Description

Big line, big fish and big strength are what come to mind when looking at Lew’s new Speed Cast round baitcasting reel with audible bait clicker. The Speed Cast features a 5-bearing system with stainless steel ball bearings and a Zero Reverse one-way clutch bearing. The reel’s brass main gear and crankshaft ensure that strength is a top priority, while its anodized aluminum frame and sideplates provide a no-flex housing. Drag is a carbon fiber system easily controlled by its aluminum star, leaving no doubt that this reel can be tough and smooth at the same time.

  • This reel is great
Size: 600
I received this as a birthday gift and I got to use it a couple of days ago to do some night time catfishing. This reel will cast a long ways even with 1 oz weight. The bait clicker is pretty quiet, but not sure if there's something going on with the reel or if that's just the way it is. Other than that, the reel is great. The cast and the retrieve is very smooth and I would recommend this product and I would buy again. ... show more

  • Look at the schematics closely
Size: 600
I am not a reel mechanic...hell I can't put one back together most of the time...but I do have eyes and I can look at schematics. So...I purchased two Lew's Speed Cast reels back the first week of December. Matching reels...for me and my wife. They are good looking reels. Out of the box they are butter smooth. Drag is smooth and seems consistent. We've only caught a few cats on them...and a bowfin and nothing over 10 lbs so we haven't taxed them at all, but we fish every weekend...both days most of the time...and during the week as often as we can. We boat fish primarily, and fish from the bank pretty often too, so there is dragging, casting and suspending type fishing for catfish. Blues most of the time. I say this to preface this review so that y'all will know that we fish a lot. I wish that we had Garcia C3's, but just not in the cards right now. Earlier this year I bought two matching Piscifun Chaos XS 50's for around $100 for both. Caught some nice fish on them...up to #45 and a BUNCH in that 18 to 30lb range plus some 10 and 12 lb hybrids...so not monsters but tough fish. They just weren't bearing up like I'd hoped. No failures...they have gotten the job done, but you can tell. Clickers are getting quieter and quieter...they engage sometimes on casting and retrieving etc. Some clicking and ticking and some looseness here and there. Don't get me wrong. For around $50 they are a good reel...you can just tell...those of you reading this that have used round baitcasters for a long time will know what I am talking about. I decided to go ahead and get us a couple more reels, and I was intrigued by the Lews Speedcast SC 600 reels. Got good reviews...they looked sharp and they are Lews. So I bought a couple for about $110 for both on a black Friday deal coupled with some credit card points. I've strung them up and they have been used a dozen times or so and while they are slick, they are just not a big step up from the Chaos reels...even though the are more than twice the price regularly. So I started really looking at them...which, yes I should have already done...and they look identical to the Chaos reels in every way except paint. I went home and pulled the schematics and guess what...they are the same right down to the numbers on the schematics. One has a power handle and one a dual paddle set up, but other there than that...they are the same reel. I'm confident that the parts are interchangeable. Upon inquiry, I was told that the Lews reels are held to tighter quality control tolerances and some parts are made from better quality materials...but...c'mon guys...really? I was born at night, but not last night. Now I know that this is my bad and that I should have seen this much earlier and I haven't used either reel long enough to come to a solid conclusion. The Lews reels might outlast the Piscifun reels or vice versa. Both are performing pretty well for the type of fishing that we do...I'm just saying...they look like the same reel with different paint. I know, I know...there have been the same things said about various branded "catfish" reels concerning the Kastking brand...I was just a little surprised. Lews use to be the cat's meow back in the day...and yes I am old enough to use that term. I owned an original Speed Spool. I'm not damning either reel. The Piscifuns have done some dirt over the course of a year. My wife's PB...#45...was caught on one of the Chaos reels and many other "good ones" as well and the Lews are doing well too...so far, and I will update this review later. I just want y'all to be aware...it appears that they are the same reels with different paint and the Lews are twice the price. That is a solid fact. I am not posting pics...just look for yourself. Not hating on either of them...they seem to be pretty good for the money. Myself? I will be purchasing Abu Garcia 6500 C3s and 7000 C3s going forward. Used if I have to. I have a 4600 C3 that is well over 20 years old going strong today. So there you go. If you have any info please share it. If the Lews are indeed being held to tighter tolerances I'd like to hear about it and the Chaos reels seem to be pretty good....damn good for the price. In conclusion; if I could go back in time I believe I would by a couple used 6500's (I know they are still $100 or more for something usable) and I would have bought a couple used 7000's back in December (ditto on them). I would have been out a little more, no doubt...but.... ... show more

  • Lew's = Can't Go Wrong
Size: 600
As with every Lew's reel I own (26...replaced 14 older Lew's bait casters since Jan 2018) the SC600 is excellent in every aspect.... I use this model for live bait fishing for Strippers here in Tennessee and in Alabama, and Snook & Redfish in Florida. It handles larger strippers with ease spooled with 25 - 40 lb. test line. The SC600 @ under $100. is superior to anything I've tried @ twice the price by Abu Garcia, Shimano... The reel works well mounted on a Lew's David Fritts 7 6" Heavy or 7' 11" MedHvy rod. Can't go wrong with this reel no matter what you target species is! Good Fishing All! ... show more

  • Excellence reel for the value
Size: 600
I have several Lews so my expectation was high for this round reel. I was immediately impressed with how smooth it is the easy spool release and instant pickup. I loaded it with 80 lb super braid and set it up on my favorite 7 ft med-heavy saltwater casting rod. I tied on a 1/4 oz soft bait just to see if it could handle a light lure. I casted down wind and up wind and with minor spool adjustments it was able to outcast my older round reel. I bought it for bait fishing, really like the easy clicker, and have no doubt it will handle anything I catch. I'm happy with it and especially at the price, will be getting another one. ... show more

  • This is my second purchase of this reel. Great reel for Striper fishing.
Size: 600
This reel is light weight but tough. Easy to cast and is as smooth as silk. Nice drag and I like the thumb placement bar on top of the reel. Very good quality for the price.

  • Excellent
Size: 600
I bought two of these and tried them out right away fishing for catfish. Both worked great using 25lb line and 3 oz weights. Casts great and handled 5lb fish well. I am anxious to see how they do with much bigger cats. I wanted an alternative to the $200 Abu Garcia reels. I am not a pro but this reel seems like it will do well for my recreational use. Also Lews stands behind their product. I recently had a new crappie rod tip break on the first use. They sent me a new one within a couple of days with no hassle. I will be buying a couple more of these reels. ... show more
