i have a $180 roller sharpener, but its hard to sharpen my super little knives with it, so i bought this to try out, my 2 year old knife that couldnt cut u if u tired becuase it was so dull will now shave my hair after about 10 passt throughs. ill never use the other features but i obviously tried them, the whistle is super loud and the fire starter 100% works. huge sparks ... show more

I was very surprised with the performance. It puts a decent edge on, has a few useful features, and was dirt cheap. I wouldn’t recommend for higher end knives or a type of knife that isn’t sharpened at a 20 degree angle, but for a pocket knife it sharpens very quickly with a solid edge.

We purchased a couple of these, sharing them with a few relatives who are intense hikers. We also purchased for ourselves and our survival kit. We live on the oceanfront and put in our Tsunami bug out kit. It has the all important sharpener aspect, but also a fire starter. A whistle, etc. Husband reports that the sharpener works very well on his pocket knife collection. Win/win. We probably all need one of these! Small, compact and easy to carry or put into a kit. Knife sharpener worked well which is why I ordered the tool. However, the fire starter is worthless. It says to wear through the black covering from the fire stick which I did - but no improvement.

    • Good sharpener, but fero rod is unintuitive

It works well for what it is. Also, for those having problems with the fero rod, here's how you use it. You pull it out and run it through the metal sharpener. You have to keep pretty hard pressure to make it spark, but a hard and fast pull will generate a strong and very bright spark. It does seem to have a coating that needs to be worn through, so it may take a few attempts. Most people are going to want to strike it with a knife, but I only think this will dull the knife. ... show more
