who does all sorts of wiring and repair jobs. Often times there's a need for a short ladder but even a 4 foot ladder is heavy and takes up a lot of room inside a home. The Little Giant 2-step works perfectly well we need just a little bit of reach but don't need our shortest step ladder. Both treads are large enough to fully support even my size 13 shoes and I feel very secure on either step. Construction detail is spectacular and it is made more like a fine piece of machinery than a ladder. Some of my employees are pretty large and the 300 pound weight rating is a real benefit. Plus it's small and light and easy to pack both into a home and up or down stairways. If you need a short ladder this one will not disappoint. Highly recommend. ... show more

  • The handle latches are way too difficult for my wife to release - much too ridgid
Size: 2 Step Style: Ladders
An adult male will have to exert significant hand pressure to release the handle latches. My wife could not even get the handle latches even half-compressed to fold the handle back down.
