  • Lexivon- Competitive and affordable!
Style: Chopping Axe
First I’d like to mention that this is the first axe I’ve ever purchased. I’ve usually used my dads in the past but it was time to get my own. I purchased the 28-inch chopping axe. My main use for this has been splitting logs in my backyard so I can have fires in my fire pit over the summer. I will say that this axe has exceeded my expectations. It slices through and split seasoned/dry wood beautifully. If the wood isn’t fully seasoned/dry you might have to give it a few good hacks but it will eventually go. I’ve even hit the handle on accident a few times right below the axe head and I haven’t noticed any cracks or damage because of it. The feel of this axe is great in the hands and the rubber grip is comfortable. I really like the fiberglass composite handle it seems very sturdy and has taken a few accidental blows. The weight feels perfect, not too heavy and not too light. After you give the head a nice little sharpen it just eats through wood with a powerful swing. I’d definitely recommend sharpening it before using it the first time, it doesn’t come very sharp from the factory. It even comes with a handy head safety protector that has a handle on it. I paid around 31 dollars for this axe with a discount on Amazon and I will say this is a solid and affordable piece that is competitive with a Fiskars axe that costs 15-20 dollars more. Great value for money so far! I expect this to last many more summers. An avid and extremely experienced wood chopper/splitter may notice some differences/ have some gripes but I’d assume this will work and perform perfectly fine for most people. ... show more

  • The Perfect Splitting Axe
Style: Splitting Axe
In the past, I have always used a traditional maul and wedge type of method to split logs into firewood. The labor was satisfying ...but it was backbreaking enough to make you want to do it in small batches. I took down a couple of large oaks several months ago and was considering getting a pneumatic splitter, but was not certain whether it could handle odd length logs or the 12-to-18 inch widths. I found the Lexivon and decided to try out the 28 inch model. What a difference it was with the new axe -- I honestly never realized there was such a specific splitting axe at such a reasonable price. The axe is very lightweight and the most perfectly balanced tool in the shed. It is sufficiently sharp for the job and appears as stout at the end of the job as it was when new. My son (adult) and I split and stacked a little more than a half cord of logs into firewood in an afternoon using the new axe and a sledge hammer. The axe split through the wood almost effortlessly (compared to using the maul and wedges). When we came upon a tough spot or a knot in the wood, the axe became a wedge and our sledge knocked it through with a few whacks. All in all, this is one of the best investments of the year for me. ... show more

  • A Great Axe, With a Great Price
Style: Chopping Axe
I have been doing a lot of cleaning up around the house, and one of the tasks that I have been doing is removing old grape vines and some smaller stumps that I have been mowing around. I had an old axe that I sharpened up and took care of a few of the pesky vines and young tree starters. Well, great until the wooden handle snapped on it after a few good swings, granted the axe was never designed for rotted stump removal. Was shopping around for a new handle, figured I would want to go with a fiberglass one, but the cost of some of them were more then this whole axe! So I went ahead and ordered this guy, and oh boy is it a great axe. It's got the right amount of weight to it to chop a lot. Granted, I am probably not using it as intended with chopping grapevines in the dirt along with some older stumps and newer tree growths. Still though, chops great, holds its edge great even with the abuse I've been putting it though. After a good 3 hours of chopping vines, stumps, and other brush it still has the ability to chop chunks out of tree branches. ... show more

  • Solid tool within a range of recommendations
Style: Splitting Axe
This is a pretty solid tool. The head has just enough mass/weight to make splitting through smaller (think under 15inches in diameter) blocks/sections of wood fairly easy. I used it about an hour or two after I got it. My recommendation if you buy this (coming from nearly two decades of doing on and off tree work) is that you use it on softer/less dense woods like poplar, ash, maple, pecan, etc. Heavier/more dense woods like oaks (red, willow, post, water, white, etc) and hickories might need a heavier tool, like a 6lb+ maul. I also recommend you don't try to split blocks longer/taller than about 18inches. Do that and you'll find this tool works well. All in all solid tool for the few weeks a year I'll be primarily using it. Worth the money. The 'sheath' or protective covering isn't really all that much. I suggest you clean the axe head after every use with warm soap and water and a moderately stiff brush and after drying it just wrap it in some dry newspaper/washcloth. Or just make your own covering. Other than that: Totally recommend this if you're a casual wood splitter from time to time (like splitting enough wood for a week of snow and rain, or a backyard get together every few weeks). ... show more

  • Great seller! Fabulous customer service.
Style: Chopping Axe
Update: After the return of the axe (full refund), the seller contacted me to learn more about how the axe failed. They take their products very seriously and gifted me a replacement axe free of charge. The axe arrived just two days after the call. The new axe works wonderfully. I’d give it 4 stars, but with customer service like that anything short of 5 would be petty! Thank you Lexivon. You're awesome and the axe is great. (Note: I was not asked or encouraged in any way by the seller to change my review.) Original review: Loved the weight, size, and cleaving. Felt great, for five minutes until the head assembly snapped right off. :( Before you ask, I’m very experienced and did not hit the handle on the wood. Just a hard clean strike and pop, snapped! Right through the meat of the handle below the head. ... show more
