This step stool exceeded expectations. It is so compact and thin when folded, able to be stored in small spaces. Our home lacks storage, but this step ladder slid right into a small crack between our refrigerator and wall. A perfect location for reaching into high cabinets! It is very sturdy and feels safe to stand on, even while shifting your weight. A lever must be pulled to close the step stool once it is opened, adding another layer of security when in use. The material is a heavy metal, which contributes to the sturdiness. That being said, it is heavier than expected, making it a little more difficult than anticipated to move around the house quickly and easily. I expect that this product will last a long time. I finally got to try this out in person! I ordered it for my daughter's NYC apartment - she's in a tiny pre-war apartment in Harlem and the kitchen cabinets go up to the ceiling for lack of any other storage space. When she moved in - her roommates were getting by with a 2-step step stool that was inadequate. My daughter, being shorter than her roomies, needed a better option. This is compact - easily folds and unfolds (which is constantly the case in this kitchen) and takes up little room when folded. It's very sturdy and sound. Highly recommend. I researched this for days so you don't have to....this is the step stool you're looking for. I tried it out myself when I visited her in NYC this past week. I used several times a day. Used this at a friend's house and felt very secure as I helped her with her curtains...much more than what I was using at my home. I have now used it at home and it's a secure feeling to be able to get up high and not feel endangered. The little shelf is wonderful...you can put the light bulb or screws or tools on it and it's right there, handy, don't have to go up and down for your stuff! Very sturdy. Folds up very flat. A bit heavy, because it's made of steel, but when it's flat, I just put my arm through and off we go. It even has a tiny, little lock to keep it locked when you step on it. Push it and you fold it easily. I am keeping it in a little corner inside the house so it's always handy. It's only 2" across when folded!!! Pretty good! ... show more

This feels very sturdy and folds nicely. The colors are clean. My only complaint is that the glue dots put on the top under the Rubbermaid paper label are so tenacious that some remains stuck to the step and immediately made the item look dirty and caused a stickiness under my shoes. It is so frustrating for a brand new item to be marred like this for no reason. So it loses a star for this. ... show more

Had been using a fold-up plastic 1-step stool to reach the taller shelves in the kitchen, but unfortunately it disintegrated while in use - scary! This Rubbermaid 1-Step Stool is so much safer being made of Steel. a much better material. It's not that heavy and it folds up, so it can be stored in my pantry taking up a bit more room than the smaller plastic stool - but worth it for safety and peace of mind, plus this model also has a sturdy crossbar handle for balance when ascending or descending the stool/ladder. ... show more

I suggest this step stool for everyone, especially older folks. I know we are discouraged from climbing (I'm 83) but for things just out of reach, this 2 step stool is safe and comforting.
